Iron recommendation after using MBs

I am looking to move away from Muscle Backs for the second time in the last 10 years. My prior irons were Cleveland TA-1s, Titleist 712 MBs, and currently Mizuno mp18 MBs. I was fitted and used Srixon z765s 3-4 years ago. Distance consitancy was my biggest issue I had with them and is why I ultimately gave up on them after a few seasons. What I found was they were about a club longer, had way more fliers out of the rough, and occasionally a long ball out of the fairway. I keep playing muscle backs because even though they are harder to hit, the distance is predictable. What is bringing me back to wanting cavity backs again is obviously the forgiveness. I don't work the ball side to side a whole lot. I pretty much just play a small fade and change the trajectory as needed. My biggest concern is distance consitancy. Does anyone have recommendations on what mid-low handicap cavity backs would give me the forgiveness without the distance consitancy issues?

t100 are a very nice profile, I could easily slip a set of those in my bag.

Wilson Staff V6 also another great option

Driver = Callaway Smoke-Ai Max-D

3 wood = Callaway Smoke-Ai Max HL

3 Hybrid = Taylormade Stealth Pro
Irons = 4-PW Miura KM 700
Gap Wedge = Miura HB 50*

Sand Wedge = Taylormade MG2 56*

Putter = LAB DF3

Ball = TP5x pix

For an easier option you could go for a blended set. Keep your PW-7 iron in the MBs and then get something like the T100 in the 6,5,4,3 or even the CBs. That way it blends nicely and you dont have to worry as much about the fliers on the shorter irons, you will still see some jumpers on the longer stuff from the rough, but thats relatively manageable.

slightly, they have more weight at the perimeter and away from the center of the face. On slightly higher strikes which tend to occur in the rough the spin can really drop more than a balde. On something that tends to have less spin than a pure MB, fliers in my experience are slightly more of an issue with the bigger perimeter weighted and forgiving clubs. I play a combo set, I get fliers with my bladed low irons as well as my longer irons, its a nature of the game.

For some more context, I play a 965/765 (PW-7 then 6-4) combo set. Im in my fourth year with them. I do play my 765 3/2/0 degrees weak to keep my gaping/decent angle/and spin where I need them to be. So if youre noticing a lot of fliers and clubs are going overly far, thats another option to increase spin.

Personally for my game, with the longer clubs, the major miss is short instead of long so I am perfectly ok accepting a flier now and then.

Wilson staff VG are a win. Cobra Forged tour never get enough credit and are way cheaper than same condition AP2 / T100 sets. Cobra CBs are also great. Ping Iblades are solid and I210 is a great set.

Guy, find a store and go swing your butt off. Whatever feels best and gives you your numbers, use it, use it again, go home, come back, use it again, repeat 2 - 3 times. Make sure you want it and didn't just hit 3 - 4 balls 175 yards with a 7 iron.

I don't think a standard cavity back like the Titleist 620CB is any more forgiving than a blade. They still lose tons of ball speed on mishits and perform very similarly to a blade in all areas. It sounds like you could benefit from something with more tech built into the head like T100/200 or even hollow body irons like the P790.

When doing a fitting, head first, then fine tune with shaft. PX shafts have a stiffer tip vs. the others you mentioned. Try Mizuno shaft optimizer to get some suggestions. Would be interesting to see some of your 7 iron numbers and ball flight. Everyone is different because of desired ball flight. So comes down to what you want your irons to do. I draw the ball, so I need a more stable tip. Also 75 mph swing speed, so Modus 105 works best for me.

Those are some good choices but aren't the MMC's hollow? I just don't trust hollow irons?

I had 765 as well and now I have T100. turf interaction for me was better with the T100 and they are consistent with distances. For me, the T100 are forgiving on my miss, toe and low on the face. I really do think the design of the T100 reduces gear effect twisting on shots. Also, if you are used to looking down at a MB the T100 will fit your eye. I would think you need to be careful with thick top lines and offset on more forgiving clubs.

I just made the jump from MP-37s to a cavity. I hit all of the latest forged players cavity irons, and wound up preferring the MP20 MMC's to everything. They are pretty spectacular, closely followed by the Titleist 620CB. As was said above, they are not hollow blades

Now, a complete wildcard, I didn't buy any of those. I wound up with Honma TW-747V's. The feel is every bit as good as my 37's was, with definite added forgiveness, and they cost 1/3 (new on ebay) what a new set of MMC's cost.

Yeah, that sounds like what I'm looking for. I really like the price of the I210s though. They are on sale and 400 dollars cheaper than the t100s. I'm going to go hit both of those and see what they are like.I did the mizuno shaft optimizer two years ago when I bought the mp18s and it said x100, project x 6.5, or KBS Tour X. Which was interesting to me now that I've played all three. They all seem to be pretty different shafts. The fitter made it seem I could choose any of those and just go with what feels best. Having not had success with the project x 6.5s in the Srixon 765s it was immediately out in my head. The X100 seemed to be a good shaft for me in the TA1s and 712s but I like the launch of the kbs is in Mp 18s. Just from playing them, the kbs seem to provide similar spin to dynamic gold but launch closer to the project x. So I'm just not sure if its the more forgiving cavity back club head that was the issue with distance consistency or I just had the wrong shaft in them. I don't think I'll get the answer unless I hit different club/shaft combinations from different lies but I'll give it another try.

That's the idea of the shaft optimizer, gives you suggestions, then you demo from there to see which produces the desired flight/performance you want. Pick a head you like the look and feel of that produces the performance you are looking for, then fine tune with the shaft that gives you the right numbers and feel you are looking for. Most of the cavity players clubs will be consistent, so that shouldn't be an issue?! Comes down to the right head/shaft combo that is right for YOU!

T100 are definitely more than worthy of consideration. I have never played blades but I have an old set of 714 CB’s which were pretty similar in profile to their blade brothers and the 714 CB’s look chunky compared to the T100 and the CB’s are anything but. Incredible how much Titleist have been able to put into such a small package.

I have played many different shafts in my irons, for some reason the KBS C-Taper 130x and the PX 6.5 have been winners for me, but we are all different, that said, like mentioned above, go with what feels best and gives you the performance need...
