The One Club Making Skill I Don't Know!

So even with all my club making experience and knowledge, there is one aspect of club making that still leaves me stumbling in the darkness, How the heck to get the backing layer off of double sided tape?? I probably spend as much time trying to peel that backing off as I spend doing the rest of the gripping process and it drives me up a wall. Now I know I can buy a double sided tape dispenser and I realize that may be the only real solution, but I don't really want to take up more work bench surface space with it.

So I am looking for an epiphany, for someone to come to the rescue with an ingenious or maybe ridiculously simple solution. And NO, I don't want to hear about compressed air! Leave those comments for someone else.

What tape are you using?

When I put it on the shaft there is usually a corner that ends up being just exposed enough to pick up and get the rest of it off.

The dispensers are not that big. And worth the money. And it works flawlessly. I don’t remember where I got mine but I didn’t pay this much. I just go tired of cutting and peeling the tape.

One tip for that dispenser. If you don't want to mount it to your bench glue a non-slip silicone pad to the bottom of it. I like to be able to move mine around.

I press down one side of the tape onto the shaft and then work with the corner that's pressed down on the club head side. Since this is the underside of the shaft, I kind of press against the corner with the pad of my fingertip while pulling back near the corner with my fingernail (of the same finger). That quickly separates the backing layer and then I can remove it.

It's hard to describe, but it's quick and effective since you're essentially sliding the backing layer off the tape, which is stuck to the shaft.

Haha! I agree that this is an aggravating annoyance. I commiserate with you my friend. As a novice club maker, I won’t be getting a tape dispenser soon. But that seems like the most reasonable solution.

Try tearing the tape instead of cutting it. If you do it you will see what I mean.

press a corner against itself, then use your fingernail to peel off the backing

I’ve been there. Once you get it separated, cut the tape only with scissors to length when regripping and leave the backing a couple of inches longer than the actual tape on the role. The next grip you simple unroll and press the tape to the shaft and the extra inches of backing overhang allows you to pull it right off. Every time you cut a strip of tape leave the backing longer than the remaining tape on the roll and you’ll never struggle to separate the tape from the backing again.

Use a "Q-tip" (ear cleaning rod with cotton) dipped in Grip solvent, and ad a drop in the corner of the tape....let it work a few sec...now its easy to split them.

Lots of good ideas here I am going to try out and see what works. I know I can always just get the $80 grip dispenser need be, but it's the principal of it. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Adam ~~~~ Once you've cut the strip to your desired length stick one corner on your thumbnail and scrape the top sheet back a bit with your other thumbnail.

I just bend one corner and peel from that corner

Instead of a fingernail, a razer blade in a box cutter makes separation a lot easier.

Fold a corner onto itself on the butt end where you have extra anyway that you’re going to cover the shaft butt with. Then just use a finger nail to quickly separate and peel down.

No problem. I never had much of an issue as most rolls I’ve used pull right off. However, the current roll I have seems gummier and I understand the OP’s frustration!
