Beware: Huge influx of fake Miura irons on eBay (especially MC-501)

Recommended Posts

All,

Over the last few weeks, I have noticed a bunch of auctions for counterfeit Miura MC-501 irons listed. It started out with some black and satin finish heads, shipped directly from China. Now, I have seen almost a half dozen sellers (some new, some with used) listing fake MC-501s, some with obvious fake component builds, others actually put together decently. Some of the fakes are awfully good, but I think the surest way to tell is the large amount of camber found on the fakes. Other than that, it is tough to tell from photos (although the FORGED stamp/mark on hosel looks pretty bad on a few of the copies).

I will try and post some pics, just figured I would finally post this up with a few more listings from different sellers coming out within the day. Heads-up.

All, I just see that 2nd Swing has put up a set of obviously fake Miura MC-501s on their website. I have already emailed them to let them know, they said they are looking into it. I just don't want a member here to get caught with a set of $1000+ counterfeit irons. They have some great shots of the back and front of the clubs, it is a good opportunity to see on of the prevalent fakes. Notice the sharp lines on back, faked texture on the cutouts in the back and the excessive toe-heel camber as can be seen in relation from the sole to the bottom groove of the clubs.

Here is the link that had them:https://www.2ndswing.com/pv-1353248025-miura-mc-501-raw-iron-set-5-pw-mitsubishi-rayon-oti-75-graphite-stiff-right-handed-3775in.aspx

Hi,

Can anyone help say if these are fake?  I hit them and feel seems authentic, but I am not an expert.  For me what seems off is the MC-501 seems scrunched together and a slight different etching.  The club numbers seem to have a different font, and even the Miura logo seems to have thinner lines and a taller font.  Especially the “A” at the end.  I will link pictures here, seems you can’t upload a Foto.

I posted this in another thread here and a mizuno rep stated these aren’t fakes.  I had the same concern.  I was told they moved production to China in the last year.  I was waiting to see another new set to compare, but they are hard to come by here in Germany.  Miura makes another set with the font style of the numbers this way.  Hitting them it seems impossible they are fakes.  Sound and feel are spot on, which isn’t easy to copy.  But, I would love to confirmation from Miura as to why the difference in the number font/angle.

I have them and can post shot data, but I don’t have something to compare them with when I get a chance in a few weeks. I traded my old set of CB-301s for them plus some cash. I hit them just as good, if not better than my 301s.  I didn’t think it would be dumb question to ask based on the photos, especially regarding the differences with the numbers and MC-501 Logos.  Miuras Website doesn’t have extensive photos, and the ones they do show a difference in the font.  I uploaded more on a the other Thread here.

Intersting topic. I just bought what is my "dream" set of MC-501 in Black Boron and now I am totally worried. From everything I can see they look like the real deal? Can anyone chime in and help confirm if I am right?? I receive the clubs in a few days....

If they were professionally built then the seller should be able to provide a receipt showing who built them and cost.

I would want to see the numbering on the bottom, picture of writing on hosel, and a clear close of the back of the irons. Pictures of each individual face as well. The groove line counts are usually off on the fakes.

nothing initially raises a red flag… the camber under the bottom scoring line looks pretty straight.. which is good. Didn’t notice milling on the back..

ask for more pictures of hosel and soles.

Yes, I think those are legit.  Besides the sole numbers, please take note of the cavity features.  The fakes have very sharp lines, and you can see they aren't sandblasted in the recessed areas (at least not the same).  Miura does such an incredible job on finishing steps, I believe it is very obvious by just looking at the finish of the back side of the iron, let alone the sole.  Also, heads in plastic=fake.  I have also seen some with a very obviously not Miura "FORGED" writing on the hosel.
