Bucket list

Recommended Posts

Whistling Straits. My wife and I are visiting Chicago (from NZ) then she’s off to a conference and I’ll make my way up to Kohler for a few days. Very excited!

i would have loved to do Bandon Dunes but the logistics were a bit trickier and I think it would be better to go there with a group of mates. Did Pebble last year, what a thrill!

This wasn't really on my list, but we're going with (golfing) friends to Spain and Portugal this September. I think its 4 or 5 days on the Costa del Sol in Spain, and then 4 more just north of Lisbon. Two new countries, 5 or 6 new golf courses, mnew experiences all around, that sure fits the idea of a bucket list trip.

I like this thread! Not that I'm likely to play any of them this year, but I think my bucket list is now limited to the following:

Pine Valley

Fishers Island

Winged Foot

St Andrews Old Course*

Seminole

Real Club Valderrama*

The * are for courses I probably will someday get to play; the others are unlikely.

Other courses I'm really looking forward to include:

Stone Eagle

Pasatiempo

Pebble Beach

All the Bandon Dunes tracks

Ocean Course at Kiawah

Similar for me Hawkeye, I’m perfectly happy on one of the local munis around the area. Much like my taste in most areas, food, vehicles, clothes, etc, it doesn’t take much to satisfy me. That being said, Pebble Beach was the one place I did want to go. I think we made the trip around 10 years ago and it 100% lived up to expectations. So I’m pretty much satisfied. I’m disappointed that I wasn’t able to capitalize on the numerous invites I had to Sand Hills (only about a 150 mile drive for me at that time, and a few members who were local), but I don’t lose any sleep over it. Bandon Dunes always intrigues me, mainly because of the rave reviews it gets here, then I remember that I don’t really care for courses that are that open since I don’t see very well. I “need” those tree line corridors to help me see the framework of the hole (why I like the Pines course better than the Dunes at the Prairie Club). So probably won’t make it there either.

Probably the closest the list worthy I have now is The Old Course (I know, sounds silly since it doesn’t provide the framing I like either), but I’m never going to make it over there so it’s really no more likely for me to play than Augusta is. It’s back to the “scruffies” for me, but that’s ok as I’m pretty scruffy myself!?

Enjoy Pebble......and make sure and play Pasatiempo too.

Your post got me thinking if there were any courses left for me that I would consider "bucket list" worthy.

I'm lucky enough to have played pretty much all of the publicly accessible bucket courses in North America after finally managing to play Pebble in 2018. There are plenty on the top 100 list that I haven't played but most of those aren't what I'd call bucket worthy. There are a couple that I'd like to get back to, Whistling Straits and Spyglass are probably top of that list.

Of the courses in NA that I haven't played yet I'm going to say Sand Valley and Streamsong are next on the not quite as buckety bucket list.

There are a few more in the Scotland and Ireland that I'd like to get to but I have played the Old Course and few of the other big names already.

I have another acquaintance who I’ve played with a couple times who plays Augusta several times a year (notice my shirt above.) I’m hoping for an invite one day as that will be the only way I get there.

  • 1 year later...

I notice this thread has been very quiet for a year or so!! No wonder but hopefully we are all up and about next year. I'm not getting any younger so the clock she is a'tickin - as a result I have persuaded the other half to go to Europe where she has granted me a week ie 7 days golfing wherever I like. So I have decided on a mini bucket list trip to England:

Reigate

The Addington

Royal Cinque Ports

Royal Ashdown Forest

Worplesdon

St Georges Hill

London Scottish

That last course is near Wimbledon and is one of the oldest in the UK. The rule is you have to wear a red shirt so the local walkers can see who might be about to hit a golf ball in their direction.

I had an amazing summer.  Was able to know off a few courses I didn't think I would ever play.  I went on a trip to Minneapolis and was able to play Somerset.  Although it's not a well known course, it is a true gem.  Only 165 members.  There were seven groups all day and my host said it was one of the busiest days of the summer.  Back in September, I went to North Carolina and played Carolina Golf Club, The Honors, Wade Hampton, and Peachtree.  I'm off to Phoenix next week to play Troon CC, Kierland, and Wickenberg Ranch.  Next March, I'm heading back to Phoenix to golf Estancia.  Being from Wisconsin, I hope to finally check off Whistling Straits.  Sadly, I have only played the Irish course.
