Sweepers - What irons are you currently using

Sweeper here...looking at new irons this season and putting together the shortlist of heads to try. Players irons preferred, maybe a combo in the very short irons.

Coming from Miura CB1008's, which have been great, but just time for something new (new miura's are not in the budget). The Miuras were longer than i expected and I'm not super concerned about gaining iron distance, consistency is what I'm after.

What's in your bag and what did you try?

Cheers

I’m a sweeper/picker, really enjoying the PXG 0211 irons. I believe they fit in the hollow players distance category.

The feel is outstanding and consistent distances.

Since distance is not a requirement, I found Maltby DBM (or TE) forged irons superb for feel and accuracy. A sweeper’s dream with slim sole and thin top line. My only gripe with them was I was much shorter with them. My miss is usually thin and the DBM irons are very good at covering up that miss.

Ping i210 here. Came from mostly AP2 (712, 716, 718). I don't have an issue with the slightly thicker sole. I play in MN so pretty "average" conditions I guess.

This sweeper really enjoys my Titleist 620 MB&CB combo. I wouldn't suggest them for most golfers. The 620 CB's are a bit more challenging than my 716CB or 718CB's. Titleist got both sets right though. MB's and CB's match up really well. I have always looked forward to playing golf but never been this excited about hitting clubs as with 620s. Frankly, I been playing blades since taking up the game thirty years back, but for some unknown reason always feel excited about the opportunity to hit these irons and watch sweet strikes do what was planned.

Last thought that may help some; the key to choosing the right clubhead specs is know how you impact the ball and what your divots say. For me, from 2 iron to 8i I tend to sweep the ball off the surface, leaving a minor scrape but 9i-LW I leave a more pronounced scraper down to turf roots. Knowing the differences is important. You don't want to think your a sweeper but really a digger; you won't like the result. For this sweeper key is low bounce throughout the set, as close to "0" bounce as possible in long irons. My 2i has 1* as does 3i & 4i., etc. Also, more sharp than blunt leading edges to get as close to the ground as possible, and minimal camber in both directions, or as close to flat as possible, that is what I got in my 620 irons. Also, mine have been shaved a bit. My 2 cents, have a great day. I am going to hit some little chips and pitch shots in the office.

Both sets I went graphite shafts are sweep friendly to me in the Titleist T100 and the Taylormade P760.

Harder desert soils here basically don't allow much digging, and the soles on each works for me with no elbow issues now that I am full time graphite in irons.

Been a sweeper all my life and a Titleist blade guy since the Box Blades in the mid-80s. Currently play the 718 MBs and looking forward to upgrading to 620s once I see a good deal on WRX!

Not trying to hijack the thread, but any other sweepers find it easier to hit a long iron vs hybrid?

I'm a sweeper and I like a wider sole with some bounce. Since people have differing experiences you'll have to try different styles to see what works best for you. And hitting off mats won't let you know about turf interaction. I play G400 irons and they work great for me point and shoot but if you wanted something more svelte, the I200 or 210 are very nice.

I don't think all sweepers are created equal, but if you have an upward attack angle (or lack of down with irons), swing in to outish, have lots of dynamic loft. If that's you then a thin sole is the way to go... not much bounce and a rounded/beveled leading edge for when you skim the turf first.

900 series Srixons are phenomenal for this kind of swing. 700 too, but to a lesser degree... blend them up if you can.

This is definitely the conventional thinking. Personally I'm not sure it's true.

I used to be a digger but changed my swing via lessons to be more of a sweeper. I play Ping G20. Not many clubs out there with a larger sole front-to-back. OR more bounce from club to club.

But there's bounce and there's "effective" bounce

I thought I'd have trouble but really didn't. Never much wondered why though. But if you look at the picture below of the G20 you will see how quickly the sole curves upward so the "effective bounce" is actually less than you might expect from looking at the specs, more like a thinner bladed iron and quite a bit lower than the bounce angle as measured.

Add a bit of a forward press and,,,,,,,,,,,
