Shaft comparable to Modus 120

Recommended Posts

A little background, over the past year I have made some drastic (for the better) swing changes. Along with these changes I decided playing blades was not in the best interest for me shooting my lowest score possible. I picked up a set of 718 cb’s with stiff modus 120’s in them. I’m not in love with the heads but the shafts are perfect. Now my issue is, is there a similar shaft that promotes a lower ball flight. My swing changes combined with equipment changes has helped me pick up a couple yards a club but my ball flight has gone through the roof. The peak height doesn’t bother me as much as the ballooning at times does.

Any recommendations?

If you believe the Mizuno Shaft optimizer, it gave me recommendations of Modus 120, Project X LZ, and Dynamic Gold 120.

these are all slightly lighter shafts, the modus and PX LZ both have similar profiles. I’m not a fan of the DG 120, but full disclosure not a fan of any DG shaft, the PX LZ was my preference of the 3, might be worth a try for you.

No way, these do not feel similar... At least not to me. Modus has a decent kick to it, C taper does not.

Closest feel to modus I personally feel is the PX LZ. However, before you go changing shafts (because they have limited effect on things like "ballooning") I would try a ball like a TP5x, which is one of the lowest spinning tour balls available now. If you swing change made your AoA steeper, this could explain your increase in spin due to increasing your spin loft on any given club.

Flex means nothing really. Sometimes you can look at an EI profile and glean some information... and the EI for 120 is much different than most iron shafts. Most KBS shafts are pretty linear, and don't quite have much kick/feel to them, at least the ones in the 115g+ range. They are very stable shafts. Good for aggressive loaders of the shaft or for those who like a more firm feel. Both Modus 120 and Project X LZ have softer middles which give that "kick" feel to them. Everyone feels things different but I would really never compare the C Taper series to the Modus line.

I have a steeper AoA on a slightly shallower swing. My biggest swing changes have come from stopping swaying and proper weight distribution during my swing.

I have a club with a C Taper Lite shaft; I bought 3 separate 7 irons on the Bay and used them as demos to see what heads I liked, and hate that shaft. It feels like I have no idea where the club head is.

My previous sets had PX 5.5, which I liked but wanted a slightly higher ball flight and TT Elevate 105 which I hated.

The other thing about Modus 120 at least for me is there isn’t anything else like it from a feel perspective. PX LZ felt terrible to me, super loose in the mid section. Modus 120 feels the best of anything out there and fortunately for me, fit the best numbers wise. But like everything, it’s so player dependent. That’s why the fitting process is so important (and having a good fitter), something that took me too long to figure out.

Yeah so now that you come from the inside but give a more descending blow to the ball, you are very liking increasing the spin loft. Do you notice the ball launching a touch lower but then suddenly rising, and even stalling out but with the same clubs as before? Well.. like I said, that's probably fine, just try a lower spinning ball. TP5/x is the perfect candidate... AVX like mentioned above is okay but I find it's a little too soft. Maybe even Srixon XV but I find them to be very firm and not the best feel.

Relative to modus 120s, the C taper lite I would guess is causing that feeling due to a) much more stiff mid section and b) possibly a higher balance point. If you like the modus 120S but want a little lower flight.. you probably need to lower your spin rates. What ball are you in now? If you're already in the TP5 then that's a different story compared to if you're in something like a BXS or ProV or other higher spin ball. .

Are you keeping the 718 CB heads? You mentioned your loved the shafts but not the heads. Maybe a change in heads (if that is an option) might be what is needed?

What I've found is ballooning is more related to ball type and loft. With your current swing changes (bravo to you for making those adjustments), your dynamic loft might have changed as well. As someone mentioned above, might be a good time to get fit again to see what others things changed in your swing when you made your initial swing adjustments.

But if shafts are the issues, have your thought about hard stepping the shafts? Should lower flight a tad without adding much stiffness.

Good luck.

I also love the Modus 120, have played them in the last few sets of irons in 120X but am looking into the 120TX. The only other shaft that works as well for me is the standard Project X 6.5 or 7.0. The PX does produce a flatter ball flight for me vs the Modus.

As others have said, changing balls might have the most influence and is alot cheaper of an experiment than trying different shafts. Most companies offer trial packs, or grab a sleeve at the proshop, if not im sure you could post in the WTB section for a sleeve of anything you might want to try.

PX LZ 5.5 is the closest head to head head comparison and has a stiffer tip. So noticeably flight would be 6.0. The Modus 120 has a very odd bend profile that is very exaggerated.

I'm telling you as someone who owns both they are not remotely similar in any regards on the course or in testing.

If you like the DG profile you will most likely hate the Modus 120 Flex for Flex they feel nothing alike.

And im telling you that dont compare flex to flex. Nippons, especially the 120 “feel” very weak and soft, and from a frequency standpoint, they are significantly weaker flex to flex to other brands. Im also not even really talking about feel, but the actual stiffness profile. On paper its nearly identical. Feel is subjective.

To JP, the modus 120s feels unique.

The 120s feels like a shaft JP is going to completely overpower but it holds up when he steps on it. It’s a mid flightier That is easy to sky but it isn’t ballooning.

They are strange. Never feels like he hits them pure but the results are there when he plays them. Harder to flight low in wind play.

I loved the Modus 120x but ended up picking up a set of clubs that have TT XP 115 shafts in them, and I love these as well.

I don’t know about the bend profiles in the Modus 120 or the XP 115, but both have seemed to work well for me, both mid flight, Mid spin....... the weight is very similar from the Modus 120 to the Xp 115’s, and if you are having a hard time finding XP 115’s, you could always go with the Dynalite Gold XP’s which are nearly identical, both models are in the same weight range depending on flex.

Modus 120s is 114 grams

Modus 120x is 120 grams

TT Xp115 S300 is 117 grams

TT XP x100 is 120 grams

Dynalite Gold XP S300 is 117 grams

Dynalite Gold XP x100 is 120 grams

The XP label doesn’t mean high launch at least in this weight, unlike the XP 95’s ... they are worth checking out........ here is a link below comparing them to KBS C-Taper lites and KBS Tour V’s

Hope that helps! http://www.dlancegolf.com/from-the-lab/true-temper-xp-115-shaft-review/
