I'm not a huge Smiths/Morrissey fan but How Soon is Now is an all time great song in any era. It's haunting and beautiful at the same time. There's so much "texture" to it. And Morrissey is at his finest.

I remember going to see Rattle and Hum at the movies. Twice. Loved it and that album.

The sad thing is my music has changes do much in the last 30 years it is crazy.

99 was my year and I did not listen to any of that music then. I always listened to classic rock from the 60s and 70's

if I had to choose my three that I would listen to now

it would be

Write this down- George Strait

Pop a Top - Alan Jackson

Who needs Pictures- Brad Paisley

There were just too many great songs to choose from.

1970 was probably one the greatest years for rock/pop music.

Graduated from high school. Next stop, University of Saigon...

Look at this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Year-End_Hot_100_singles_of_1970

The single worst concert I remember seeing is Blondie in 2019. And I don’t say this lightly. I left in the middle of it.

and I like Blondie.

You never went to see Sly and the Family Stone.  For me, "Light my Fire", "Satisfaction", "I Gotta Get Outta This Place".

Soloman, thanks for your service to our country.

I would have been 7 yo in 1970.  Vietnam was raging as was the R&R.  Yep, I remember every song on that link you posted.  In daylight, those songs were blaring out open summer windows.  At night, it was Walter Cronkite on the TV.

Loved the Guess Who then (yes, as a second grader) and still do.

Great post, my man.

It was painful to limit to 3.

A little late to this, but as a '76 grad those were the big three back in the day in terms of radio airplay.  You could add in Long Time by Boston and have a top four.

To take a slightly different take on the original question, I'll give you 3 songs that I have on my playlist now from that era.

Royal Scam -- Steely Dan

The Pretender -- Jackson Browne

Flay at Night -- Chilliwack

Yes, that was '76 and is on my short list of memorable tracks when one was looking for a hard rocking tune beyond the obvious choices of the era.

Fly Like and Eagle got tons of radio play back in the day thus eliminating it from the underdog  list, but it's ethereal quality always appealed to me.  It would be interesting to compose a list of B side tracks that were favourites from one's graduating year.
