Confessions of an Iron Cover User

Recommended Posts

My new Titleist 620's are super sweet, soft and purr-tee... Got them last Oct and they already have minor blemishes from banging about in the bag. NO, I won't circum to head covers to keep my tools from slowly attaining a used look. I don't have covers for all the tools in my garage either.

However, my buddy has iron head covers on clubs that don't cost nearly as much as mine. He's anal about everything. No, I don't care except when he leaves one somewhere on the course and goes short-term nutso trying to find it. That's the only time iron head covers annoy me.

See I whole heartedly dont agree with this. The phone analogy is hard because although Apple pours millions into the design aesthetics of their new phones, people primarily buy them for the functionality. The people that appreciate the design don't use a case.

Now in your case, you spend thousands on Miura blades, unquestionably the sexiest of all, not for performance but rather for looks primarily (lets be honest if we bought clubs for performance we'd all be buying P790s, MMCs and T100s), and rather than get to look at them in the bag, they remain hideously out of site by the covers. You could be rocking a maxfli box set in there for all we know.

What you have done sir, is put granny panties on a super model.

Maybe not for you, but for me, design/esthetics goes hand in hand with performance especially in golf. I've done many fittings and no matter how much technology and forgiveness is built into a golf club, if I don't like the look of it, it doesn't perform well. I buy Miuras for the look AND functionality and I buy my iPhones for the same reason. Oh and I put the thinnest clear case on them ;).

Perhaps a discussion for another day/forum, but many would actually argue iPhones are purchased primarily for the look and "status" it gives. iPhones are mostly behind on technology and specs vs other phone manufacturers released at the same time.

If granny panties are what keeps models looking young and great at their jobs, then I'd be ok with them wearing it :P

Just out of curiosity, do you also keep head covers off your driver and putter all the time as well?

I put a phone cover on my phone for the exact same reason I put a grip on my golf shafts. They slip out of my hands otherwise. My skin tends to be relatively dry and and not very grippy. The metallic cases are the absolute worst for this.

OTOH, I don't hold my clubs by the heads, so covers are not required there.

That last sentence is an easy yes- because there’s paint on my woods/hybrids and it will chip.

I play old Mizuno irons and love the character they have, but I’m not 100% sure I would like to ding up new irons...but I would never use iron covers, the look of a player’s bag with pretty, old school blades and cavity backs is just too cool!

Yes for both. But mainly because my driver and putter headcover game is phenomenal and they need to be seen. My studio stainless is honestly the only thing i would worry about chatter with since i plan on being buried with that thing in 60 years.

My Mp18s look like worn battle axes and i love it. Adds character.

I use iron covers 90% of the time. I travel for work quite a bit and my clubs come with me. While they are in the travel bag, they have covers on them. Additionally any time they go in the trunk, they have covers on them. I also use iron covers when I walk as the clanging drives me nuts, really the only time I don’t have covers on is while riding in carts as I lose them all the time when riding and using them.

My sister in law’s husband uses iron covers, but, he has OCD, takes him 20 minutes to get ready, tee’s in cart tee holes, balls in ball holder, 2 gloves folded in passenger cubby hole, and of course iron covers, which he does not take off the club until he is ready to take stroke, takes practice swing WITH cover on, THEN takes cover off.

my brother in law and I can actually BOTH take our shots before he takes his,,,,,

OK maybe I don’t hate covers but what they remind me off.

Iron covers are a MUST for a club HO like me, so after a few months I can move them and they will be in MINT condition for sale!

Otherwise I would not used them, but for me it is a MUST as it increases the resale value.

....Now anybody want some MINT condition........ fill in the blank irons?

Yeah - if you're actively flipping (buying/reselling) clubs because that's a hobby, I can see wanting to keep things pristine because that directly affects your bottom line.

I'll admit, in all the decades I've played golf, and 90% of the time it's with strangers as I most often sign up as a single, I think I've noticed others using iron covers less than a dozen times. Maybe less. Just not very common around here. I will say that I had one memorable experience where one player forgot a cover left on the fairway of previous holes and we had to wait while he went back to retrieve them. Twice. At that point, it went from I don't care one iota what you do with your equipment, to you just became an annoyance to my own game. I hope/trust that is the 1 in 100,000 outlier.

I have timed it with my buddy on the course... it's a 7 second process to locate your head cover get it onto the iron and get the iron in the bag. That's three extra minutes on the course and if you multiply it by four players then we're talking 12 minutes added to the round.

@anythingfinite that's a scary thought. If your supermodel was anything other than a blowup doll, she wouldn't be seen with you and your pocket protector. LOL Keep trying though...
