Shaft Tip Size Review

I have a shaft tip hosel bore gauge and it measures six tip sizes, and to date I have only come across three of them: .335", .355"T, and .370". There are three sizes I have yet to come across: .350", .390" and .410". Who uses these obscure tip sizes? Furthermore, are there some even more rare tip sizes I am not aware about? Wilson Fat Shafts don't count as we do not consider doomed equipment here.

Many driver and fairway wood shafts in the past were available with a .350 tip. Really wan't an obscure tip size and is still around. Old TM bubble shafts had a .405 tip. There are numerous examples of other shaft tip sizes if you really want to look into them. Srixon Z355 irons had a .362 shaft tip as did one of their recent driving irons (Z U65).

I don't like the new equipment, so that is why I have yet to come across a .350" tip.

The .350 tips are generally from older equipment. Never said it was from new gear.

Both 0.395 and .405 were used by TM in the bubble era.

.350 was the common driver/wood hosel size for most for most of the major OEM's up until the adjustable hosel was introduced. Increasing the top size from .335 to .350 was one way to reduce the cost of the graphite shaft construction for high volume production of stock shafts.

Even after TM introduced the adjustable hosel, they still continued to use .350 for stock shafts until about the R15 release. .335 shaft were generally only for custom upgrades or TP releases.

Callaway and Ping seemed to transition from .350 to .335 for stock shafts a bit earlier - around 2012. They made the decision to produce adapters for only the .335 tip size, unlike TM who produced adapters for both tip sizes.
