My Experience Ordering From Byron Morgan

I have recently had a serious case of putter fever. I was seriously considering purchasing a Scotty circle T but just couldn’t justify spending that kind of cash. After I talked myself off the ledge, I decided I was going to design and order from Byron Morgan.

 

This is my third Byron but the first two were used so this is the first that I designed and ordered. My first was a 612 Welded Long Neck which was sold a few years back. I still have the second which is a DH89 Long Neck.

 

I kicked around a few ideas and the final design was sent on 2/19 and I sent my 50% deposit on 2/21. I was told the putter would take about 6 weeks and guess what was sitting on my porch today slightly over 2 weeks after sending my deposit? This beauty!

 

As you can tell, he nailed my design to a T. This putter is a thing of beauty. I couldn’t be happier. The headcover is awesome and I love the Pure grip. Now, time to go roll some putts in the garage.

Wow, what a beauty! I have a 620 that should be arriving next week. It'll be my first Byron I can't wait!

I decided to send the putter back to Byron for an oil can finish. I just don't think my OCD will be able to keep up with the raw carbon. He received the putter on 3/27 and I still do not have it back. It took less than 3 weeks to receive the putter from order to delivery and I am now going on week 8 for just the oil can.

 

This is the 2nd time that I have sent a putter to him for "refinement." Neither experience has been very pleasant.

What program or form did you use to detail what you wanted? Is that a form Byron sent you?

There is a template on the website and I just used an editing program on my computer. It was a lot of fun going through the design process.

Oil can isn’t a finish done in the shop. He outsources it. So you’re at the mercy of the place he sends the putter to. And given the whole covid thing, who knows what capacity shops like that are currently operating at.

Yeah, that's what I was told. They are waiting for a batch to go out for oil can so they probably get a better price if they send 10 at a time or something.

I had a similar wait for copper plating a few years back. Waiting stinks. It’s still worth it though. That’s going to look great. What color will all the dots be then?

I asked for an off white paint fill. It should look amazing when its done.

Did you ever get it back?

It shipped yesterday and I should have it by Thursday. Byron posted a picture of it on his instagram but the quality isn't great. I will be sure to post them once I receive it.

It sure does. I originally requested white paint fill but I think the black looks good.

You may find the oil can difficult as well. In my Anser F thread is a picture of my one off satin oil can finish Wilson 8813. Its an out of town putter bent grass and poa only. From that angle you can't see the finish coming off in places. The Ivory is well suited for Oil Can Finishes yours should look good.

If putter butter worked as well as it is advertised my irons and carbon steel putters would have raw or oil can type finishes. They don't so draw your own conclusion and I live in desert.

My latest putter project a Titleist Tour Model Offset will have a BOS Golf Aquamarine finish. Putter Butter will help extend the life of the finish. Which is good thing but it isn't a be all and end all. Fortunately it no longer has acetone in it so your paint fill is safe.

Does Byron Morgan do in-person fittings for custom orders? Obviously not right now, but once this whole COVID thing clears up.

Thinking about doing a totally custom putter in the next year or so and since I live in LA would be easy to get down there sometime if that is something they do (would love to do a proper fitting as well as see all the different heads/finishes/etc. in person).

I am not 100% sure but he might be in Georgia now. At least, the putter shipped from Georgia.

Interesting, had never heard anything about that. Maybe that was the third-party doing the Oil Can finish?

Yeah I think he outsources the Oil Can finish.

And yes, he has relocated to Georgia.

Oh yeah. I remember Byron’s OC is very dark.

That looks awesome with the new finish. What type of maintenance is required for that? Will it patina over time?

Just like any "raw carbon" putter, you need to keep it oiled. It's inevitable that it will patina some. For me, it's just about keeping it at a minimum.

It looks great now and will look even cooler with a little patina. Roll it well!
