Metro Detroit Area Golfers (NO COVID-19, POLITICS)

Recommended Posts

My golf league was rained out today, but a few of us are going to play Pine Trace Thursday to make up for it. Apparently it's mandatory carts before 5 pm for pace of play concerns. I'm calling bullsh!t and showing up with my pushcart. I guarantee I will play faster walking than my hack buddies will riding in a cart!

Ya not the biggest fan of Greystone. I like playing it once a year but dont need it to be any part of the rotation. 16-18 are decent but not best finish, Haha. 17 fairway slope is terrible. And 18 tee is blind-ish. Love the approach to 18, but dumb green.

17 at Greystone is not a good design and certainly not part of the 3 best finishing holes in Michigan. I've blown myself up on 17 several times.

The best thing about Greystone in my opinion is that the greens are usually very smooth and quick. They are similar to The Orchards. I like Greystone, but it's a course I'll only play once or twice a season. If I'm going that way, I'd just rather play The Orchards.

The great thing about Metro is we do have a ridiculous number of good courses.

Farmington Hills city course is in nice condition. The greens are fairly smooth and consistent, but they are not as quick as they usually are. Farmington, as a general rule, has greens that are relatively quick. Hopefully this will improve. They have the raised cups, which I do not care for. That said, I smacked one with a chip from 40 feet and the group gave me the birdie (which was absurd). Quick round too at just 5 minutes over 4 hours.

Crystal Lake is pretty good shape too. The greens are in nice condition, but they are not as fast as usual. Their green speed is usually average quickness, so they are currently just a little bit slower than usual. The course is actually fairly dry and very green. Crystal has the ball lifters shown in pictures a few days ago. This system rocks and every course should convert to this system. Real putting and no contact with the cup or flag. Brilliant!

As for me, my first two rounds of the year back to back and wow, I'm getting old and worn out. I can't ever remember being this much of a mess after just 36 holes of golf. I want a refund!

The cup up ruins golf for me. It's just a fancy game of croquet. I'm not a fan, and I stick to courses that allow the ball to drop with pool foam or something in the cup. So over the top, imo.

I’m sure this has been covered elsewhere on this forum, but just need to vent about GolfNow. (If there is a better place to do so please let me know). I understand courses have had to improvise with contactless and prepayment etc.. I’ve tried to avoid booking through them at all costs in the past but it seems harder than ever to do so now. I just wish there was another option for courses, but they have bought up all the competition that leaves courses in a tough spot to choose between the audience golfnow provides and a more customer friendly experience.

It is just frustrating when you call a course if you want to adjust your tee time days in advance and they say sorry can’t help call golfnow. So you call golf now and there is no way to talked to a person and they just direct you to the golfnow app even if you booked through the course website which is teeitup.com aka golfnow. Next thing you know you are out $10 in convenience fees that they take from you even though you were proactive and tried to adjust your tee time days in advance.

How do you guys deal with golfnow or any tricks to avoiding using it?

I'd have to agree that the word 'best' is quite an overstatement, the word 'unique' may be more accurate. I was just wondering what everybody else thought, not necessarily that I thought they were the best. I do find them quite a bit of a challenge and likewise have oftentimes made a mess of my score with those three holes. I did play the last three holes -2 on a particular round, but that is extremely rare. I actually enjoy the challenge of the par-3 and number 18, but number 17 is a bit gimmicky for my liking. We usually get out there two to three times a year.

79 at Pine Trace. I was hitting the ball really well but that course is just tough for me to score on.

77 at Sharf. Another good ballstriking day, but I didn't get my first birdie putt to drop until the 18th hole. My two buddies who I played with stopped by after and we enjoyed cigars and bourbon on the back patio. Overall a really fun day.

74 at Boulder Pointe. I played amazing almost all day but I choked a little near the end. I bogeyed 16 from the middle of the fairway, three-jacked 17 and missed an 8 foot birdie putt on 18. Still a really fun day playing with my wife and another couple we're close friends with.

Taking the next two days off and then starting our first week of league on Tuesday.

I played Greystone today, first round of the year, and it took a while to brush the rust off. It appeared that the greens had been aerated a week or two ago and still had the remnants of the procedure. Regardless, for some reason, I never putt very well on that course. The greens were quite slow probably because of the recent rain. The course was probably in its typical condition you'll find it normally throughout the year. While some might not enjoy the course, most of the people I talked to really enjoy its layout. By the way, I parred the best three finishing holes in golf to finish with a mediocre 87.

Yes, I had a round scheduled two weeks ago but got rained out, and last week we scheduled another round but I had to back out because I developed a tear and the retina of my right eye. I got laser surgery done this past Thursday and finally got out today Wednesday. I lost a bit of vision in my right eye in the process of it all and really just thankful to be out on the course today.

The range at Lyon Oaks will be open starting this Wednesday (which is good, because my long irons are really sucking right now!). Lyon Oaks is in pretty nice condition. The greens are very true and in good shape. They are quick enough, but just a little below their normal speed.

Played 18 in 2 hours and 58 minutes today, but Mondays always seem to play quick.
