Mizuno JPX Line

Recommended Posts

I was able to order JPX 919 Forged through my club for $106 per, looks like I got a great deal. Ordered 5-9 irons, 1° flat, DG 120 S300. Could not pass up the price...not that I needed anymore iron sets.

But here is the thing, my friend, the new JPX line is coming out soonish. The next MP line is probably nearing completion on R & D already. I'm guessing here. The point is, the next new new might not be all that it's cracked out to be. Different weighting. Different styling. Sole width. Weighting. Materials... These things all change but, a 34º 7 Iron JPX 919 Tour and MP20 with the same shaft, at the same swing speed, at the same strike point, with the same ball, in the exact same conditions will basically do the same exact thing. So why wait? Unless you just want the next newest, shiniest toy and I can totally dig that argument.

I’m longing for my JPX 900’s right now. Me and the old lady were lucky enough to buy a place in Florida in March. We sent the car down here with my (backup/now Florida) sticks in the back seat. I made some mistakes. I went with:

5-GW in Adams XTD irons,

Wilson Staff Utility 21*

Callaway Jaws 54* & 60*

SIM Max 3w and 5w

Srixon 785 Driver

my biggest mistake was the Adams irons instead of the JPX 900 T’s, which are sitting in my basement up north. That will have to change soon.

I really like these irons - the 919F fit my skill level. But as others have stated, a possible issue is the sole grind/bounce - or it could be me working on my swing at the range - but it's puzzling. Slightly fats or digs seem punishing. Even though my stock shot is a very slight draw, I need to feel as if I'm cutting (even though I am not). I notice this a lot more on the range than the course. On the course, where I might have one iron shot a hole, I do not notice it as much. I'm goiing to ask my instructor duriing my next lesson.

Played my first round with the 919 forged this morning. I am currently playing MP20 SEL. Really nothing bad to say about the 919s. Nice high ball flight, very forgiving across the face, laughs at thin shots. Course was a bit wet, turf interaction seems good. Will try them again this week.

Yes, they are very good in the dry, though, which are the conditions in whch I play most of the time. You've got to be more precise in moist soil

Anecdotal I know but two weeks ago I went in fully thinking I would pick up a set of Hot Metal Pro's or Forged (saving some cash). I got a shaft optimized via the swing optimizer and tried three heads (including the HMB) and there weren't any noticeable differences so I picked the one I liked the look of. None of the specs changed from head to head (Mizuno is sensitive to that) so I would feel confident that no matter the head chosen they should be a quality fit.

I love Mizuno. I want to play Mizuno irons. I just can't though due to the bounce. I have tried too many sets only to always come to the same conclusion, they just don't work for my steep swing. The best Mizunos I ever tried in helping with this were the JPX 900 Forged. I could play those for the most part but they weren't as solid for my swing as Pings. Ultimately when the 919 Forged came out, I traded my 900s for them. Big mistake. Just never went back. I have thought about doing the VJ treatment and getting 3-PW in a set and bending them all 3-4 degrees weak 1/4" short. May solve my problems but it would be a expensive experiment.

Well, I need to shallow out my swing anyway ... lol. So, I will continue to work on shallowing ...

Another thing to consider is that Mizuno irons are very flat when compared to other OEMs. You’ll definitely want to get lie angles checked to see that it fits your swing.

I've found irons with higher bounce, pre-worn soles or v-soles work well for me. Just tried some Hogans and they were fantastic. Srixon work very well too. I've played Ping for a long time and they are my go to. I like to feel like I hit down on every shot. The JPX 900 Forged worked with my swing and not sure why the 919s didn't.

I would think you couldn’t go wrong with a hot metal or hot metal pro.

Wouldn't it be the Forged? They have similar head sizes, although they don't advertise it the 900s had a reinforced perimeter to boost ball speeds like a cupface would. Sure lofts are a bit weaker but I've found them to keep up pretty good in my testing. Don't get me wrong, love me some Hot Metal Pro, I just think the Forged might be a tad closer.

Just an update. I was texting with my rep yesterday. New release is postponed a month. Should see these in October sometime.

I have had the 900 forged since release and skipped the 919 forged because I didnt like the look...they had a thicker top line and looked bulky to me. I plan to get a new set of JPX forged when they come out and maybe sprinkle the Tours in until the 6 or 7 iron. I really really hope the forged look more like the 900 line. I have loved my 900s and have waited 4 years for new irons. I want to be amazed by this new JPX line!!!
