My Game Improvement Experiment is starting!!

Ive been on wrx for 12 years +. Gamed pretty much all players irons over the past 12 years since taking up golf. Mostly if not exclusively AP2 models, Mizuno MP models and a few Nike Blades mixed in years ago.

I'm not very good at golf I'll admit it. I don't practice ever. Life is very busy. Got down to a 3 HC but hover around 4-5. Shoot mostly mid to high 70s with a few ugly rounds over 80. I can go low when things are going well.

Lately I've had the shanks and not hitting the middle of the irons (usually the best part of my game). My driving chipping and putting have been on a scratch level this year. Iron play is killing me.

*********

Ive been fit 3-4 times for irons I do it every 2 years and hear the same thing - you don't spin it enough you need players heads to get the spin and launch. Bigger irons you'll never hold greens, you will hit them too low, you will hook them too much, .......

F that I need help. Every time I go away and use GI rentals or borrow a set of Rentals I seem to get used to them and 10 min and play just fine.

******

I ordered a set of 790s today completely stock with a pair of hybrids. Going to ditch the 3 wood for a few rounds and see how this goes. Hopefully i hit them well and the days of Players irons might be over for a bit.

Honestly the first time in my life I feel like my irons are not forgiving enough and it's holding me back.

Very Interessting Thread.

i Made the Same decision years ago with z565 Irons. Was nice to Hit the 7 Iron 190yards. I had to ad a Wedge with 46-48 degree. The only thing that changed was the number on the bottom of the Club.

I didn‘t play better Golf with These Irons. In fact I got lazy with my Swing. And a Bad Swing is a Bad Swing. Yeah, I was not punished that Hard as with a Players Iron.

but for me ist was doing nothing.

on the other Hand, of I go with a pure MB ist defenetly costs me strokes.

hope it will Go in the direction you want in the Long term.

Let us know how it goes. I'm transitioning in the opposite direction. Too much dispersion between a solid hit and absolutely flushing it in game improvement irons for me. Gaining alot of confidence right now in my yardages and am finely dialing them down to numbers instead of 10 yard windows.

Interested to hear how this goes for you... I've always played cavity backs and am thinking about making the plunge the other direction but my golf budget got slashed...

I don't think it will change my score dramatically either direction...

Chances are you won't see much difference at your level. Only thing a game improvement iron can really help with is distance loss on slight mishits. If you are missing left and right nothing will change (could even be bigger misses because of reduced spin for stability). If you are chunking it or blading it nothing will change. If you are hitting it a bit off center and missing short they could help but they have stronger lofts so essentially it's like taking 1 more club anyway. That said if you look down on it and it gives you the confidence to swing without fear it may be worth it.

One thing I noticed about GI irons is that they all seem to have more offset, which is really bad for people who hit it left. I have thought about changing to GI from my blade like clubs if it weren't for that.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

Keep us updated... do you have the new irons in hand? Probably going to be a decent adjustment period, especially if your time is already limited.

It made me laugh. I’d like to be not very good at golf.

As for going GI, I’ve done it. Main thing it does for me is get my confidence back. But I skip the 790 and go on to the even more forgiving M5, which of all the GI irons I looked at had the most player-esque shape matched with the least offset.

As been stated previously, keep us updated. I went from cb's, with a lot of offset, to a hollow bodied GI iron. I also don't practice a lot, but I do play a fair amount. I'm liking them so far, but I've also set up a lesson with my guy to make sure I'm using them to the best of their abilities.

Yeah and with no practise.

I have the old ping i3 oversize which is not as hardcore GI as modern GI. They give great feedback on misshits but misshits don´t go well either.

Went to the Wilson D7. I am worried about distance control but the courses I play its okay to roll it onto the green so if I just get out of my mind to land it on the flag it should work. Less spin I believe so they don´t seem to check up as fast as my old Pings that do one bounce then stops.

But since the D7 is two clubs up I am playing with shorter shaft length all the time and it makes it much easier to control the swing for me. Biggest benefit for me. Perimeter weighting surely do it´s job too when not hitting it perfectly it always want to just fly.

But the amazing trampolin effect built in should have some effect on distance control if you constantly hit the center I recon.

OP, if you need more spin, a ball change can help and weaken your 790s by 2*. Angle of decent also helps with stopping power. Around 45* is the general number we would like to see. Loft is your friend. Ditch the 3 wood for a 5 wood might help also. Hybrids vs. 3/4 irons.

Good luck with the T200's. Don't listen to the haters that think that every club that doesn't get regular play on the PGA tour is for hacks. You will do fine!

I would say you need to play at least a month with a set of clubs to see if they work (that would be playing a few times per week). They may not work but half the problem people have is that they complain about the difference after day 1, and it sticks in their head forever. You may still not like them after 3 months of giving them a dedicated run but the path/mindset now is almost certain to lead to the clubs going back to the bench.

funny ....

last night i had the best score all year.

Not sure irons had much to do with it I was hitting the driver well.

Made a swing change. The T200 feel ok (especially when you middle it which I seem to never do lately).

I did end up on the back of 2 greens and the flight was lower than I want.

Ill give them another few rounds to see. T100 with PX just came in. Another 2 good rounds with T200 and the T100 won't leave the box.

Those T100's have crazy lofts. They may be the greatest thing since sliced bread, and I'm a huge GI club supporter, but no way I'd use a set with a 38* PW. Anyway, please don't expect any of those clubs to feel as good as a small forged players club on a center strike or you are setting yourself up for a fail. Most of the better GI clubs feel pretty decent on off center strikes but they don't feel like forged when hitting the center. Interestingly, a lot of guys say large GI clubs feel numb and that they don't provide enough feedback so you can tell where on the face the ball was struck. Can't win it seems; either the clubs feel too good or not good enough.

Sorry, I was thinking the T100 is the more GI clubs, not less. T100 is replacement for AP2 right?

what does the wedge setup look like for a 38 degree pitching wedge? I can’t wrap my brain around it... I guess you have to go with the set gap wedge? That would create way too many problems in my bag.
