Classic WITB WTFrick!!?

Recommended Posts

I’m fed up! Why is it so hard in this age of information to find out what different players had in their bag through the years. It takes a ridiculous amount of research to find info on the players of yesteryear. In my mind I imagine a list of like the top 25 from each era and what they used at least in the pinnacle of their career. Is that really so much to ask... heck I’d settle for top ten!! Top 5!!!! Anything really other than the same old shots of Tigers bag that seems to be all I ever come across when looking for old WITB info. Maybe I just suck at navigating this and other forums and the web too... someone please level with me! Am I missing something other than maybe a couple screws upstairs?? ?

I'd guess that as a lot of players were under contract to manufacturers, both they and the manufacturer wouldn't want it to be known that they were actually using another manufacturers clubs so nobody talked about WITB.

Also it wasn't such a thing back in the day.

It's not all about the score.

Well... somehow it happened. Go figure somehow in all my googling I never came across the WITB time machine articles which are of course from this very site. Id sure like to know where they get their info but heck I’m happy as can be.. and it’s almost like what I was asking for a list from a certain year and the top five players clubs from that time!! ? I hope they keep it going and really hope they go back to some of the really old school players. Imagine some Sam Snead or Hogan WITB! That’s what I dream of... yes I have issues lol

  • 2 weeks later...

When I first started trying to shoot WITB's out on Tour in 2004 most of the players then questioned why I wanted to shoot their clubs. When I told them there were thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of gear heads who wanted to know what they were playing, a lot of them them told me no. Social Media wasn't really around then and these players didn't see the need to promote any sponsors on a "golf website"!

I started covering some college events and as soon as the younger guys got out on Tour and social media became a "thing", it became easier. More agents realized getting the sponsors out in front of Golfwrx members. Also, After I had been out there for 4-5 years the players all knew me.

The first time I asked Steve Williams if I could shoot Tiger's WITB. He said "why" and I said why not! So he said okay, go ahead.

Thanks for that, I was thinking that if someone influential, eg Tiger, was happy to allow it then it may have opened the door and most players would be keen to participate. I can also imagine their equipment sponsors not being pleased if they were missing out on the free publicity. Have you come across any that were using clubs different to their sponsored brands? If so, how did that go?

Having owned close to 50 sets of irons since 1975,most in last 30 years and player type forged but really all types of OEMs, I think I qualify as having interest in equipment. That said you occasionally see a bygone WITB of a popular Pro in articles but I don't think the masses give a Frick (to use your term)about a glossary of enough to warrant the effort to research such a list.
