Buyer says he received the package today and that it was empty. Has good feedback. Do I just refund him and go through USPS for the $100 insurance that I’m entitled to and eat the rest?

Your nosed buddy, he will have to take the package into the local office to verify and they will cut him the check for 100 ( if that is what it’s insured for. If you refund him and he doesn’t do anything you can’t file a claim without the proof. Be careful and try to work with him.

If the package was left delivered unattended without signature/person received then the USPS is not responsible for theft once delivered.

Anyone could open the package, remove item and leave the empty package!

USPS insurance is for damage to or loss of the package during delivery.

You would need the carrier to verify the package had been damage, the item was missing and was verified with receiver upon delivery.

It might be best to have him bring the package to the local post office to obtain a claim form. Also, have him send you pictures of the package to see if it was damaged in anyway. $100 is better than $0.

I’ve always passed on insurance and this is the first time in 15-20 years that a package was delivered empty. Got lucky and ahead of the game with years of bypassed insurance. Just sucks that this happened.

 

Nothing interesting here. Shipped out a T22 USPS Priority Express. Was delivered by the PO. Post man left it by the person’s gate. Didn’t even attempt to ring the bell or even leave it on the doorstep. Maybe saw the box was slit open, who knows. Buyer sent me the Ring video of the Post man leaving it there and photo of the box. Buyer came home, got to the package and it was slit open.

So it was stolen before the box was delivered by the postal worker? Damn...

I don’t know if it was the postal worker and prefer not to assume anything. It just happened somewhere in between me dropping it off and getting delivered. The buyer texted his postal person as he knew him personally and stated that usually packages that are opened are put into a bag or stamped/stickied with something but they are still required to deliver it regardless of whether the contents are in the package or not. The post person mentioned he didn’t look inside the opened packaging as that is a big no no in the business. He sent me screenshots of the conversation.

I think just refunding it sooner than later was just easier for me to come to grips that I’m out on the putter or the money. Just an unfortunate scenario but at the end of the day I didn’t insure it properly and it was an understood risk.

Easy to say now, but as much as I hate doing it too, I insure anything over $100 and generally require signature confirmation for anything north of $200. Too many thefts and scams out there and insurance will pay for itself if you just have to make 1 claim.

Considering the crazy delay in USPS system, I think to pay 20-30 bucks for the expensive clubs gives you a big peace of mind. Worth every penny.

At minimum signature required should be purchased. This way the buyer can inspect the package before accepting from USPS. But even with that there's nothing you can do. Sorry for the loss.

If it were me and the postman stated that they noticed the package was opened prior to delivering it, I would have them sign a statement to that extent and then submit a postal theft complaint with the Postmaster General's office.
