Garmin Approach G80

Recommended Posts

This thread was great! Pulled trigger on one today... Coming from someone who doesn't even have a rangefinder, I think this will really help my game. In addition, at the school I go to, we have a golf room with just a net in our rec center, so this should be great for the off season to get some sort of feedback! Cheers

Had a WTF is Not Working with my G80 at the Practice Range Today !!!!

I do my own club work, while in lock down I reshafted a few clubs with new heads & regripped my set with GP Tour Velvet “Align” grips. Went from Standard size 49-50 gr to Mid-size 62-64 gr grips & needed to make some minor adjustments using lead tape to get the S/W back to D2 on most of my clubs.

I wish I had brought my camera and remembered the brand of range balls they were using, this is my story.

Got a large bucket fired up the G80 on “Warm-Up” mode and picked out about 10-12 of the older Red colored range balls, started with my 56* hitting off the mats, no problem I was a bit rusty, recording between 100 to 110 yds, which is a bit less than normal, pulled out my 46* recording 118-125 yds also a bit less than what I normally hit these clubs but the balls were old range balls & still going straight, all good.

Pulled out my 8i hit the last of the older red balls no problems recorded shots but less than normal. Then I started using the newer Black colored range balls and the unit would record a shot much less than the previous and then it wouldn’t record any at all, I got a lot of “0” and blank stats. Quit the Warm-Up mode then went back in to Warm-Up, hit a few more shots all no recordings, went to my long irons, thought maybe I needed to generate more S/S, still nothing. Getting frustrated, I shut the G80 down & powered it up again, went into Warm-Up mode, & still recording 0’s . I started raising it & even laid it down flat, moving the ball closer/farther than 12”, couldn’t get it to work. Pulled out my new 19* Hybrid and moved off the mats onto the grass, hit one, nothing hit second it finally recorded 210 yds, hit another nothing, got p-off and shut the G80 off and put it away in the shade, needed to focus on the clubs I reshafted with new heads.

Pulled the G80 out again about 10 minutes later fired it up in Warm-up and the same results, you would hit a shot it was going through the process working and then record "0" NO readings. Put it away, got home went on line to do some trouble shooting, Garmin has some info that I found is worth sharing below.

When I read the G80 will not detect practice balls, I shook my head they must mean those plastic whiffle balls not range balls, right ?  So I got my shag bag of lost and found regulation golf balls and went into the field next door with my 46* & my 8i and hit a dozen or more balls, every shot recorded there wasn’t one 0 or missed recording …. a big sigh of relief, those cheap most likely made in China range balls must have had some impact on the unit’s radar or performance.

Trust this may be helpful to others following this thread who experience similar issues …. If your getting "0" & No readings, it’s not your unit it’s the range balls.

Cheers

David

I was messing with the settings today and noticed the G80 has a slope setting. Played all last year without it. Pretty cool.

EDIT: Problem Resolved .... see the next post.

Played 3 rounds since our course was allowed to open, I use my G80 to record my scores, after the latest update, I noticed the unit NO longer gives me the option to record shot shape (Left/Centre/Right) Fairway or most important GIR & Putts per hole, now the unit only allows you to record strokes per hole from 1 to 16. When I connect my G80 to my PC and upload to Garmin Connect to view my Dash Board & my recent Score Card, you are able to go back and edit your score card on your PC, but who wants to do that!

I hope they can bring back the feature of recording GIR & Putts per hole on their next update.

Cheers

David

Previous Software allowed you to record this info as posted on July 02, Post #174, Page 6.

Played around with my G80 a bit more & fix'd my own problem ..... for whatever the reason the "Stat Tracking" feature was turned OFF.

To check if yours is ON or OFF follow these next steps.

After you power up your unit, the Main Screen comes on ..... Start New Round - Warm Up - Tempo Training - etc .... at the bottom hit the UP Arrow.Hit ..... Settings. At top hit .... Scoring.Method = Stroke Play .... you have the option to turn Scoring Handicap or Stat Tracking .... On or OFF.Hit ... On - Turned Stat Tracking and Scoring Handicap both ON ... went back into the system hit Start New Round .... it now allows me to record Fairway Shots, GIR & Putts per Hole and my Handicap, too.

Problem solved.

Cheers

I just bought one of these and haven't updated the software yet. IIRC, there were some issues(w/ launch monitor info and warm-up mode issues) between updates. Can't find the post atm.

Should I update the software before I use it? 2.4 is on it now.

Thanks for any info.

I would update to the latest version which has some improvements over past software, to download you need to run Garmin Express on you P.C. or other device plug in your G80 with the USB and it will launch Sync & upload the latest version.

To determine which version you are running follow these steps.

Power the G80 up ...... Start New Round - Warm Up - Tempo Training - etc ....

Hit - Arrow up button on the bottom.

Hit - "Settings".

Scroll down to the bottom of the Menu

Hit - "About"

It will display the current Software version on your G80 and give you the Unit I.D. # .... mine is version 2.70 Course view = North/South America 6.2 ... etc.

Trust this helps ...

Pardon me if this question has been answered already, but can you measure the distance between two points, both of which are NOT your current location, with this unit? I am looking for a GPS that allows me to measure landing areas from left to right. Thank you!

Used my G80 for the first time today.

Launch Monitor:

I went to the range and hit PW-Driver. I was very pleased with the LM function as it picked up most of my shots and provided what I would estimate are close yardages, when compared to my rangefinder.

GPS:

I also used it on the course, playing 18, and found it to be very accurate with charting various distance to the green, bunkers etc. I never lost signal and there was no lag when moving to my ball or the next hole.

TL;DR: As a high handicapper, I would recommend this.

Interesting question, Dan. I never even thought to try such a thing with mine. If you don't have an answer before Friday, I'll give it a shot when I'm out then

It's possible to measure the distance between two points, neither of which is your current location, by using the Touch Targeting function. However, one of the points is the pin by default. For example, after you've teed off on a par 5, you could then determine the distance to layup in front of a creek crossing the fairway by touching the screen near the creek; the screen would then also automatically give you the distance from that layup point to the pin (i.e., two points, neither of which is your current location).

I've used my orange whip trainer & the unit picked up the S/S, tried it with my driver & from what I recall the numbers were off (lower) quite a bit, haven't tried it lately, perhaps others here can respond.

I noticed that as well, however, WRX members who purchased the G80 & set it next to a Trackman have said the numbers were about the same as the Cadillac Gadget. I took mine into the PGA S/S sim in Palm Desert, Calif this past winter and my G80 recorded my S/S lower than the SIM but the SIM ball distance measured further than my G80 numbers. For the price of the G80, I'm completely satisfied with it's launch monitor & it's GPS capabilities.

Great thread folks, just a couple of questions in my mind:

1. does the G80 work with SuperSpeed Golf sticks?

2. does it allow you to record which clubs was used during practice and on the course?

Really keen on finding something that can allow me collect more data about my game, thanks in advance

I' tried recording S/S using my orange ball swing trainer, it records but not accurate, no idea about the Speed Stick ... I would guess it doesn't.

Go back and read Post 263 dated april 11th, you can buy the optional Garmin TruSwing Swing Sensor, I don't have one so can't say for sure how it works.

Cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

I just finished a live chat with a customer support rep from Garmin, was having some issues with the latest update, got it fix'd.

When we concluded I asked him when the new G80 would be released and what are they calling it ..... he said the G82 & it was released 2 weeks ago.

Did a search and didn't find anything .... anyone here see any Garmin announcements on the new G82 ? EDIT: ... hope he wasn't trollin me because I bit hook, line & sinker!
