Best Rain gear

chbrake

Recommended Posts

I've spent $300 on one pair of GG pants - and then in the fall I spent $29 on a Sunice 10k/10k pullover. I have no problem paying up for high end rain gear.

But I also play a lot of club tournament rounds - B team, mens league, trophy events - that I dont always get the luxury of staying home if it really rains. Same with golf trips.

Anyone else think the Zero Restriction jackets fit extremely short? I bought an XL short sleeve, and I don't have a particularly long torso. The jacket barely reached the top of my pant-line. Had to send it back. Got a full Adidas Climastorm suit, it's great. Haven't tested in the light rain I bought it for, but the fit, comfort and style are second to none IMO.

To anyone from this thread that's sent me a message, and it looks like I have a LOT of them to catch up on, I'm sorry. I don't come on this site much anymore (just don't enjoy it since the format change), but will check in more often. I'll reply to them all ASAP, and feel free to continue to ask questions/advice.

@chris975d Thank you for all of your helpful pointers. Per this thread and the MyGolfSpy rankings, I recently bought Cross Edge gear (jacket and pants are both medium). However, the sleeves are too short and the waist on the pants is too loose.
For reference, I’m 6-0 and 165 with long limbs. My pants are all Adidas Ultimate365 Classic in 30/34 as are all of my shorts.
I think I’m going to try the ProQuip PX6 next. Can you (or anyone) make a size recommendation? My initial thought is a medium jacket (I can live with a little extra room in the torso as long as the sleeves are the proper length) and small/33 inseam pants (rain pants will break more cleanly over my shoes so I don’t think they’ll appear shorter than my Adidas pants).
If anyone is looking for a NWT Cross Edge set (medium black), send me a PM.

Still looking to pickup a good bombproof short sleeve, preferably GoreTex or similar - definitely not black.

Picked up a Sunice Sullivan for $29 last fall, its great but could use something thats going to be a tiny bit warmer.

FYI, I was able to place an order for ProQuip PX6 gear at Golf Support. As recently as two days ago, all of their stuff appeared as unavailable to the U.S. Hopefully it won't get kicked back but thought I should mention in case anyone is interested.

Pays to invest in the best. Back in late 90's I bought Zero WhisperSoft GoreTex Tour Jacket, matching Tour Pants and two Zero Goretex golf cap and bucket hat. Today they still look like new and are kept in my car. I wear the jacket when I go to the mountains too. Works great in the snow. Been out in pouring down rain wearing the gear and bucket hat playing golf. I actually enjoy playing in the rain more than wind, only I deal with wind far more often.

I live in Portland, OR and have been debating what kind of waterproofs to get. I like Galvin Green but some of the jackets are a little too flashy for me. I'm thinking about picking up a Pro 3L but just heard about the Gemini. I'm thinking that's the way I need to go. How's it holding up? Have you had to take it out in any decent rain?

GG was a bit to flashy for me too (sound like my dad). Vest is holding up great. Bought the vest for the mixed weather in the middle west. Ended up buying the jacket too. It is fantastic. I have had it out in the rain and it was excellent. All my comments about the vest hold true with the jacket. I think the jacket will replace my traditional wind jacket / layer that I utilize in the winter.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone in the thread. It took some time to go thru it, but if you are needing some new rain gear it is certainly worth the Time.

I had a zero restriction suit that is over 10 years old that the top has gotten too tight on me.

ordered the ProQuip PX6 based on everything I read here. Seemed like the best value of the nicer gear.

haven’t used proquip but the PING Zero Gravity recommended by Chris was fantastic. It is very lightweight, waterproof and the full suit fits up into the ball pocket with no wrinkling. Legitimately 10-20% the size of footjoy when stored in the bag

Haven't posted in this thread much but just to follow up that this jacket worked out really well this summer. Its definitely waterproof enough (I think its 20k rated) but IMO its also definitely a summer jacket. For $29, I have zero complaints.

For $29 you got a steal.  Glad it worked out.  I have a couple Sunice pieces and am happy with them.  Only odd thing is the zipper is reversed. Must be a European thing.

I know, it was a totally random find at Sierra Trading Post. I was just goggling for more information on a jacket they were selling in our pro shop and it popped up. One of those deals I think where they only have one size and one color available - thankfully it was a large red LOL.

I wanted to follow up in case anyone reading is concerned about ordering something from the UK. Ordered Sat, shipped Monday and received today. That’s faster than I can get anything from in the US right now.

sizing on the Proquip definitely seems more in line with US sizing. I was a little worried about it being too snug on me and it fits perfect. I ordered the same size I would in a shirt from Adidas.

Don’t want to start a new thread....

Best rain pants with TWO back pockets? I played in the rain today. My Nike pants only have 1 back pocket and my FJ rain pants also only have one back pocket?

Any pants with two pockets? Or, just one pocket but on the left side? I need a pocket for my scorecard holder.

Thanks!!

best rain pants aren't golf brand pants.  Arc'teryx is the easy answer

Agreed, though Arc'teryx is complete overkill. But something like the Zeta SL Rain Pants would be perfect for any activity.

As I read this thread you'd think some people are playing in a jungle during monsoon season 🙂

My opinion is that Waterproof membranes have come so far over the years that it's no longer necessary to spend a lot to get a decent golf rainsuit to stay dry.

Good point..  it depends on the level of waterproof  you need..  but ive played bandon in torrential downpour with wind blowing 40+ and been bone dry and warm in my arc'teryx gear (admitted mountaineering and snowboarding are my main sports) while playing partners are soaked through in their "golf brand" rain gear 🙂

So if its a light drizzle anything will work..  if its sustained rain all day id rather pay for the best and be comfortable all day..  my 2 cents..

Cheers!
