Best paper notebooks for tracking stats on course?

Recommended Posts

Maybe Scotty Cameron can come out with one that costs $49? That way people on WRX will be happy.

Go to a stationary store?

i'm looking to track the kind of stuff (e.g.) DECADE tracks. obviously there will be limitations, such as less precise distance measurement for shots. but i'd be happy if i could just scribble some stuff down during a round in the same booklet i use to verify yardages and keep score. i can wait to put data into a digital spreadsheet until after i get home.

i've used scorecards to track the basics like fairways, greens, and number of putts. but i'd like to start tracking more detailed stats without having to hand-make a mini spreadsheet with each new scorecard. using a pre-made template is much more ideal imo.

the reason i'm opposed to using my phone (at least for now) is because i like it to remain off and in my bag while i'm playing. maybe i'll change my tune in the future but i'd like to get started with something low tech for the time being, if that makes sense.

I use one of those horizontal scorecard holders that allows a folded scorecard on the left, a little memo pad notebook on the right, and a pencil in the middle

1da15116-6539-4b35-9689-5eab686d3982.jpeg(Local muni scorecard isn’t in left slot as I burned it ?. Bad round). When folded, not bigger than standard scorecard holder and fits in back pocket easy

Opening notebook I’ve pre setup a strokes gained table (with ink) where I can record type of shot and distance for every shot. Takes literally 3 sec for every shot since I need to know shot distance anyway in order to select club or estimate putt strength

a94cf77a-5cf0-457e-8a9f-aa74ccb61b22.jpegI then put into SG spreadsheet when I get home. Erase pencil data after entering and template is ready to go next time. I’ll try and find the thread where the guy who made the spreadsheet was giving access for free

Here’s thread. Not sure if spreadsheet still available.https://forums.golfwrx.com/discussion/1094857/ive-developed-a-strokes-gained-spreadsheet-and-anyone-interested-can-use-it/p1

I just started Decade and have imputed 5 rounds so far. I just use a scorecard. I have a few tweeks, but I’m getting close.

I started filling it out in order of play, but am moving to order of input.

First box is score/mental score.

Second box is club off the tee and result to help remind me when I chart things out.

Putts are pretty obvious. I put a letter to remind me of short/long.

Final box is approach distance.

I keep my stats on the score card now days but back in the day I would simply remember my round shot by shot after the round was over and note the stats that I was keeping for the particular club that I used on each shot. No spread sheets back then so it was all plotted by hand. This is a skill that can be learned is not that hard to do if you practice it a little bit and I actually don't have a very good memory for a lot of things.

i just want to say thank you to everyone who's contributed feedback so far. we're prepping for a camping trip today, so between organizing gear and sneaking in a few minutes of golf on TV i doubt i'll have time to participate in this thread until we return to civilization late-next week. thanks again!

Not sure if it's exactly what you are looking for, but Moleskine makes a nice little notebook about scorecard size that's about $5. You can get them lined, blank, with grids. You can find them at Barnes & Noble, usually in packs of 2 or 3. I keep one in my golf bag to record swing thoughts, what I'm working on now, things that have been helpful in the past, etc. I used to track stats when I was younger but haven't done that in years.

I'm only 1/3 of the way through Decade foundations, but it's how many of your shots were you 100% committed to the club, target, ball flight, line/speed, etc.

the more i look into decade, the more i like it.

and thanks for sharing the image of your system despite my reservations about using a scorecard; it seems simple and practical yet detailed enough to track better stats than what i'm used to. i'm heavily leaning toward doing this now.

question: what do the "x" and up arrows signify in the "tee" row?

When I hit it straight, but run through the fairway. You only need it as a reminder on where to place your shots when you enter the data.

Yeah, for each shot you only have to record the distance remaining to the hole (yds for all swing shots and ft. for putting), and the type of shot.
The type of shots are
t = tee shot
f = fairway
r = rough
s = sand
x = recovery shot
g = green
since those are the categories Brodie has strokes gained data for (1 sheet in spreadsheet)
So that only takes like 3 sec per shot to enter 2 items (distance to a hole and a letter indicating type)
Spreadsheet ouputs
SG Total (compared to field = Broadie data)
SG Tee
SG approach
SG around green (think 30 yds from hole and under)
SG putting
which is more than enough for my purposes and small amount of data collection not really impacting flow of round.
Ive attached my spreadsheet which I've sorta sanitized to be more generic. The two tabs are because I play a lot of 9 hole rounds and broke up my home course into 2 9 hole entries so I could track them seperately.
You only have to enter the green highlighted cells
SG Calc sanitized.xls
