2020 Q Star Tour

Disclaimer- I haven’t hit the vast majority of current ball models. My driver SS is 100mph. Your results will likely be different.

The Q Star Tour V3 is a tour level ball for swing speeds under 100mph. It has no performance compromises. In all regards, it’s essentially a performance clone of the 2019 Chrome Soft. It’s short game performance is as good as any ball. Its driver and wood characteristics are of the higher launch, lower spin variety. In this regard, it clearly different than a V1 or V1x, which it isn’t trying to be.

At its current multi-pack price of $22 it has its own value category. If you’re in its swing speed window and are looking for balanced play characteristics (rather than a distance or ‘straight’ model), there’s no substantially better ball at any price.

The 2019 and 2020 Chrome Soft are (obviously) very similar. To me, there were two differences that were significant enough I believed I could say for certain existed.

Feel - the 2020 is livelier. Most will take it as being ‘faster’ feeling. The downside to a lively feeling ball to me is that pretty much every shot, regardless of quality, feels ‘fast’. The 2019 and QST3 feel a bit deader/softer. To me, that’s a feeling of ‘composure’. Personal preference.

Ball flight - I think that the 2020 CS is a bit higher compression, and/or the cover is a bit harder. It seems to launch a little flatter and lower than the 2019, which for me launched too high on most clubs other than wedges. The difference is subtle though. Kind of like a little testosterone sprinkles on your salad.

Again though, there is only one product in all of golf IMO that breaks the cost to performance barrier so grossly as does the QST3. It’s probably better not to discuss it really.

QST3 are $32.99/dzn, unless you get the buy 2 get 1 free deal.

I've played two rounds with them, and am happy so far. Very soft feel off the putter, which is what drew me to them. I don't plan on switching at this point.

I have to concur with your assessment after spending some time chipping and putting with the following 4 balls:

2020 Chrome Soft

Srixon Q Star Tour 3

Bridgestone Tour B RX 2020

Snell MTB-X

In my opinion, the 2020 CS gave a much more livelier feeling off the wedge and putter than the QST3. I had a very hard time making the adjustment and constantly found that the QST3 ran out too far on chips and resulted in coming up short on putts.

The Bridgestone RX felt the firmer of the 4 balls and this was also a little off putting when switching from one ball to the other. While I've played the RX a few rounds, I found that off the driver and irons, it was shorter than the 2020 CS.

I found the MTB-X and 2020 CS very similar in feel off the putter and the wedge. The 2020 CS might be just a touch softer feeling, but not much. I could play either one, and have, and right now I'm playing the CS 2020 because I really find it to be a great all round ball.

I'll probably pass the QST3 on to some of my granddaughters who will appreciate the softer feeling, but there's just not enough feedback for me.

I like the Z Star... I have at least 3 dozen of them, but I think I like the 2020 CS. I'll probably use them interchangeably and decide on just one for the season.

Last night I took the QST3, 2020 CS, 2020 Tour B RX, and Snell MTB-X to the short practice area. The results were as follows:

QST3 was way too soft and constantly came up short on putts. Not as bad chipping, but not the top performer either. Didn't check up like the others when played for a stop and drop and did not roll out like the others when playing a bump and run.

Tour B RX felt firmer than any of the rest but still performed pretty good. I could play it.

Snell MTB-X was almost identical to the 2020 CS. I could literally not tell the difference.

Smell MTB-X is cheaper when purchased in bulk but I might still give the edge to the 2020 CS because it was slightly softer but still performed very well.

Next time, Z Star, MTB-X, and 2020 CS. I'll let you know.

I like the QST3 because it's so soft off the putter. If the MTB-X didn't feel so hard off the putter, I'd still play that.
