Golfers in Austin, TX

Hi All, We're planning a trip to Austin on the first week of March. Wondering what's the best public course options? where should we stay? How's the weather? We're definitely going to enjoy the food. The bar scene is not a priority but definitely checking it out. We'll probably want to save all our energy for golf. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

Best public is the Barton Creek courses but you need to stay at the Omni.

Best public if you are not at the Omni: Falconhead, Wolfdancer, Avery Ranch I would say.

If you are willing to venture a bit to the hill country, you can add The Bandit, Vaaler Creek, Horseshoe Bay (3 courses).

Bonus course that I personally think is underloved is Delaware Springs

What's the deal on Horseshoe? Do you have to stay at their resort to play the courses. I don't a see the ability to book anything directly on their website.

I agree that Delaware is underrated. I assume that all has to do with the location and cheap price, so it doesn't look like a destination to any one not in the know.

To play Horseshoe Bay you either have to be a member or stay at the hotel. Delaware if a great course and i recommend it as well. Another fun one is Lighthouse in Kingsland. When i played it last summer the green were as good as Horseshoe and for about $30.

Mike, there is a course a little north of Austin called Star Ranch that is a solid track. Pretty wide open but in great shape, nice greens and I believe they offer free replays during the week. It’s a good tune up track if you are coming from up north and haven’t played in a bit. Free range balls too. Other recommendations are spot on.

Choosing between Lighthouse CC and Legends out in Kingsland for an upcoming round. Does anyone have some feedback on which course they prefer, or recently played? I've played Delaware several times, so looking to checkout a different course in that area.

Lighthouse is very country/laid back atmosphere but the greens were fantastic and it was only like $30 for a morning round.

Agreed. I really enjoyed the course. I thought it was a great layout. The smaller greens, combined with the wind we had yesterday made for some challenging holes.

All the above courses are observing appropriate measures. I’m playing as much golf as if before although my practice is down to putting on my putting mat in the house as all the Sun City courses are closed till 4/20.

In case you missed it the SC communicator email that came out on 4/17, according to Jim Romine, he said the courses can’t open until the Stay at Home order is released on 4/30. In an earlier email a couple weeks ago he said the Sun City courses wouldn’t open until at least 5/4. Who knows....???

What the heck happened at Morris Williams? The greens are complete garbage at the moment and pretty much unplayable. I played there a month or two back and they weren't great, but were OK. After a few weeks of limited play they somehow got much worse. This is obviously a theme over the last few years as they seem to die every spring. Since it's a city course, probably not much hope for improvement even though there are spending money on the practice green.

Morris Williams Greens have undergone a core aerification with heavy topdressing. Fees will be discounted to the evening rate upon checkin.

They had not done that yet when I played the course a week ago. What I played on was not normal airation and top dressing. They were mostly just dead.

With the huge new practice green going in at mo willy I hope they will make some progress on all the greens. It would be a huge waste if the new practice green ends up as bad as the old one and equally disappointing if the practice green is nice and the ones on the course continue to suck.

I played clay earlier this week, and though the greens were super slow, at least they had grass and rolled smooth. I’d take that any day over the last several months of mo willy.

Has anyone been out Delaware Springs in Burent recently? Also, what about the two courses in Kingsland, Legends and Lighthouse.

We just had a tourney at Legends on 6/7, and it was in great shape. So good in fact, our league just scheduled another tourney there on 6/20.

Forest Creek is in incredible shape. It has become one of the go to's since the reno for sure

Played Ram Rock and Apple Rock out at Horseshoe Bay over the weekend. Both pretty good shape and greens were nice despite the heat.

I'm coming down late December til early Jan. Staying w my buddy that lives near Lions so I'll probably play there but I'm looking for some other suggestions too. My buddy is going to be working a little so let me know if any of you want to get a round in
