How Do You "Beat The Heat"

Recommended Posts

It's 96 feels like 109.

Meh. I only had 4 beers on the course. Too hot. Took a nap when I got home. Chugged a Gatorade and a couple yeti fulls of water with the 4. 5th in the clubhouse.

Will be out there again tomorrow, just a bit earlier. Same forecast tomorrow.

As cliche as it sounds, hydration is key from my experience. I use these tablets called Nuun in water, they're nice because they don't have the sugar that a gatorade would, great for hydrating and staying cool.

I cannot go without my golf fix!! I need to get all my frustration out on that golf ball, and the obscenities I throw at it as well, and every now and then I hit a good shot. But I am sucking down a lot of water lately.

73 degrees and sunny yesterday and 78 today. There is a god! Mid 60’s in the morning, windows open and a nice blanket to stay warm from the ceiling fan at night. That’s life!

nuun is great. I used it a lot when I was working on greens keeper crew.

I limited my golf to 9 holes and a cart to ride. Truck was showing 100 *F, so I took it easy and slugged down the water and took Electrolyte Salts tablet. The best part was the course was wide open. I passed one walking single and that was it, and a really nice breeze that saved the day. I played around 4 PM as it was even worse earlier, how?

In north Texas its in the 100s constantly in the summer. Like others mentioned, water, shade, cool towels soaked in the cooler and large brim hats. This year some friends have started wearing pull on arm sleeves that go from your wrist to top of bicep. They are usually white and made of performance/wicking material. They block the UV rays so you don't have to wear sunscreen on your arms, sweat does not run down to your hands and get a cooling affect from wicking/evaporation. I don't have a set yet but will probably get some for next year, i think you can find them on amazon, just make sure you get the ones with the UV protection.

Skip the beers at the turn. Drink water until you're topped off, then drink some more. I use wet towels around the neck and sometimes an umbrella. I also walk from tree to tree along the sides of the fairway to enjoy a few moments of shade. Each of these strategies helps you cope, and all together they make it bearable.

72 degrees right now in Cleveland and gorgeous. Hard to beat the Midwest from now until the snow flys, pretty much perfect. Nice to shut the AC off, open all the windows and let the house breath. Good sleeping weather when it drops into the low 60’s, love it.

I've been taking a Gatorade blend to the course, and it's helping my hydration and back nine energy level in the heat.

I like the Lemon-Lime and I believe in carb replacement in addition to electrolyte replacement, but the original Gatorade has too much sugar IMO. So I mix G2 with regular Gatorade (made with powder) half and half. The result is 55 calories per 12 oz instead of 80, and it tastes as good as the regular. (The taste of G2 at 30 calories per 12 oz is too artificial for me). Cost is about 25 cents per 12 oz.

I've been taking 50-64 oz to the course, either in a Polar Bear cooler or in a Yeti thermos/rambler combo. I drink about 6-7 oz every couple of holes.

Gift ideas?  Products I have tested.

Picked up a Habit Real Tree long sleeve shirt and used it today in the heat. It has the hoodie built in and I used it with a hat, and it works. Plus it is very comfortable. I found out I need at least a bottle of water per nine holes.

Bought a William Murray Golf Camo Boone Hat a few weeks ago. Best full brim hat ever! So light you Hadley feel it on your head. I have a couple of Titleist wide brims, and they are heavy compared to the Boonie. And yes, it is Bill Murray’s company.

Big problem with the sunscreen is that once it gets into your shirt, it probably ain't comin out. Also, you will have to reapply at least once in your round, so then you have greasy hands. I cover up now, much easier to maintain and does a better job of keeping you cool and stopping you from burning:

Straw hat, wide brimed, lots of shade and very breathable, just take it off when you are swinging your shot, hang it on your cart / clubs or just toss it on the ground.

Long sleeved white polo, got a couple and they do the job. Also like to play in short sleeves with a pair of pull on UV sleeves or the like. Again, they work for me.

Shorts with long socks, you look like a lunatic, but all golf gear makes us look a bit 'special', so just embrace it.

Always get a cart, never walk, plus you can then load up the cart with your own cooler, loads of water, lots of snacks, couple of towels for yourself, spare shirt, and no beers until the 19th.

Done the above in Florida, Portugal, Spain etc.

Just picked up a large Titleist hat and it covers everything. Today was a brutal day. If you haven't experienced southern humidity, don't. I am completely soaked. Brought some Gatorade that really helped, but it was still miserable. I walked nine and was toast.

Last week in Michigan is was pretty hot, 90s consistently for several days in a row.

Tried the Cooling Towels around the neck and just didn't love them so I snagged one of these on a whim. Was trying to see if there was any type of misting/usb fan out there you could plug into a cart but didn't find much, then stumbled across these.

Amazon.com: COREGEAR (Ultra Cool XLS USA Misters 1.5 Liter Mister & Sprayer Personal Water Pump with Full Neoprene Jacket and Built-in Carrying Strap (Grey): Sports & Outdoors

If you ride in a cart or have room in your push cart, these will absolutely do the trick to keep you cool. Toss a few ice cubes in there or even better, fill it up and let it sit in your fridge over night. The cooling sleeve will keep the water cold as long as it is out of the sun (like in the cart basket). Pump the top a few times and mist your face, down the front of the shirt, arms/wherever and you're good to go. Especially if you are riding in a cart and creating some breeze from driving. Might not be for everyone, but it worked damn well for me and was pretty cheap. Again, I pretty much always ride in a cart so it's super simple to toss in the basket, might not be the best option though if you are walking. Also, the bottle still had some water in it at the end of 18 so it's pretty good sized.
