Callaway Mavrik 3 wood whistling sound

I just purchased a Callaway Mavrik standard 3 wood 15 degree. I notice a high pitched whistling sound when I swing it. I don't know if it is the two small holes where the jailbreak bars are located or it is the slanted grooves on the sole causing the noise , but the sound is sort of distracting. It is way higher pitched than the normal swooshing sound of a club being swung. Has anyone noticed any such sound and if so, were you able to fill in anything to fix it? I have not experimented with anything yet to solve the sound....Thanks for any info..

Have you removed all of the tags and labels off the shaft? I have found that they can make noise when you swing.

Yes, I took all those off. If that is the design and intent, I think that would be most unusual. I had someone else swing it and it's way more noticeable when swinging than standing nearby.

Well, turns out that the whistling is coming from the weight in the back of the club. When it is removed there is no whistle or when I put tape over it, no whistle. I compared it to a friend who has an Epic flash and his back weight is almost flush with the clubhead. Mine is recessed about 3 to 4 mm. Even when I put tape over the weight only while it is in the club it still whistled. So it is apparently the amount of recess causing the turbulence resulting in the whistle. I will fill the recess with either lead tape or silicone seal to make it level and that should solve the problem. It is kind disappointing that I have to modify a brand new club to keep it from making an unusual noise.

Dude, how high is your swing speed? Are you a regular guy, or a closet tour pro?

I would take it back to where I bought it and ask them to replace it.

No whistling for me with the same club. 95-100 mph driver swing speed.

My driver swing speed is about 95. I'm 66 years old and a 2 handicap. I bought it on Ebay, so not really an option to return it. I finally sorted it out by placing a flat washer under the weight which brought it back to level with the surface of the club. That ended any whistling sound. A friend just bought one like mine and I swung it today with no whistling sound. I know he has not modified his at all, but did have some dirt inside the area of the weight. I hit it several times today and it seemed fine. I am going to give this club a try for a while before I purchase a 5 wood like it. I don't change clubs often, so it is hard to warm up to a new fairway wood. I play Mizuno 825 pro irons for the lack of offset and great feel. I've had the same TaylorMade Mid Rescue hybrids for many years. I only change drivers every few years when something really seems like an improvement. This Mavirk 3 wood replaces a TaylorMade 300 Series 3 wood circa 2000. See, I told you I don't change equipment often. I love the feel of the old TaylorMade, but the new tech is much more forgiving and longer too.

Just an educated guess but it sounds like original owner put in an aftermarket, non-OEM weight into the head to change swing weight or because they lost the original. Go online to Golfworks and order a weight that fits properly.

Hi, bit late to this party but I’ve just bought the Mavrik sub zero 3 wood.

In the shop taped up it was fine, took it to the range and straight away it started whistling every swing.

My swing speed is around 98. The weights both sit in a recess so not flush and you’re right, it is off putting!

The driver somewhat has that sound too... i wouldnt say its distracting... then again maybe your whistle is much louder?

have ever noticed this without reading this thread, but I was swinging my Mavrik 3+ today at the range and noticed the same thing. 
 

I’ll probably take a weight to the hardware store and see if I can find some nylon washers or something else to space the weights out to flush with the sole.
