Thought I made a hole-in-one. Made Double.

Luckily we're able to play golf in Cincinnati while we wait out the pandemic. unfortunately the golf gods were not kind to me the other day at Indian Ridge Golf Course. We had a group of guys playing a little money game with closest to the pin on the Par 3's. We get to the 17th hole of the day and it's a nice 150 yard par 3 with a little wind behind us. I had not been playing particularly well but all it takes is one nice shot to win a par 3 proximity and you can walk away with a nice little bit of pocket change. I made the mistake of saying to my buddy before even putting the ball on the tee that this was the perfect yardage for my 9 iron and he could just pay me now if he wanted. he proceeded to make a joke about how I hadn't even sniffed a greenie all day and why would it start now? Feeling a little extra motivation to hit one close and stick the knife in his side I took a deep breath and made a beautiful swing. I looked up to see my ball flying right at the flag, I mean this thing was on a string and heading RIGHT for the flag. Again, I curse myself by audibly saying "go in baby!" only to see my ball fly into the hole on a fly, hit the PVC pipe they installed that keeps the ball above the lip line and fly over the green by about 60 yards. this ball bounced like it hit cart path, bounced down a hill and ran out of sight. I literally couldn't believe my eyes. We walked up on the green to see part of the cup destroyed then proceeded to walk over to the back side of the green where two guys on the 14th hole were waiting for me by their carts. Thats when they told me that they saw a ball that bounced across their green while they were putting an ran into the lake on the side of the green. So in a deflated manner I thanked them, turned around to grab a ball from my bag, took a drop, pitched back onto the green and two putted for a double bogey.

To make things even worse at the end of the round my blind draw partner made a bogey on that hole giving us a best ball 4 on the easiest hole on the course. If we had taken just a par on that hole we would have won the back 9 but instead we lost in a scorecard playoff.

Screw you golf gods! See you tomorrow!

LOL....that sucks dude. Not sure when the next time i'll play golf is!

I have a funny almost HIO story too. I was playing in a skins game a few years back where the top prize was a few hundred bucks (nothing major but still). There was a par 3 with a hole where it was blind due to the slope away from us, so you couldn't see anything within say 10 feet of the cup. Me and another guy in the group BOTH hit one into the blind spot (what made this more remarkable was this hole was 230yds, so two great shots).

Anyway, we get up there and there is only one ball visible about 6 inches from the cup. The other one in the hole. Mine was not the one in the hole. LOL

I birdied a 230yd par 3 and didn't make a skin! And missed out on the HIO

I genuinely still don't know how to process this shot. Could it have stayed in the hole without the PVC Pipe? Maybe. Could it have still bounced out of hole without it? Also maybe.

Sounds like you hit the pipe flush on as opposed to on the side. That's a serious what if. If pipe not there most likely either goes in and stays in or rattles around and drops close by. Yeah sometimes the Golf Gods are very unkind. Just ask that Caddyshack guy.

So with the current rules as stated, and I am not sure where they are stated. It is considered a hole out when your ball touches the pvc so in my opinion, that would be a hole in one. Am I correct? I know its not your traditional hole in one but since we are posting scores even with the PVC or the slightly depressed hole, the scores can be posted.

I guess maybe you can then say I made a HIO but to be honest it feels a little cheap. It’s not like this ball was rolling and hit the pvc. This ball hit it on the fly. It could have had the exact same results without the pvc.

Honestly I’m not even upset giving up the hole in one. It would have been my 2nd one ever but instead I get to tell the fun story about how covid golf robbed me.

A few yrs back: I've never had a hole in one. My closest came on a 140 yd. par three. The ball on the fly flew into the hole. It gouged out the edge of the hole, hit the bottom of the flag stick and bounce back towards me into the pond that was in front on the green, I took a drop in front of the pond then preceeded to hit a 60 yd shot over the pond and roll it into the hole.

I played last Friday with foam in the cups. I chipped one from about 40 yds. On the fly it hit perfect on the stick and the foam where the foam had been cut to put it around the flagstick. The ball split the foam and wedged against the stick and foam. We all started laughing about it. The people on the deck at the house behind the hole all started cheering great shot. I was surprised it stuck.

MACKEPA at my home course the owner put in foam tube from the pool tubes in the cups so not to get a hard bounce like that, might have saved your butt with those in there instead of PVC.

At my last club, I played in a group of about 32 or so multiple times a week, our 12th hole is roughly 210 yards slightly downhill to a penninsula green with water on three sides. Birdie on this hole has won a skin every round we've ever played, except for one. Two groups apart on the hole playing 210 to a back pin on that day we had two different guys make a hole in one. So you would think no skins, right? Well one of the guys got a stroke on that hole and won a net skin with a 0.

Luckily for both our club has a 5 dollar a person group you get in for hole in one protection. If you make a hole in one everyone in the "club" gets billed 5 bucks and it is credited to the person with the hole in one to help pay for the drinks they have to buy that day. Since each of them had a hole in one, both received 5 dollars from every person in the "club", however people there that day didn't drink double their normal amount on them so they each came out with a little extra money.

We were at Tour 18 in Dallas few years back, get to Sawgrass 17 hole, pin on far right side just over the bunker. High handicapper in our group, put 3 in a row in the drink, his 4th ball goes in....a hole in 7!
