Jimmy Walker - Playing X100 Shafts in TS3 Driver/Fairway Woods @ Colonial

Everyone has a range in which they feel the most comfortable in terms of their mechanics. Go to either extreme and you stop gaining and start losing. We would also need to see what the actual club specs are in terms of total length and head weight. Lol, interesting logic. Everyone at the top of the sport for the last 15+ years has used composite driver shafts, and then one guy sees some success with steel and that means everyone else has been wrong this entire time.

Also what have we been told about graphite that is nonsense? That it is lighter and stronger? That a wider variety of bend profiles can be created with it?

Ah thank you, I just wonder what the actual head weights are. The swing weight suggests they might be fairly normal or even a little heavier, but I also don't know what the balance point on the X100 .335 shafts are. I suspect it is pretty low which would lead to a higher measured swing weight.

I currently game my old 983k X100 combo. I get a club that is a total weight about 50 grams heavier than a modern set up with out having to have a heavy swing weight. My other club is a Vapor Fly Pro with a 60g Hzrdus Yellow. Same swing weightbut 50g lighter in total.

 

I find the heavier is better for my tempo and consistency and don't see a noticeable depreciation in distance.

You are about correct. My 983k x100 combo is about 390g compared to my Vapor Fly Pro (with a few strips of lead tape) at 355g

Many of the supposed advantages of graphite have simply gone away. The original advantages were two-fold. First, the lighter weight allowed a driver to be made longer, supposedly increasing swing speed. Second, the softer flex profile allowed more forward bend at impact resulting in a face reorientation that reduced ball spin and addressed amateur slices. Now, however, we've discovered that longer isn't better. Many pros have gone back to shorter driver lengths, and they are using heavier shafts as a result. Sergio goes so far as to put a weight inside his driver shaft to increase its weight. Bend profiles got remarketed from being a problem to being an advantage. The shaft became the "engine" of the club, and the wide range of performance variables opened up the entire fitting industry. There was money to be made in graphite shaft markup and in fine tuning performance. We can control spin by selecting the appropriate ball.

As for Walker's experiment becoming a trend, it's not possible. Steel driver shafts are virtually unobtainable. We are now forced to use a product that used to cost $25 and now costs $250 and more, all for performance that's difficult to optimize and probably not that much of an advantage, at least not at driver lengths below 45".

BTW -- Tiger won his slam with X100 shafts, when most everyone else was using graphite.

Ive always thought it was hypocritical of people who thought keeping steel in the driver was a joke, but they didnt switch to graphite in the irons? I mean do what you want, but if it was sooooo amazing why isnt it in your irons lol

I would really like to see Walker regain some form though. Lyme disease stole a helluva lot from him it sounds like. The guy used to be right there in every conversation for a pretty big stretch, but he always been pretty weak off the tee stats wise, made up for with his short game and putter.

This is just not accurate. Avg driver length on tour these days is about 45.25". That's straight from Taylormades tour rep. Me personally, I don't play a driver that long but pro's will not be going back to steel. NEVER going to happen other than a few one off's like Walker. Graphite is superior in every way and the modern game is about distance. In fact I bet in the next 5-7years half the tour will be playing graphite in irons as well. This is one of the reasons companies like KBS and True Temper have gotten into the graphite business. They knows it's coming.

We’ve been hearing that the tour iron shafts would be mostly carbon or composite in the next 3-5 years for like 10-15 years. I’m really surprised they haven’t caught on more.

I've been hearing that for 20 years. Don't think it's going to happen at this point.

Actually I think the trend is the other direction. I wouldn't be surprised if more companies started coming out with steel/graphite hybrids like the Nippon GOST. They should even start to offer some fairway shafts like that. I would love to try a Nippon GOST fairway shaft that's 10-15 grams lighter than the hybrid.

Unless they start pushing the juniors to use graphite shafts, they're not going to all of a sudden switch to graphite when they are pro's and their game was developed around steel shafted irons.

When i say graphite I'm also referring to graphite/steel combo shafts like MMT and GHOST. The draw back for graphite was it's strength in woods. Lighter and stronger was great for woods but irons are much much heavier and heavier graphite means more and more layers which means lifeless rebar at anything over 110g's. With modern tech they can inlay other materials like steel so they get the best of both worlds without having to rely soley on the graphite layers to provide the weight. Tungsten is another thing they are using a lot, especially in wood shafts.

Recent pick up for me, its about my only option for a slant neck wide blade in lefty. Actually took the weights out as I like a lighter putter.

In simple terms, graphite allows the designer to change one characteristic without changing another. With steel you can't do that. If you listen to the golfwrx podcast "TG2" and the episode with Fujikura they go into detail on that answer and why graphite will take over.

thats really a bunch of meh.. sorry not buying it. Of course Fujikura thinks graphite is the future... ?‍♂️

Graphite has to overcome cost hurdles for one. Two, you have to artificially create more weight, which to me seems pointless as the number one benefit to graphite is being lighter weight. If there was THAT much of an advantage to graphite, it would be creeping into more pros bags, where costs dont matter. At best you create a heavy graphite product that performs *as good* as steel, not better, and maybe added benefit of vibration dampening.

Fair enough to be cynical of a graphite shaft company tipping (no pun intended...) graphite shafts as the future in irons.

But, the first part of what J13 is saying there is indisputable fact ("In simple terms, graphite allows the designer to change one characteristic without changing another. With steel you can't do that.")

Graphite and composites allow engineers to mess with things like wall thicknesses to manipulate EI profile, which they simply cannot do with steel.
