Who chips with what?

It really depends on what the shot calls for, and what I'm trying to get the ball to do.

52° wedge - bump and run shot - carry it 25% of the total distance and let it run out

56° wedge - low/mid height shot - carry it 40-50% of the total distance and let it run out

60° wedge - low/high shot - carry it 60-70% of the total distance and let it run out, if I want to hit a real nippy low spinner I'll carry it closer to 70-85% of the way and play for the one hop stop shot. But I have to be on my game to hit that shot, with full commitment to generate that nippy spin.

Just messing around on the chipping green really helps though.

I chip with my 56* RTX 4 wedge, the 60* only if I need a lot of elevation. Very consistent, great feel, can flight it low or high with ease.

I find the faces on my Apex 19's to be too hot to persist with any bump and run shots on tight lies.

In the finest WRX fashion, it depends on which clubs I have in the bag.

Right now, Golden Rams are in my bag, which means my PW and 58 get the work, depending on how much run allowed or required. For something longer than is normal (my course has a couple moderately large greens), I'll pull out the 9i.

When I have my MP37s in play, it's my GW and the 58, with the PW getting the long distance duty. Same clubs, different sole stamping.

The lofts might change slightly here and there, due to how I have my sets lofted. It's primarily 47-52-58, though there's some 48-52-58, 51-58 and 49-53-58 in there, as well. Small adjustments.

60* and sometimes 56* for me, depending on lie. I some times play with one of the playing pro/instructor here and he uses an 8 or a 7 iron. I asked him his opinion if I should be doing the same and he said "100% definitely do not! The 8 and 7 iron works for me and clearly the 56* and 60* work for you. Some people use a hybrid!"

Usually I'll pick up my 60* because when I miss the green I'm usually pin high to one side or the other, unless greens are really fast (I'll aim for the front of the green yardage. For the last couple of years I've been lasering all of my chip shots and I'll us the 60* upto 25 yds, 56* from 25 -35, rarely will I use a 52* these days (greens are usually too dried out and fast). For me, it also depends on the lie, wether I can get spin on it or roll it out of the deep stuff. Having confidence in your club and being committed to the shot is a big help!

60 degree every chip, unless I’m on a hill and it’s going to turn into a 90 degree, then I might drop down. But I subscribe to the “same wedge” approach as well. I feel like I get way more consistent with it by using it always. I don’t like guessing the runout, I like knowing exactly what to expect.

If I am in the fringe or even a couple feet into the 1st cut, I like to choke down on a hybrid and take a putting stroke. Took a little practice at first to see how hot the ball was off the face to then gauge roll out, but it works great. Just enough loft to lift it off the ground and get over the fringe to get it rolling on the green.

I use my 60 degree wedge probably 90% of the time for chipping. For me, the one club method works much better than the "Rule of 12" sort of method. I just like knowing that, whenever I'm chipping the ball with my 60 degree, I'm basically just trying to land the ball about halfway to the hole. It should run out the rest of the way, but obviously that depends on the lie and how much the ball will check up. For a fairway chip, I'm going to get more of a stop with the chip, so I try to carry it longer. From the rough, a little pop up that lands halfway to the hole and rolls out works perfectly.

That's interesting, what loft hybrid do you use? I have a chipper I purchased about 5 years ago and tried that but I had a hard time controlling the distance with it. Of course with more practice I could probably become proficient. What I didn't like about it also was that it takes a spot out of my bag that I could use something else with. I would imagine a hybrid gets through the grass decently and probably only take a very short backswing with it.

Mostly my 56 and 60. But on occasion I'll use an iron. Generally have better luck with the 7iron for a bump and run without hitting it to hard.

For me, I chip and pitch using every wedge in my bag. If it's a higher pitch, I'll use a 60. If I need runout or need to climb a ridge, it's 56 or 52. If it's a short sided chip (in semi rough, with 3 yards of green to work with) I'll splice open a 60. Flop shots variable, 56 or 60, depending on roll factors. I use everything for different shots, for me it's versatility over stock shots.

Use the clubs with which you practice around the greens. I primarily use the 53 and 58, and occasionally the 48 for a very long roll.

I don't practice around the greens with the 8 or 9i, so I won't use them on the course unless I go to Bandon or some other links course. And then I'll practice before I go.

Stan Utley uses a 58 for almost everything around the green. He can hit any shot with it. I once did that but prefer to use the 53, too.

I would say the vast majority of my chips are with my 54* (granted it's like quite delofted) unless it's a shot where I need it a bit shorter and softer landing. I think I'm a decent reader of the greens, so want to treat most of those shots like a putt and get the ball on the ground rolling. Too many times I get cute and fly the ball a bit too far with my 58* and put it past the hole.

I use my 58 on most shots but if it is a long green and I need more roll I use my 54. I have tried the method using a lower lofted club but I always hit it too long. I just dont practice enough with that method. When I am just off the green I take a 58 and use my putting stroke. The loft of wedge cause ball to pop up nice and roll softly towards hole without too much distance. A chip shot can be executed with most any club you just have to be comfortable with it and it has to be repeatable.

Adding more love for the hybrid chip. If you're on the fringe up to a few feet off the green it's just so easy. Play it like a putt and I find it's pretty uncommon to not give yourself a chance to make the next putt.

I try to use the lowest lofted club I can to get the ball on the green rolling with the shortest swing possible as for me, that gives the most consistent results. I only use a 60 when absolutely necessary (which isn't often). I have friends that use only the 58 for all shots inside 95 or so. That seems great in theory but in my experience very few are able to manipulate the face and ball position to consistently hit the right shot at the right time with a consistent result. My one friend is one of those lucky few. Almost everyone one else is less consistent unless they are very good, consistent players. If willing to put in a LOT of time to master that, great. Most sadly don't and can't.

My advice is do what gives YOU the most confidence.
