Course Record: 63 or 61

Recommended Posts

As far as I’ve ever been aware the definition of a course record is men playing from the championship (or ladies playing from ladies championship tees) tees and putting out every green.

The six ball in question included 3 D1 collegiate golfers and a group-cumulative handicap of +3. Those kids don’t play from the whites, and they have been preparing for our City Amateur Championship which is currently underway with the final round .

That's looser than ours. I'm sure a lot of clubs in New Zealand only recognize a course record in a strokeplay event, like the monthly medal or club champs. So basically it has to be on a Saturday and off the championship tee (which our monthly medal normally is). I've no doubt about the player's ability. But it's like a lot of things in golf, your low round needs to be attested by a marker, played by the rules etc, same with hole in ones, have to be attested by your marker, played eighteen holes and be off the normal ish tee block (IE, they haven't put the markers two blocks forward for example).

be off the normal ish tee block (IE, they haven't put the markers two blocks forward for example).

What about all those US Opens and other PGA events where they move the tees up on a par 4 to make it drivable? Once the overall yardage is in the right range it shouldn't matter what the yardage of any single hole is.

That's what I'm saying, most courses can maintain their rating if they move a tee forward, and another back. What I'm saying is we recently had some work done in front of the usual tee markers (staff working all day) so they had all off the tees on the forward tee (of five), so the hole went from 160m to 90m (three blocks forward).

Maybe if our kid can continue to improve we’ll get a chance to see that. I’m not sure if he has aspirations of playing golf for a living. I don’t think he does but I could be wrong.

For me I think what pissed me off the most wasn’t that the pro did not want to accept the score of 61. It seemed like he went out of his way to not acknowledge the round in any way shape or form. In my opinion it was a rare moment to highlight the round, the golfer and our club. Our pro chose to do none of that.

Right. We’re really just a golf club we don’t have any other amenities so a round that deep under par... at least let the members know.

Good opinions already mentioned. On tour broadcasts, you often see a competitive course record and course record score listed. It only makes sense to have both.

Personal experience, I’ve twice broken the “course record” at different courses and told the pro about it (it’s happened another time but I kept it to myself; learned my lesson). Both times I got a “nice round, but it’s only that, a nice round”. Both times, they made it pretty clear they thought I was full of... If my name had more recognition, there’s no doubt they’d parade my name on their walls. I love Canada and our people, but the Canadian PGA is still littered with stuffed up d-bags who treat “average” golfers like garbage and tour pros like embarrassing fanboys.

Your pro wants to name drop that a PGA Tour player has the record at his club. I don’t know why, but so many pros at clubs love name dropping. It’s embarrassing and no one likes it.

Never heard of such a thing. 61 is the new record.

At my old club every time I would play with the head pro he would tap in a really short putt and say. " Gotta putt them all for the course record."

Is it up to the pro how a course record Mia recognized? Go over his head maybe.

Hope that kid end up winning on tour.... What will the pro say then?

Most courses I have seen have a course record and a tournament record. Pro's for some reason LOVE to have a touring pro or former touring pro to have the course record. My former pro was this way, but the difference is a touring pro held both at our club. Your pro sounds like a dick

My last course is COMPLETELY different when setup for a State amateur event(or club championship) versus a regular round. Not to mention the stress from a tournament round versus a regular round.

We have a tournament record of 65 and a course record of I think 63.

The Tournament record of 65 is FAR MORE IMPRESSIVE. Those greens stay rolling around 11 to 12 all year and for those big tournaments they get them up to almost 14. The rough is allowed to grow and the areas around the green that are run off areas into bad spots are kept shorter to penalize you more as well.

Having played well in a regular round and a round in a tournament it to me is at least four strokes tougher when you factor in the tournament and the difference in difficulty of the layout.

I´m really surprised to see how many people think non tournament rounds count as official records. Here in Iceland course records are only set in tournaments, never even knew this could be a debate. I think tournament record and course record is a good solution. But to be honest if I set a course record on in a tournament with a strong field, high rough, fast greens and sharp pins. I would be quite pissed to have my name taken down by somebody playing on a easy Tuesday with his friends it is just not the same sport.

Walking down 18th with your buddies and walking down 18th in a tournament going for the win is a very different feeling.

Everyone knows that for it to be an Official course record someone must be screaming MASHED POTATOES in your backswing. Hey guys, I don’t make the rules, I just enforce them. I guess you can call me a traditionalist

The official course record is what the club decides it to be. If it is any casual round or exclusively a competition round, it is up to the club to decide.

FWIW, any kind of 'official' score is not any score delivered by a group of sandbaggers but a score made under official circumstances. In my home club the official course records for standard competition tees are the ones made in competitions. However, there are also official course records for tees not used for competitions, such as ladies' back or front tee used by men or men's club or back tee used by women. A few years back my club arranged a special event with a few top players from our club to play from these tees just in order to make an official course record for those tees. Just to brag a little, my best score from ladies' back tee (-5) is better than the official course record made on that day (-4)

Furthermore, there are also limitations wrt preferred lies. In my country a score is not accepted as the official course record if there was preferred lies in effect. Some years back a guy shot -12 (60 strokes) but the LPC was in effect so the official course record for that club is 65.
