Hey guys, I have some friends that live in chicago. I thought about making a road trip from michigan later this year, swinging through chicago to pick up the boys and head to cog hill. Is it worth the drive? I dont hear people talking about it much.

It’s been a couple years since I played it, but I would definitely recommend it. It really puts a priority on driving the ball because if you go left or right in the rough, it will penalize you as it is thick, or at least was. If you go in the bunkers, they penalize you as well because they are deep and green will probably not hold a shot coming from them. And the greens were in great shape with some nice Rall on them . So my vote is yes!

It's a nice course, especially if you are making a trip and want a course with some name recognition. Some people play it and love it, others play it and come away saying they don't understand the appeal. I like the course, but I'm of the mindset that if you didn't tell me it used to host a PGA Tour event on the regular, I wouldn't have guessed. That said there are many other courses in the area that are good as well, at much better values.

Played it 4 years ago or so. Really enjoyed it. Very penal if you miss the green. Tough, thick lies, awkward stances. We also played it from 7400 yards or so.

I really like the layout and there are some nice elevation changes at Dubs.

Conditioning can unfortunately be hit or miss, and for a relatively high price point public course, that can be a bummer.

I try to play it 3 or 4 times a year. I love it. I haven't had much issue with conditioning ever, maybe I've been lucky. But it is definitely worth it. The other 3 courses there are garbage and not worth playing, so if you were thinking play playing 36 or something don't waste your time and money on those!

How do the other courses there compare to Ruffled Feathers? I've only ever driven by Cog, and never realized it was so closed to RF.

From a layout and design point of view, none of the other three courses at Cog Hill measure up to Dub's.

I don't like Feathers. I would rather play Cog #2. But, I know that take is likely an outlier.

Dubsdread is definitely a tour caliber course. You will be hard pressed to find another public course in Chicagoland which presents the challenge and scale of Dubs. I don't know the current rack rate, but I was out there last Friday playing the #2 course, and I noticed Dubs was available at $116, which seemed very reasonable.

I'd play RF over the other 3 ten times out of ten. I wouldn't play the other courses at Cog for free.

I played Cog regularly for close to 30 years and now due to life changes I have become a sub with my old Sunday group. The one thing I have noticed is that the conditioning of all 4 courses is not what it once was. The last time I played Dubs was about 3 years ago and I said to my group we payed $155 for this? The conditioning was spotty, many un-raked bunkers, pitch marks on greens etc. The greens were not what you'd expect from a $155 golf course. My group consists of 11 to 22 handicaps and for us the course is brutally hard since the redesign, and we played it from about 6300. I have talked with many IPGA members and they all have said that Dubs is one of the two or three toughest tracks in Chicagoland, and that includes Butler, Rich Harvest and Medinah 3. And these are good players talking. Would I recommend Dubs to someone who has never played it and wants to play a former Tour course? Yes. Would I want to play it regularly? No. If you're up for 36 holes of challenging golf also play Big Run when you're out that way.

I think Dubs is certainly worth a visit, but the value is iffy given the price tag. The last time I played it the conditioning was excellent, but the time before that it was very spotty, e.g. liners coming out of some bunkers. It's definitely a challenge if you're not hitting it straight. I find the course very scoreable, but you have to stay out of the bunkers and rough.

The #1 and #3 courses can easily be skipped. #2 has some great holes, but conditions always seem to be crummy. It's quite wet. That said, it's generally half the price of Dubs. I've talked with a few players who'd rather play #2 than Dubs, but I don't fall into that camp. Personally, I'd hit Big Run before the other CH courses, or Ruffled Feathers. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, I'd recommend driving 20 minutes to Mistwood.

I played Dubs this past Saturday and I thought it was in great shape. Greens were firm but rolled a little slow. This is a course that will penalize you from the rough and sand. If you are in the sand a lot it will be a long day. The bunkers are DEEP! I'm a 9 handicap and found it to be tough but not crazy hard. That said I was hitting the ball really well and shot an 83 from the blues, which I think is around 6700 yards. The par 3s are long from back there. I played with a member so I played of a discounted rate of $87. The course is worth around $100 maybe a touch more. I would not pay north of $150 for a round there, but I would recommend it.

The green complexes make the course. They are awesome. What don't you like about them?

I like the greens, but for me it's the bunkering that makes the course. There are few holes where you stand on the teebox and not think/worry about the potential for trouble. For example, you simply do not want to be in the sand on the 18th. The two front bunkers on the par 3 13th are tough. The two left fairway bunkers on the 15th are a real treat.
