Weekend Golf Trip to North Carolina Mountains

Looking at doing a couples trip to the mountains of North Carolina to escape quarantine in June. Ideally we'd get an AirBnb somewhere in the mountains to hang out/grill/hike ect....We would want to get in at least one round of golf. Quick research came up with a ton of very nice but very private courses.

Any advice on memorable courses that non members can get on and or possibly stay and play golf resorts in that area? Asheville, Boone, any cool spot in the mountains with a nice course that we could get on.

The Grove Park has a course and the rates are discounted if you stay there. It’s convenient since it’s on property and there’s a spa there too.

Stay away. Don't bring your cooties to Western North Carolina. Come see us in 2023 when we and you have received the vaccine.

Not sure what you're looking at in terms of a budget but I'm a big fan of the Grandfather Mountain/Banner Elk area. It's not cheap but you could check out staying at the Eseeola Lodge and playing Linville Golf Club, which is a good Donald Ross track. Hound Ears isn't far away from that area (near Boone) and allows some public play. Decent course - not that long or tough but usually in good shape.

Further south toward Asheville, you have Mount Mitchell, which is a good public course that also offers some stay-and-play options. Further north, Jefferson Landing would be another one that might be worth checking out. Pretty solid course that has accommodations on site, but it's not as scenic as the others mentioned.

Pre Covid19 - some of the rentals @ Grandfather Mountain CC would gain you access(not inexpensive). A few of the other higher end clubs also have similar set ups (Highlands CC)

Lodge is closed and no guest play at Linville until at least July

Check out Waynesville. Waynesville CC, Laurel Ridge, Springdale and my favorite Maggie Valley CC. All within about 10 mins from downtown Waynesville.

Could you give me a little more info on Maggie Valley? Have played at Waynesville Inn and had a good time. Accommodations look dated at Maggie Valley - would you suggest just the golf or to stay as well? I don't know where else to stay in the area - would prefer to bring the wives and stay at somewhere like the Swag but think it is just too pricey at the moment.

Maggie Valley is very nice!! Nice upscale lodging if you search a little. You can scoot over the mountain to the west and play Notah Begays course in Cherokee. Stop and play the slots at the casino on your way home. Very nice area and if you are into hiking or fly fishing, that much the better. Gatlinburg, TN is not that far of a drive through the Smokies.

Linville Falls

Mt. Mitchell Golf Course

Grassy Creek Golf Course

Mt. Mitchell and it’s not even close. Mtn. Glen in Newland is 10 minutes from Linville and to me is better than anything on your list except Mt. Mitchell.

Two things about Mt Mitchell: 1) It's likely to be cart-path-only, and 2) the pro shop may still sell baggies of kibble to feed the obese trout in the Toe River which winds through the course.
