Have you tried hitting the opposite way?

I’ve been righty golfer my whole life and always been in the 2-7 cap range. Some great, some awful and developed some pretty bad swing habits right handed.

 

Always been ambidextrous and never really thought about turning around and screwing with a lefty set until recent. Wednesday had a couple balls end up in bad spots in trees and flipped a wedge over which is my usually move to advance a ball left handed. Except for I gave this a little more attention and got the ball advanced 50-70 yards both times in a relative area that I was aiming.

 

Clearly this is a crazy ? And a long process, but wonder if anyone has pulled it off?

When I started playing my father brought me home righty clubs. I play baseball and hockey lefty and was starting to hit balls with his clubs ( he was a lefty ) . He said no no too expensive and to hard to find good lefty clubs, learn righty. So I did but every now and then I’d bring a club or two from his bag to the range. I was always way longer lefty but really wild. Haven’t done that in 30+ years but I do wonder about how I would have been as a lefty.

So many golfers make unathletic, controlled lunges at the ball, compounded by all the swing thoughts and external shoulder rotations, etc.

Why make things 10x harder by switching sides? A gifted athlete could do it but then those people are probably already scratch with whichever side they chose at the start.

Physically it’s actually good for your body to swing in both directions for balanced muscle use.

I make practice swings left handed when hitting balls to do it on a small scale.

I'm a lefty who plays golf right-handed. Some interesting threads here regarding people who are cross-dominant. Fully agree with Monte above. Part of my warm-up before hitting balls is to take 2 clubs, place them together and swing them as one, slowly, to stretch out those muscles. I do this from both sides to keep the body balanced. 25+ years of yoga reinforced this theory: what we do on the left side, we need to on the right. And what we do on the front of the body, we need to balance by doing on the back. (i.e. stretch both quads and hamstrings).

I have a old TM Rescue hybrid that I put in the bag on occasion, to get me out of a bad spot when I'm on the "wrong" side of a tree etc. Haven't taken it farther than that - the feel of a release from that side seems so foreign, but I suppose with enough time and swings it could be done.

I played with a lefty for years. I fell down when I tried to make a left-handed swing. I am extremely righty, but I can start a nut better with my left hand.

Yeah. On video my left swing looks decent especially at the top, but I can’t hit it for crap. I have a student who can shoot in the 70s on either side.

I'm a lefty that plays righty. I think about it all the time and have a set of left handed irons

Im semi-ambidextrous and play(ed) hockey left handed, but baseball and golf right handed. Never thought to try lefty, but just did it in the living room and can't turn as much due to limited left hip mobility (right hip has been surgically fixed)

I have a buddy that plays off 3 and got down to a 6 as a lefty .. he has 5 or 6 aces and I think 2 are left handed

Along the lines of what Monte said:

 

I play right handed but I keep a left handed 7 iron in my practice bag. I picked it up from the used bin for $5 at a golf store. When I go the range, I do a series of warm up drills alternating between right handed and left handed. It definitely helps to balance out the body, as well as improving balance in the swing. I end the warm up by hitting balls with 3/4 shots both right and left handed.

 

I've hit some full shots left handed. I could get around a course, but I'm not about to switch over now.

 

The super speed system uses this as well. In integral part of the program includes swinging the opposite way from dominant.

No way could I play lefty. I can putt lefty well from five foot in but lose distance control quickly outside that.
