Ping G Irons vs Ping I Irons

this is an old post, but relevant for me. I am considering going to i210 7-iron to PW, and G410 6-iron. At 67, 6-iron is probably going to be the longest iron in my bag.

Coming from Titleist AP1 (712) 6 and 7-irons, AP2 (714) 8 to PW.

I have a set of 210s and the 4,5,6 irons are incredible easy to hit. I can not see the point of trying to combo set them.

I have owned multiple sets of Ping I series irons (i3, I20s, i25, i200, i210) and have owned the g25 and g410. I have always been like warm about the i series, but absolutely loved the Gs. To put it in perspective, I am a forged iron snob and have played Forged MBs for the better part of 15 years (716mbs currently).

I always assumed I would love the i-series, which would seem to offer me the best of both worlds in terms of playability and forgiveness. Despite my preference for players irons, though, I always found the G series to feel and play better. And, the additional forgiveness they provide does actually show up on the score card, which is something I never found true with the I-series in comparison to the irons I typically played.

All of this is to say that I would recommend at least considering the g410s through the bag. They are a joy to play. I even loved the specialty wedges (gap and sand).

Knowing me, I will probably end up with both G410 and i210 6-Pw. The most important thing will be the shafts. DG S300 is out of the question. At 67, I am looking at AWT regular, or XP 95 R300. Or maybe something else. I have played the Titleist /Nippon 105T (regular) for years, and it works for me because it is somewhat heavy (108 grams in R), and is soft in the tip.

On the other hand, when I was fit for that shaft, I was 59. At 67, I might need a different shaft. The stock graphite shaft in the G410? XP 95 or 105? There is only one person who can answer this question: ME!

Going to a Ping fitting center is probably out of the question. I got fit years ago at Titleist Manchester Lane. But the drivers that they fit me (on two separate occasions) were not as effective as my tried and true Ping G25. That driver might not have the numbers of the other drivers, but it has worked consistently over a number of years. Lucky me. (And I mean lucky, I got the unicorn.)

You are correct that only you can answer the shaft choice question. That said, don't sleep on the AWT. I have played KBS Tour 130x for years, and am currently playing Modus 120x in a set of Titleist 716MBs. My g410s had AWT Regular and I LOVED them all the way up to the 5 iron. The 4 was loose, for sure, but they were very playable through the rest of the shaft. I'd almost go so far as to call them the "every man's" option. I genuinely loved playing them, and could have been very happy with the set if I could've found a little stiffer shaft for the 4 iron.

Currently I have two i210 7-irons, one with AWT and one with XP 95. I'll keep hitting balls and play with one or the other until I decide which shaft to go with.
