Best Looking and Feeling GI Iron?

PullHookBlock

Recommended Posts

For those of you who have access to lots of clubs to try (I live in BFE) what are your thoughts on full on GI irons that manage to look decent at address and sound/feel decent?

Really thinking of going to something more point and shoot that’s forgiving of thin and toe misses with some leading edge relief as well.

Try out a demo club from Sub70? I love the look of the 639s and have been enjoying the one I have (set will be ordered eventually)... The 699s are also good if you want some more distance. For $20, they will send you a demo club to try them out. They will fit you over the phone and are much more engaged than the larger companies... might be a perfect fit for you (Assuming you like the look of them).

Don't know where BFE is but I assume you have pretty much ZERO chance at trying clubs, yes ?

Given that, how good would any of our advice be given you're asking about totally subjective things ? Look ? Feel ? Sound ? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I like the feel of my Mavrik irons. But if money wasn’t tight would love the PXG XF.

I'd vote for G410. Really enjoying the feel of the past 5 years of Ping irons. Solid feel, meaningful forgiveness. Just a bit too much offset for my eye, but well within spec for a GI iron.

JPX919 Hot Metal Pro. Excellent and great pricing on them now w/ plenty of custom shaft options. With a SS of 87mph w/ a 6i you are in the stiff shaft category. Possibly even X-Stiff depending on other factors.

If you’re looking for more of a GI iron try the 739s from Sub 70. Those are their GI iron.. They are more forgiving than the 639 or 699. I bought a set last summer and have been very happy with them. This was also the best club buying experiences I’ve ever had. Jason the owner was fantastic to work with. I have some physical issues and Jason did a really did a great lob fitting me. I can’t wait until the budget allows for another purchase from them.

If you want a full size GI iron that both looks good and sounds/feels good then I'd check out the Mizuno Hot Metal. They are a little smaller than Ping G410's but they sound and feel better. They are low bounce so not the best if you dig trenches but otherwise they are fantastic clubs that can be played by a wide range of handicappers.

I play the HMB and find them plenty friendly but I previously used blades so I'm probably not a good reference. Try the 919 Forged and Hot Metal. Otherwise the P790, T300.

If you want to sacrifice your ego, I've played twice with Big Bertha irons as rentals & they're absurdly, hilariously fogriving. Literally anywhere on the face and it goes almost the same, but you can still turn them if you need to. Made me rethink a lifetime of club choices. If you get them in black they're not quite as ugly.

plain and simple.. the top 2 best game improvemnt irons ive ever felt... mizuno hot metal pro 919 and callaway steelhead xr pro... both feel outstanding and are very forgiving without looking bad or being bulky or too much offset. The mizuno hotmetal pro are probably more easy to get as they are from last year where the steelhead pro are from a few years ago. Dont let the pro in the names fool you these are game improvment irons i mentioned.

If you dont mind straying from the big name OEM's, get yourself a set of Maltby TE or DBM. They will feel/look better than anything mentioned above. Very easy to hit, very forgiving, and very straight. Also you can get an entire set for the price of 2-3 irons from any of the big names. Its a cheap experiment if you end up not liking them.

I picked up a set of the Bridgestone Tour B JGR HF2 irons earlier this year and love them. I have about the same swing speed as you. Got mine with Nippon NS PRO 950GH shafts in stiff flex, perfect feel and trajectory. And the cost was well below most major brands, $600 for 5-AW. Even the pro at the store said he couldn't understand why more people don't consider these........great looking and soft feel for a great price.

Not gonna lie. I had to look up BFE... guess that’s slang for middle of nowhere.

If your budget allows, I’d try PXG. I used to be a PXG hater, because I felt they were over-hyped and no way justified at their price point. But with their special pricing right now & used clubs going at decent prices, I was able to get a used 4-6 iron mini set of Gen 1 0311’s & a new 4-PW set of 0211’s. Haven’t yet hit the 0211’s but the 0311’s flat out perform!

I've been testing around and playing different GI clubs over the past few years and decided "best looking" really is two different questions: which looks least like a GI club but performs like one vs. which looks most confidence inspiring in a good package.

On the first question, I think it's pretty impossible to beat the look and performance of the Srixon z585. Really sleek top line, forged, clean looks. And all the help you'd need, provided your delivery works well with the v sole. The Mizuno JPX Hot Metal Pros are also great looking at address. And depending on your swing, you might get full GI performance from the JPX 919 Forged, which would be the best looking of the bunch, I think.

On the second question, i'd say the Ping G410 and JPX 919 Hot Metal both are good options. Good luck.

I play Srixon z355. thinner topline than sgi clubs, good feel, long, and great sole design for turf interaction. In case you want something more forgiving than the other Srixon mentioned here by others. Few years old now so sharp price.

How do the Mavrik compare to the original Epic sole wise?

Would it be worth it to try the 4 and 5 iron into my set?

While I LOVE the PP-9003, and actually just bought a set, they are NOT GI irons in any traditional sense.
