What's the longest iron you play a 3/4 shot with?

Recommended Posts

I was messin around with a 4 iron at range other day, holy cow it was nice hitting at my range again, and it feels like it only wants to be hit with a full shot inorder to get up in the air.

For you coaches and fancy players what's the longest club you play/teach to hit a buttery 3/4 type shot with or do you do it with all the irons wherever its needed?

I'm thinking a 7 iron for me but then if the wind is in your face might be a longer iron... butt the chances of catching it clean goes down when you get cute with it

Can't figure how to like my own posts

Yep, my first hole in one was a 3/4 smooth and low trajectory 5 iron 160 yards into a cool little Saturday morning spring breeze!!

I had people for a couple of weeks I would run into ask if the radio station and the course Facebook page got that right and giving me a hard time, lol.

More club and taking off spin works all through the bag for certain situations, IMO. (Also, practicing 5 irons 150 is really good practice).

Yeah, same here. If the shot calls for that trajectory and release, I do it with a 4i anytime.

@juststeve said it best, depends on situation. So many variables in the game of golf. I've hit 3/4 fairway woods to keep it low and carry a hazard.

I think there's a different feeling between hitting a full long-iron that's flighted a little down versus hitting a 3/4 shot with a mid-iron. So I can understand what @Barfolomew is talking about.
If I start to get cute with a 3i or 4i it's easy to have that little 3/4 shot turn into either an ugly punch if I get on top of it or a hooking curve-ball if I let my lower body quit too early. Both are easy mistakes to make!
So I'd probably say I keep the 3/4 feeling for the 6-Pw.
If someone is attempting to land their approach short of the green then they're obviously playing a course that's relatively flat, dry and possibly baked out. You won't find much of that in the Southern US.

Every club in the bag. Knocks about 20 yards off the distance and lowers the flight of the golf ball. Little bit more roll unless I play it back in the stance to get more spin. I call it my 2/3 swing. I try to play the same shape as my full swing. Mainly it is my wedges through 8i that get the most use, for gaping purposes, but I also use the shot in the wind with my other clubs.

6 iron, it's my longest iron

Back when I could play I'd even punch two irons

I love me some knock downs or punches or whatever the kids (or Phil) call them nowadays

... My only Eagle came on a par 4 came when I hit my 2 iron from 180 into a 25 mph wind using a 3/4 swing to keep it very low. Told my son I was gonna land it 10 yds short of the green and roll it on, then did exactly that and it went in. My favorite local muni is a links style, wide open and usually very windy track so 3/4 shots are a necessity with every iron.
