Back foot starts the transition... cool stuff

I had a Zoom lesson with Monte yesterday. We're working on further reducing my lateral slide in the downswing. Things are definitely improving, but he showed me a way to start the transition that I've honestly never heard about before. Seriously, I've been playing for close to two decades, and no one has ever told me about this. Those fellow swing nerds who follow Monte on Instagram have most likely seen this post. This rear leg is an action-reaction move that's very much rooted in other sports:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz_4i1e6ppMIt's a nice move (assuming you have other things in order that allow this and you're working similar issues), and works dynamically rather than statically-- which is to say, I don't have to isolate this move so much as integrate it into my swing. Worth a look, I think.

Here's slo-mo of me doing the drill. My apologies for the Zapruder quality of the footage, Monte filmed his iPad. You'll notice that my rear foot looks like it's pulling back late, but it isn't. I started on transition. Per the IG post, I did a 3/4 slow swing to keep from falling on my face.

Zoom lessons with Monte is great. Did one a while back and it was exactly what I was looking for. Just a couple of items that I need to work on and discussing feels, drills. It was only 30 mins but we’ll worth it. Haven’t tried this drill but I’ll give it try since I have EE issues :(

Like what this is saying, but what is the endgame for your swing in a playing situation once you've practiced this 'drill' over and over? What are you wanting to do with your right foot when you take a full swing on the course?

Great wedge drill. Guilty of wearing tennis shoes too often at the driving range anyway. Might as well put them to use.

I can’t find it but there was a pretty heated discussion about this foot action..dennis was part of the discussion.

Greg Norman had the most pronounced move that I can remember seeing and obviously Rory..both just happen to be the best drivers of the golf ball ever?

Wcdixon the end game is to hit it better. The foot isn't gonna move when you’re wearing shoes with grip. When I “pull” my trail foot back it starts a chain reaction of about 3-5 great things. Including banking, vertical push upwards, and not getting my hip or knee out ahead of my lead foot. This is what works for me. YMMV.

Footmashie-- let me clarify. Your foot will move eventually because it has to come off the ground at some point. But if I'm wearing golf shoes with some kind of grip and pressuring the ground, that foot will stay down until the pressure dissipates to the point where the foot has to move. But I take your point.

I’ve experimented with this before and for me this didn’t do anything for me personally. I bought sliders if amazon and practiced in my garage..didn’t do a darn thing for me.

It’s a move exhibited by the guys with the fastest hips that hit a straight ball or a draw. So I believe it’s the body’s reaction to keep the trail hip from trapping the right arm and/or perhaps cracking of the whip.

Coincidentally, after my last online lesson from the wizard I have been keeping my right hip back longer. Nothing seemed to stop it so I decided to start working on keeping my shoulders closed longer on the downswing the other night and wham.

The pressure of the right foot going backwards shouldn't be anything new because it simple physics and a direct reaction of the right leg rebounding off the ground to move the right knee forward before turning to the left leg. I think most golfers have experienced this playing in the rain. I once saw Darren Clark lose his footing with his right foot going completely back.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

 

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

Thaks for this and Monte’s explanation and drill... passed it on to the wife who has her right hip spin out towards the target line way too early and blocking speed and any kind of free swing....
