Alright obviously I dont have any idea what Im doing here--I plan on being in Myrtle Beach this weekend and am looking for a game on Sunday the 24th of May. Anyone need a 4th--I was thinking of playing Caldonia--any input would be appreciated--thanks--CW

I will be in town Saturday and could golf Sunday. Heard Caledonia was not in the best of shape right now. With a cost of 159 - 167 I would expect peak conditions.

A myrtle beach golf group I am a member of said the conditions are the best about a week ago. Said greens were a bit bumpy. Last time I played the course it was in great shape.

I’ll be down in Myrtle next month. Sounds like calendonia is the must play. I have time for one more round. True blue and dunes seem to be mentioned a bunch to. Any recommendations for second round?

Cal is a must play. True Blue is next door and will have a replay rate if you want to play 36 holes one day.

 

The Dunes is private, so you will have to go through a MB golf packager. It's a traditional style.

 

True Blue is a modern Mike Stranz design, which is somewhat like a Pete Dye course.

 

In the summer, ask about green aeration in MB.

 

Some other top courses are: Barefoot, Tidewater, Kings North, Grande Dunes, TPC, Heritage.

Dunes Club is closed in June for non members so you can scratch that one. We are going next week to play Caledonia, True Blue, King’s North, Tidewater and The Dye Club. Grand Dunes and TPC would have been next on our list if we were staying for another day. In June nearly every course is aerating so just call in advance and that will help you narrow your choices down.

I suggest True Blue, TPC, Prestwick, Kings North and Tidewater. Then you have Barefoot Dye, Grand Dunes and Long Bay. You wont go wrong with these options.

I’ve played Caledonia and true blue quite a few times. I think Caledonia is more scenic but true blue was just an awesome design and really just fun to play. Not sure what shape it is in now but it’s a fun course.

Already made the trip and played a course that I played back in the 70's in the Carolinas Open--Pine Lakes International--it was cheap, close to our hotel, and I thought it was a nice course--maybe not on the level of the Strantz courses but it was fun and a pretty good challenge. Thanks for all the input.

Pine Lakes is a nice course. Played it before the redesign and after. After is much better. Not a Strantz fan so no endorsement here for either of those courses. Good to excellent golf courses can be had in MB for way less cost then those two. Pine Lakes is one of them. If you get another opportunity, try Prestwick. You will like that one also and it is a Pete Dye and son design.

Unlike Tobacco Road, You don’t have to be a Strantz fan to enjoy TB and Caledonia.

Going down in early August - playing Caledonia, Dunes Club & Heritage Club. Pumped to finally play Caledonia, and TB is getting punched that week so we picked Dunes Club instead. Very excited

Good choices. Dunes is a nice upgrade over True Blue. Heritage is tough over the last few years as they get a ton of play and rounds can be excruciatingly slow. It's one of the best courses in MB though so worth playing it once if you've never been.

Like the other Legends courses, you also get breakfast, lunch, and 2 drink coupons for that price as well - plus the food is actually quite good. Eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits/gravy usually for breakfast and a full menu of sandwiches, burgers, etc for lunch. It's a steal.

The only Strantz courses that I haven't played are Tot Hill in NC and the one next to Pebble in Carmel, CA. Not a fan. Ever hear the saying "all flash, no cash". To me, that is Strantz. Tot Hill has boulders on the course. Not my cup of tea. The ones in MB are way overpriced for the product they deliver. A ton of people disagree, Strantz was named designer of the year by either Golf Digest or Golf Magazine some years ago, I forget.

Cal doesn't have a range, just chipping + putting. If you want to hit balls, stop at True Blue first.

The Dunes has a full range.

At Heritage, the range is away from the clubhouse. If you want to hit balls, get there early because it takes time to shuttle around.

Hotels, stores and attractions are open. Restaurants are operating with outside dining and reduced seating inside. Courses are open and busy. Most courses operated with one player to a cart, no bunker rakes, pool noodles in the cup. Recently courses are returning to 2 players per cart. Unfortunately there has been a significant increase in covid cases in both Horry County and all South Carolina. Lots of folks aren't paying much attention to masks and social distancing suggestions. Hopefully things will stabalize.

Playing Caledonia for first time in a couple of weeks with the first tee off I believe. So are you suggesting that if I want to hit balls and warm up, I should first drive to True Blue which I believe is near bye use there range then go over to Caledonia and check in?

 

Is it about a 5 or 10 minute drive from True Blue to Caledonia?

Caledonia does not have a range. It has a solid short game area though. It would be a 5 minute drive.

Caledonia and True Blue are sister courses. Cal only has a chipping area and putting green, not enough space for a range.

If you turn at the Cal/TB sign on 17, you will pass by True Blue. If you must hit balls, stop in TB and show you have a Cal tee time.

I think you can do it with the TB bag drop, since they usually have bags of balls at the bag drop. It takes extra time, but that is how you can

hit balls before Cal. It's then about 4-5 minutes to Cal. The Cal entrance is slow going, but attractive.

 

Since they are sister courses, you can get a good replay rate on either Cal or TB, 9 or 18 holes. Ask in the pro shop at Cal for either course.

I did that both time i played Cal recently, stop at TB guys at bag drop asked where i was playing told them and got a bag of balls. Then picked up and drove over to TB, bag drop guys even called over for me both times to let them know i am here hitting balls. So when i arrived they were expecting me, thought it was a nice touch. Then i did my short game there and was ready to play at CAL.

Any Idea what time True Blue range is open? I ask because I believe my tee time is around 7:30am at Caledonia so can I get to True Blue at 6:30am and hit balls.
