Refurbished MacGregor Toney Penna eye-o-matic TP Special woods

My understanding is that my uncle found these woods in my dad's garage years ago and sent them to MacGregor to be refurbished. Is that even a thing? They look brand new. I have the 1 and 2 woods. There used to be a 3 wood but my dad had a bit of a temper and the story goes that after 2 or 3 balls into the lake on a long carry, he launched the club, never to be seen again.

Just trying to figure out the history of these. I know my dad bought them in a pawn shop back around 1960.

That looks like at '54 or '55 Toney Penna special. It was advertised as a duplicate of the woods Toney Penna played. It was originally coal black, had a C shaft, and red beveled edge cafskin grip.

Penna's don't get the love that the 693/M85s get, or the high bids on ebay, but I really like my Penna clubs. I have two sets of 2/3/4 Penna SEOMs (some day a driver will cross my path) and a complete set of 1958 Toney Penna TP1Ws, woods and irons. The driver on the TP1W looks just like my 653, so I believe the TPs are a continuation of that family.

It's impossible to guess how and where they were refinished, but it looks like a solid job. By the time I started buying Macs in the mid '80s, I never heard of clubs going back to the factory, but it could have been a thing earlier.

Those are sweet clubs and one of the sets I look out for when hunting down classics...just so I could take a few swings with them. I hope you plan to play with them, they deserve to be back on the course.

They could have been refurbished at MacGregor years ago. Some companies would do that. In 1971 I sent my Hogan driver back to the Hogan company to be refurbished and it came back looking like new. Those are some very nice Penna's. Hard to find them in good shape like those.

The TP Special was a special order offering in 1954. These were a model 40 driver and fairway woods. The pro line clubs were mostly model 69 heads. These are nicely done.

These were the woods I played with back in my early/mid teens back in the seventies. I still remember driving a 350 yard par 4 back in the day with them (oh to be young again). It was soon after this that my uncle spotted them and got them refurbished. Not sure I would have the guts to hit them now. Would probably put a dummy mark on one. I think I'll just mount them on the wall of the man cave and let them stay in retirement.
