I've developed a strokes gained spreadsheet and anyone interested can use it!

This is super helpful, looking forward to giving it a go this season! Sorry a bit late to the party here but I've been looking for a better way to track my real weaknesses and I think this will hit the notes.

On a separate note, I see from your sample data that you play a lot at Sarah Shank... do you know Eric Huther, one of the pros there? He's an old college teammate of mine... small world!

Small world indeed. I know Eric well and even get to play with him every once in a while. Great dude! Hope this helps you out this season... We're going to play Shank tomorrow... It could be ugly!

I tried looking through the thread so I didn't ask a question already answered but can't seem to figure it out. What are the different shot types? This is my guess but let me know if I'm off:

F-Fairway

G-Green

R-Rough

RC- Recovery

S-Sand

T-Tee

Thanks!

You got it!

Sorry. One more. Looking at the data tab the strokes gained table for PGA/80/90 is all the same number in each column. At least in the version I'm using. Am I missing something or did I screw that up?

Hi Schackmj,

I think you must be using _Fred_'s version of the spreadsheet. He developed a different spreadsheet using the one I developed as a base. Unfortunately, I didn't follow his version all that closely because my version fit my purposes. However, I think he's had a lot of success with his version and it's been updated several times. Here's a link to his thread: http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1132133-golfwrx-strokes-gained-dashboard/

If you can't find the answer you're looking for in his thread, just post the question there. I'm thinking he'd added those sections to the data tab with the intent to complete it when/if someone developed data similar to the data available for pros. I don't know if he ever got that data added.

Hope that helps,

Brian

Fair enough. There were a lot of versions flying around in the thread and guess I went in a different direction. Would you mind linking your most up to date version as well.

Thanks for all the work.

No worries. The most recent versions of my spreadsheets are on page 3 of this thread, post 83. I'm not sure how to link to that specific post, though I'm sure there's a way to do so.

Hi Brian,

Hi others,

I saw your post passing by and thought it would be time to update the non-pro data!

Therefore I have created following post : http://www.golfwrx.c...eference-table/

Let me know if you would be ok to use your data too :good:

Cheers,

_Fred_

Just wanted to say thanks for putting this together. I have used the online calculator periodically, but wanted a way to track SG over a period of time and this is perfect.

There's something weird in the original PGA Tour data that you (Broadie) uses.

If I have a tee shot of 100 yards the tour avg. is 2.92 strokes.

If I have the same distance from the FW, the tour avg is 2.80 strokes.

Surely you tee it in such a way that you improve the lie compared to an average lie on a FW?

In fact, the FW distance with equal strokes as a T100 shot is F137, meaning a Tee shot of 100 yards is just as tough as a FW shot of 137 yards. That seems a bit counterintuitive.

Any ideas what can cause the difference?

That's a good observation and a good question, and I don't have a great answer. I will say that the data presented in the book is based on shotlink data from the tour. I doubt they had many relevant data points for tee shots of 100 yards. I think some of the data may be extrapolated based on other distances. I don't remember whether he specifically addressed those anomaly yardages in the book or not. While not a perfect system, I think it's safe to say it's the best available system to compare the difficulty of shots of one type with shots of another.

I noticed a couple other anomalies as well, which are more easily explained. As fairway distances get closer to the hole, there's a yardage range where the strokes to finish actually goes up instead of going down. That's a bit more easily explained for the pros because they prefer to have full shots with wedges that partial swings. With sand, it's even more pronounced. Nobody likes those mid-range bunker shots. Much better to have a full swing or a greenside shot.

The commercial Golfmetrics app costs very little, is easy to use, and is super informative for anyone with a single digit handicap. I highly recommend it. Double digit handicappers are probably best counting 'strokes lost' to penalties, 2-chips and 3-putts, and getting that number closer to zero. You can do that in your head.

Has anyone come out with the SG data field for a scratch golfer as opposed to PGA Tour Pro?

I would assume it would be an easy modification to the spreadsheet by simply changing the data field and everything else would be the same. I just haven’t been able to find the data.

Driver: Ping G400 Max w/ Ping Alta CB 55 Stiff (44.5")

Fairway: Ping G410 SFT 3W w/ Ping Alta CB 65 Stiff

Hybrids: Titleist 818 H1 3H/4H w/ Aldila Rogue Black 85 Stiff

Irons: Ping i210 5i-UW w/ Nippon Modus 3 Tour 105 Stiff (+0.5"/1.5* upright)

Wedges: Ping Glide Stealth 2.0 54 SS / 58 ES w/ Ping AWT 2.0 Wedge Flex

Putter: Taylormade Spider X Navy (35")

Also found this thread about 5 years too late. So I guess Golfmetrics is the way to go? The fee doesn't seem to be too bad.

If you're willing to do a subscription app, I think Golfmetrics is a good option. I've subscribed to it for a year at a time twice and then done one-month subscriptions several times.

One nice thing about it is you can see all the stats even when the subscription is lapsed. The subscription is only required for entering new rounds.

So once I had a nice baseline of a hundred or so rounds entered, I can go back once or twice a year with a one-month sub and enter another dozen rounds. Just to check in and see if anything about my game has changed (Spoiler: It hasn't).

Just started using Golfmetrics. Nice to hear your data remains if you let your subscription lapse, that was something I was curious about.
