Who chips with what?

The percentages quoted are based on the percentage of the time that I have to hit a wedge.

I have a set PW that I probably use only 5% of the time. I think this is because I'm playing from the men's tees and not a longer hitter, so I end up within 75 yards of the green when pitching.

I have a Callaway Jaws MD5 48* approach wedge that I probably only use 10% of the time. Again, it has to be that certain distance and a full swing.

I have a Callaway Jaws MD5 54* THAT I use probably 20% of the time. Generally only for full swings.

I have a Callaway Jaws MD5 58* that I use the rest of the time and seldom for full swings. It's my favorite wedge and I could probably get rid of the 48* and 54* and not suffer much.

Depends on how far of a run out - short of the green with room to go low I like to use as low lofted club as possible, typically an 8, 9 or pitching wedge. If I am short side, or need the ball to stop fast, then i use a 60 degree (12* bounce). I use to use a 52 degree all over, but I've gotten much better with a 60 degree wedge, and found the 8, 9 and Pw are more predictable.

having learned at a young age playing a half set with no wedges, i learned to chip with the 5,7,9 irons as well as hitting lots of half shots. When i got old enough to afford a wedge a pw and sw (hogan special) i used it for every shot for about 2 seasons. When i played a lot of golf and practiced, the 54 sw was my weapon of choice. But as i play less now (maybe 20 rounds a year) i have gone back to older chipping styles (8 iron) and less lob shots. I find that my touch is better and i save more strokes vs hitting the cool lob shot that does not always release on the green properly. So in 50 years of playing golf, i have come full circle. Life is funny that way.

If it needs to roll - 52

If there's not a lot of green - 58

Occasional bump and runs, but don't practice those as much as I should

I do the vast majority of my work with my 52° Ping Glide 2.0 stealth wedge. It's what I'm most comfortable with, so I try to stick with the one club for most green side work.

If I need to get up over something, I use my 58°. On the fringe with a long run at the hole I have been playing around with using a hybrid.

I'm not a great golfer, and don't golf as much as I should, so I try to stick with one club as much as possible for these finesse shots for familiarity sake.

I’ve only been playing for a year. For me 56 degree 80% of the time. I got comfortable manipulating the face some and moving ball position to effect trajectory. I’ll go down to a 60 and up to a 52 if I need the height or if it’s a longer green and want a little more roll.

I tried the multiple club option as that’s what I hear most coaches preaching but I for the life of me cannot get a good feel for distance control no matter how much I practice that. I always ending up hitting the lower lofted clubs too far past the hole.

Around the green I use my 56 degree about 80% of the time. The rest of the time I may use my PW or 9 iron if I need to run it some distance.

I use the 58 a lot on most shots unless I want a lot of run out. Then I use a pw Or gap wedge for medium run or from light rough. For long running shots a 7 iron.

I carry a 60, a 54, and 48Wedge.

I use two chips a higher softer front foot and a lower more rolling back foot chip depending on how much green and rough I have to work with. I'd say about 60% or better of my chips are done with my 54. I use my 60 for all the short soft stuff (maybe 25-30%) and the 48 (or sometimes a PW or even 9 iron) if there's a lot of green to cover and I want to roll it a bit more. The way I learned was to make fewer types/sizes of swings and just club up or down accordingly.

My chipping and pitching has always been the strongest part of my game. If I could ever hit fairways consistently... I might actually enjoy playing golf!! :-P

I have, as of late, been taking 2 wedges to the green with me, no matter what. My sand wedge (54º) and my 60º bent to 62º. I can play a variety of shots with both of them and it really depends on how the lie is and what I want to do when it hits the green.

My 52° gap wedge would be my most used club around the green. This is generally where I have to pop the ball in the air, carry the ball a certain distance onto the green and let it run out. If I have no green to work with I use the 58° wedge. Where I'm on the fringe and have a lot more room to chip and run I'll use the 9 iron or PW. These 4 clubs tend to be my go to. Should perhaps chip more with the 7 & 8 irons but the 9-LW are my usual choices.

Just about every club in the bottom of my bag, 8 iron - 60º.

Every shot needs something different. I think you'll see pro's on TV using a little more loft around the greens because they tend to play on greased lightning greens. I'll use loft as a bit of a buffer on really fast greens when I want to avoid the run out when a small miss could really get away from me and roll off a green or something.

58 degree is my default. Depending on hill I am chipping into, how much green I have to work with, how far I need to chip, the height I need, I will chip all the way down to a 7i. It’s very rare I go under a 8 or 9. I feel it out everytime. Gotta be careful with those longer irons tho. They like to come off hot compared to the 58 LOL

My default is a 54 degree played fairly standard... goal of pretty much 80% in the air, 20% roll out...

if I have more room to run and a longer chip, I’ll go down to 50.

short sided, I’ll hit 60.

i practice a variety of shots with all three clubs.

60 percent of the time with a 53 degree wedge with 11 degrees of bounce. I like plenty of bounce for chipping.20 percent of the time with a 48 degree wedge with 10 degrees of bounce. When I want it to roll out and/or have a long run-up to the hole.20 percent of the time with a 58 degree wedge with 8 degrees of bounce. Short sided. Tight lies. 0 percent with any other club, except putter on smooth fringe.

Thats almost a blueprint copy of my short game. Only difference is I use a PW for the bump and runs from the fringe (or sitting up in greenside rough) and my SW is 56*. Those 2 clubs do 90 percent of my greenside shots. 60 only comes out when I am in serious trouble.

I think that would be an interesting thread but I agree with the previous poster that you should start a new thread asking that question. In this thread I was interested in seeing what everyone uses. It would definitely make a good thread though to see how the better players are handling their business around the greens...

Now I use mostly 2 wedges, I used to only use my highest lofted wedge (58*) but that changed when I moved to Northern Michigan, courses are a lot softer up here and I needed more roll out. Now I use my 54* for low / running shots and my 58* for high shots of short low shots.

I have always been a fan of learning how to use one wedge well around the green, but also learn what shots you struggle with, and go pick another club for those shots you struggle with.
