Wedges question and opinions

Looking at new and 100 and under. Mizuno mc18, wilson pmp, clev rtx 3. Wilson pmp intrigues me as vjay has it in his back. Needing gap and sw or lob. Might go 52 and 60.

You can get RTX 4s under $100 new pretty easily, that'd be my choice.

I love my raw RTX 4’s. They feel great and they have started to patina nicely as well. I have 50, 54, and 58, but I wouldn’t hesitate to get a 52 or 60 if I changed my setup.

I play S18, great feeling, workable forged wedge. Not as soft as the older S5, but more or less the same grinds, shape, & performance. Not knowing anything about your game, or current set makeup, I’d recommend looking at the 52 and 58. It’s most common to have 4 or 6 degree gaps between specialty wedges. If your PW is 45° or stronger; consider going 50 & 56

Then there’s bounce & grind. The 12 degree bounce on the 58 is best suited for a steeper swing and/or soft conditions. If you sweep, pick, or play firm sand & tight lies, the lower bounce 58.08 would be a better option. The low bounce grind gives more relief for laying the club flat, higher bounce if you setup more square.

Playing the S18 as well. 50* (7* bounce) in blue ion, 54* (12* bounce) and 58* (8* bounce) in gun metal. Read somewhere that the satin finish can reflect the sun a lot, and I live in FL.

Very happy with these. Soft yet dense feel off the face, and plenty of spin around the greens.

Added them all to the bag in the last year. Good deals to be had if you take your time when searching...

I have PmP Raw gap wedge from Wilson, Cobra offers some nice options both decent enough. However, my Eidolons are going nowhere !

I don't play Vokey wedges, but I respect greatly the line's engineering.

Before the CV lockdown, Vokey wedges were on clearance at a couple of event. Depending on where you live, you might be able to find SM7 wedges at around $100. Some SM6 blocs were also available, although not much variety in lofts. In both cases, most were demo wedges or wedges with cellophane still on head.

Also, take a look at the Tommy Armour GXT offerings. You can get new PW, GW, SW and LW for about $70 each. Medium-bounce heads with moderate heel-toe and trailing edge relief. Line includes classic blade-like GXT or the GXT CB (cavity). Dick's has resurrected the famous TA brand, and is putting original engineering behind the various models.

How does the blue ion wear? I'm familiar with oil can and gunmetal finishes, but I'm curious how this finish holds up compared to them.

My S18s are satin and gunmetal, played S5 in blue, it is pretty sharp. The blue wears down to silver a little faster than the gunmetal...I think, haven’t had these as long.

SM7 demos are going for under $100. My favorite finish out there is the slate blue, looks like they wear in a lot like the brushed steel. The best anti-glare finish is Ping stealth.

The blue finish wears off over time, especially on the sole. My sole is mostly satin in the middle, blending to the original blue at the edges. The face doesnt wear out as much b/c the middle (groove) section doesnt have the finish. And the back of the club still looks pristine.

To be honest, I only bought the blue ion b/c it was a steal with the shaft (DG Tour S400) I was looking for. But I am glad I got this model.

Another vote for PMPs here...spinniest wedge with non-conforming grooves I’ve played. Almost as spinny as the Nike VR Forged wedges but not quite the same feel.

Ah i thought that was it. I know the old taylor made y cutters and spin milled vokey were spin monsters.

sub70 wedges look awesome... tend to get praised by those who play them. I love my utility iron and for less than $100 you can have one custom built.

I agree. I had not used a Cleveland wedge in a while. Picked up the RXT 4. Great wedge. Changed out both of my wedges for them.
