Beginner Golf Journey

Hi Everyone,

This is my first time writing on any forum.

Took about 3 lessons 15 years ago and was never interested in golf but was force to pick it up by my dad and played like less then 10 times. Recently for the last 6 months i started golfing again and got hooked to it. Been going to the range at least 4 times a week and play 1-2 times a week on the course. Only problem is i still suck at it. My scores are around 105-110. On certain days i just can never swing the clubs. My friends i play with are all single handicap and i feel way left behind playing with them. My question is how can i get better at golf since i have the time to do so? i have no distance as well and suffer from inconsistency. my 7 iron only hits 125 meters and driver only goes 180 meter carry. certain days i feel so down just from golf. makes me so frustrated and just want to quit but each day i wake up thinking i can improve my swing and get better. How long does is take to get decent at golf that it is enjoyable? Sorry for my rant. just had to let it out.

Per the USGA - What is the average golf score? An average golf score is 90 strokes for every 18 holes played. This score applies to an amateur golfer playing on a par 72 course. A good golf score is a maximum of 108 strokes, while a bad score is considered to be 120 strokes or higher.

So if you’re already playing at around 105, that’s really fairly typical.

Take lessons. You practice in order to ingrain, or groove your swing mechanics. If you have faults in your mechanics, all you’ve doing with a heavy practice load is making them more difficult to correct in the future. Your instructor can also check to see if your clubs are appropriate for you.

Playing with people who are somewhat better than you is a good thing. Your pace of play will be better, and you will naturally mimic their play to some extent. Playing with people who are much better than you, and particularly those who hit the ball much farther than you isn’t such a good thing. At best they will make you feel incompetent and induce you to try to hit the ball further (rather than focusing on technique), which again is often disastrous to your play.

While most players tend to improve at a more rapid rate in the first few years, becoming truly skilled takes time as well as effort. Most of the successful players got that way because they enjoy the journey. Savor the little victories and have fun out there.

Get the book entitled Understanding the Golf Swing by Manuel de la Torre. It teaches an easy to learn swing philosophy appropriate for beginners.

You WILL get better, however getting there requires time and patience. Work hard on you short game, because you don't need to be young or athletic to develop one and as amateurs we don't tend to hit a lot of greens to begin with, so a good short game can be a real stroke saver.

Golfing is like taking a Bob Ross TV course in painting. Obviously if it came natural we wouldn’t need Bob to show us how to add a happy rock or a foamy waterfall. The first time you try it, you screw up perspective and the whole thing looks like a blob.
