Handicaps 10 - 18 - What type of irons are you playing?

I'm currently playing to a 12.6 ...I'm playing with PXG 0211 irons with Mistubishi MMT 70 shaft...I love the feeling and the sound of this clubs and what a great deal for Military and First Responders

HCP 17 and I just went for a Mizuno MP20 combo set 4-6 HMB and 7-PW MB.

They are my first fitted set of irons that are replacing Cobra AMP forged (still keeping them in case the MP20's are too hard to play)..

 

And yes, my iron game is far better than my short game and drive!

15.4 as of this morning. Fitted for Miura CB 301 4-PW at the start of the 2019 season. had them built with blacked out KBS C-Taper 120 stiff shafts. Not saying its because of the irons, but I dropped my handicap 9 points last year. So far in my 3rd season playing my irons game is my strongest. I think I'm at the point where my self taught game has reached its plateau and it's time to get some lessons.

Congratulations... that's some great improvement in your game.

How do you feel about the Miura CB301's as an iron suitable for a mid handicap player? I'm 72 years old, but I'm still tweaking my equipment. I've been playing the Apex CF19's for a year or so and then just a couple months ago switched to the Honma XP-1, but they are not forged. I've been interested in Miura but just worried that it might not be suitable for some one in my demographics. I currently play to about a 12-14 handicap.

As far as the irons go, I feel like they could be a little more forgiving, but as far as feel goes they are unmatched. When I got these irons it was my 4th set of the year. Yes, I know......I wanted to really test irons out. My progression started with Ping G410's, went to P790's, fell into Apex Pro 19's, and then did a swan dive into the CB-301's. I feel like the Apex' were slightly longer and a little more forgiving, but in the end the Miura's just felt too good to put down. I've always had a problem with a straight pull with short irons, and getting the long irons to launch. With the CB's those issues didn't completely go away, but they sure stopped happening so frequently. If you're looking into a JDM club, I don't think you'll find a better club than a Miura. THAT SAID- I've hit the Honma TR-20 irons more than a few rounds this year and are surprisingly pretty good. Those and the Srixons would be a good option if you're wanting to spend less. Make no mistake, Miura irons ARE NOT CHEAP. matter of fact, nothing Miura is cheap, but you do get what you pay for.

Just replaced my ping i3s for a set of wilson D7s. I hit two clubs longer with that set no false advertizing here regarding distance. Tried Rogue and 410 before and they surely went long also but not like this. First round with them was huge fun. 125 metres hmm I don´t want to go long pitching wedge... Hmm still went to back of green! I may keep my old ping i3 pw for the gap to my gap wedge that don´t do much more then 100 metres.

Despite the explosiveness they actually feel very nice to hit and not that hard. Particularly for pitching and chipping it feels really buttery soft like you have a catapult working when hitting the soft urethane and you get mega roll. Not beneficial perhaps but really nice feeling. Backspin is something these don´t seem to do so overshooting greens may be a theme. Not always you can roll it in easilly. There my old i3s shine. They just stop where they land :)

I'm playing Ping i200s red dot with Modus 120 stiff shafts. I've been playing more but when I picked them up 18 months or so ago I was probably around an 18 and now down to 13.

Used to play 712 AP1s and liked them but the i200s are softer and more accurate

Trying the MP20 HMBs right, just because had heard so much about them. Getting the occasional flyers that shoot over the back of the green.

Have a set of Ping blueprints that I just got shafted up and ready, and thinking of switching to them for a few weeks.

J15CB’s since 2016.Strayed away and always came back to then.

Mine have $-Taper 125’s since last year.

Tgis is the first year I’ve used the 4-iron and for some reason it’s my most consistent club, so far.

Great combo and improved decent angle are helping so much.

The only other irons that intrigue me are the Miura tc-201s.

I'm at 18.5. It's not so much the heads for me (can spin and launch my mp-5's just fine), but I am just really used to heavier shafts. I tried to play a GI set that I had, stiff flex, the shaft/swing weight was so light I could not get consistent contact. I do hope to get some heavier but forgiving head longer irons some day, specifically for 5 iron. Either that or a 5 iron hybrid. If I can get a nice high soft launch that carries 185-190 or so that would be sweet.

I was actually playing better with my early extension swing, and the switch to a more rotational swing has been quite the journey. I'm not sure if it's worth it LOL. Used to hit long irons better too, but slowly getting the hang of it. Don't really practice enough anyway.

13.9, playing HMPs 6-PW. Have a slow swing speed and carry Ping G410 4 and 5 hybrids as well. The hybrids have been an absolute improvement to my bag. Really enjoy the HMPs as well.

I'm about the same handicap and have a problem with early extension as well, and a severe lack of practice too lol. I just picked up a set of Cleveland 588 mts in the stock tractionlite 85 reg flex steel shafts, and I really like the feel of them, especially when flushed. I'm still getting used to them and so my handicap is trending the wrong way, but I'm liking them so far. I'm hoping to get them retrofitted to check loft and lie and such.

Playing off 15.8 handicap with some old Taylormade Rocketbladez tour irons. Picked up a set of Mizuno JPX 900 forged second hand, and have never looked back. From the first hit my strike consistency and shot shape has improved dramatically, and the feel is so much better. Played around 7/8 rounds with them and only 1 of them games was above my handicap. The rest I've been scoring 36-40 points stableford. Can see my handicap coming down
