Removed TS3 driver weight, added lead tape

I removed the standard TS3 driver weight (~10g) and added 10 strips of 1/2"x2" 5mil lead tape (~10g) centered right behind the face. This is basically taking 5% of the mass and moving it forward about 75mm. So I think that means cg is moving forward about 3.75mm (5% of 75mm). Im just experimenting trying to bring spin down a little more. Rough guess based on my golf spy 2019 driver cg and moi https://Not allowed because of spam.com/2019-driver-center-of-gravity-and-moi-report/ I think this will pretty much change the cg similar to the cobra F9 with weight in forward position. I also shortened the driver length to 44.5 (-1") because I was sick of choking up. Realistically I can add another 10g of tape to get the SW back up but I don't want to do that before I try this current setup. If I end up putting another 10g of lead tape right behind the face I would imagine that would really change things.

 

I guess I'm just wondering peoples opinion, if anyone has ever done anything similar, or wondered about this.

The primary aspects of moving weight that can effect the spin come from how the c.g. location and MOI will influence the gear effect.

1) lower the MOI about the horizontal axis - which will increase the amount of gear effect for off center hits. But this will only lower spin IF the impact is high on the face. If it's low on the face, it can actually increase the spin. If it's dead center in line with the c.g. - there should be little change in spin.

2) Moving the c.g. forward can actually reduce the gear effect (reduces the radius of the virtual "gear"). This is the opposite to the MOI effect. In the case of a driver, this reduction probably isn't going to be significant since the radius is already quite large compared to other clubs and the MOI changes will likely dominate between these two aspects.

3) Lowering the c.g. (not moving it forward). If the c.g. moves lower and the impact stays the same, then the spin will be a bit lower. But while that movement probably did move that 3 mm forward, it likely only lowered it by less than 1/2 mm. So I doubt you'll see much from this aspect of the weight movement.

4) It will also lower the MOI about the horizontal axis - which can lead to a higher degree of horizontal gear effect - which can lead to a bigger dispersion and inaccuracy (more variations in side spin due to gear effect).

So what will happen (in theory) will strongly depend on your face impact location and consistency. Which is why diagnosing spin problems - especially on a driver - always should start with checking face impact location and tendencies.

And that's ignoring the posibiltiy that the weight movement can potentially alter the feel of the club - which can potentially effect your swing and delivery into impact. So the bottom line is that the only way to find out what will happen - is give it a try.

 

Oh, and finally, you shouldn't need to worry about swing weight when changing from choking up to cutting down to the same playing length you were choking up to.
