You dont see it often today because it does not do much if anything to COG and ball flight, and on Mack Daddy mentioned above it a visual & design detail.

Porting is done today still and is used for swingweighting, especially on overlength builds.

I still do it for swightweigthing purposes. I’ve got a senior golfer who likes his wedges in the D1-D2 range.

I just did this to my 50* GW for swing weight purposes. Took the wedge down from D5.5 to D2.5. Wedge feels much better to me and is in line with me wedge swing weight progression.

 Our system of four weight ports and milled aluminum medallions allows us to position the head’s CG progressively upward as loft increases for solid feel on every shot.

 

So with all due respect, not just for aesthetics.

Ask this question.....how much weight is removed on this Callaway heads, and how much does that move COG.?

When we hosel drill a wedge by 11 grams who is close to the max, we move COG 2 mm heel side and 0.5 mm higher, and we cant remove that much weight by porting, so its way easier to get COG where we want it to be by shaping the head (grinding from blanks, for OEMs that means a small design difference from loft to loft).

Carbon steel is 7.9 grams pr ccm3, Aluminium is 2.7, net difference is 5.2 grams ccm3

For a 8 mm drill, we removes 10 grams if we drill 1 inch deep, so thats 1/4 deep on each drill hole, but we cant plug it with aluminium then

The effect is minimal, even if we are able to measure it

 

EDIT: its about 5 years ago since i grinded the last wedges, so ive become rusty on the details, but did the numbers for 2 heads - a 52* vs a 60* when we want VCOG to have the same actual height above ground. (VCOG goes lower with loft)

Measured the way we measure VCOG, we need a movement from the 52* to the 60* of 4.69 mm UP on the 60* before they have VCOG on the same height above ground (in address position where the 52* has 52*loft and the 60* has 60* loft)

Ive use the norm for a 60* wedge that has a VCOG at 7/8" above the leading edge (90* position or face down on a pin). The 52* should then have a VCOG of 11/16* or 0.69 inch measured at 90*

We are NOT able to make such a movement in VCOG by porting, we want even come close to that, so we have to do other adjustments to make this happen, so when Callaway claims this is done to adjust VCOG, they are stretching the facts, we are at the best making a "fine tuning", since 10 grams removal here moves VCOG with less than 2.0 mm and we need 4.69. Since they plug the holes with aluminium, movement of VCOG becomes even less.

I prefer reverse porting on wedges .. ie lead tape
