Titleist AVX ...Distance Gains

The Pearl

Recommended Posts

After spending way too many hours pouring over the site that can't be named ball testing research, I have been playing the ProV1x. 90 MPH swing speed so the ProV1X was the logical choice. I also have tried the wunderkind ball..the Snelll MTX-B. Both performed as expected.

Recently found a AVX. At first I thought the distance gains were a one off. But I a have kept playing it despite the research data really not supporting that this ball be anything special for somebody in my swing speed category.

But, goodness gracious, my drivng has picked up 15, sometimes 20 yds consistently and my iron distances are 1/2 to 1 full length farther. This ball, for me, just keeps going and going and than rolls for days.

It launches lower obviously spins lower with the long clubs. Launches high with the short irons. No problem holding any green. I am playing last years' ball right now so it is not quite in the X spin level to be sure but not bad.

Picked up the 2020 model and have only chipped with it....noticeable spin upgrade.

So the question is, anybody else with a slower swing speed seen a boost in distances throughout the bag?

I found an extra 10-15 yards of rollout with my driver using AVX instead of Pro V1x. My driver clubhead speed maxes out about 90mph at best.

Unfortunately I also found an extra 10 yards of rollout on the occasional, random 6, 7 or 8 iron approach shot to a back hole location. The one thing I can't abide with a golf ball is having to constantly hit shots 30 feet short of the hole just in case the ball doesn't check up. I was glad to get back to the Pro V1x.

I didn't find any carry distance increase at all with either driver or short irons and wedges. The extra distance as all on the ground due to lower spin and trajectory.

FWIW, long irons and fairway woods I thought were really long with AVX. But those aren't really the core parts of my game so it didn't help as much as the extra driver roll out.

Thanks NB, totally makes sense on the approach game. I have not experienced the "jumper" yet, although I am not surprised some players will have this experience. And you are right about the PROV1x..is there more consistent ball to play in golfer? I know it is my own stubborness but I can't get used to the firmer feel.

I think the reason I would get those balls hopping over the greens with AVX (and to be clear, that happened maybe once every couple rounds, not constantly) is because my shots are always lower in trajectory and spin than I'd like them to be, given how firm my home course usually plays. So with any ball, even the lovely Pro V1x, I'm taking a bit of a risk flying a 7-iron all the way to the hole when it's on the very back of the green. With Pro V1x it comes down to do I catch the shot cleanly, with AVX I had the sense that even perfect contact sometimes was not enough.

There are guys I play with who generate enough speed, height and spin that a ball like AVX is never going to "jump" on them unless they badly mishit it. Heck, one guy can stop a Titleist Velocity a couple feet from where it lands with a 5-iron. If my swing could do that, I'd take the extra driver and long-iron distance of the AVX in a skinny minute!

I do agree Pro V1x is a marvel of consistency. But it also fits my wish-list for its basic characteristics. I've always wanted to hit the ball high and spin it.

You might want to give he 2020 version a try. I have only chipped and pitched it at the practice facility, but there is more noticeable greenside spin. Not sure about "approach" shots. I will try it in the next few days but I play mostly in the mornings and our muni courses are really well maintained so stopping a ball is relatively easy on any good strike.

Funny story...

There was a little COIVD-shutdown-related SNAFU on my Titleist loyalty program order this spring. I ended up receiving my order of "4 for the price of 3" boxes of Pro V1x, twice. Along with the dozen I already had that's nine dozen, for me at full year's supply and then some. The cool part was, since it was Titleist's error they told me to keep the extras but didn't charge me for them.

So I might not be trying any other balls this year! Good thing I like Pro V1x.

My SS with a Driver is about 103 and I see the exact same results as you do. This ball does everything I could ever ask a ball today. In general i'm a very high spin/high ball flight player and this ball has given me a lower, less spinny ball flight that keeps things MUCH straighter and therefore much longer. I picked up about 5-10 off the tee, and about 1 full club of length. Switched last summer and haven't ever looked back. Have absolutely zero issues holding any greens (but I do still hit this ball VERY high as well).

I have been switching back and forth between the AVX and Pro V1x for about a year or so now. My handicap has fluctuated between 10 down to 6.5 and back up to 7.5 during that time. My conclusion is that the V1x is the more consistent ball.

I’m 10 yards longer with the driver and a half club longer 4-9 iron with the AVX, but I definitely get the occasional WTF moment when I hit my stock 145 yard 9-iron 165 yards for no apparent reason. Hardly ever see that with the V1x.

The trade off is that I hit more fairways with the AVX. It’s got a decidedly lower launch & trajectory and flies straighter. With the V1x my big miss - a block/push - becomes a block slice. With the irons the AVX lower trajectory produces a tad more roll out and the previously mentioned, “How did I hit a 7-iron 190 yards?” The V1x spins more but stops quicker so my misses aren’t as punitive.

I haven’t seen a ton of difference with the wedges. I’m a high ball hitter that doesn’t spin it that much with the short clubs so for me the difference is negligible. The AVX hits and rolls a foot or two while the V1x hits and stops or maybe backs up a tad. Full disclosure - I’m mainly a muni to high end public course player. I see a lot of firm Bermuda greens.

Overall I’d much rather have the V1x in the bag during a money game. Other than that, the AVX is fine. I’d say the AVX is a solid A-student and the Pro V1x an A+.

The AVX is a great ball for many of us, I think. It is long. The gripes about going off the back of the greens...At our course (the greens are about 2 years old) I don't care if you're hitting a marshmallow - you need to not land near the back or you're off the back. Just plan accordingly. We have one par 4 that I always make sure I'm aiming to land at the front no matter the pin placement. But, there are courses around here that are very soft - so perhaps then it'd be more of a concern. A few of the guys I play with in my regular weekend group game that AVX. I can always spot them right away with those cool dimples...

The deal is, I've played roughly 2,100-2,200 rounds at my home course mostly with ProV1x or similar balls and I know exactly what the risk/reward is for flying the ball onto back tiers under various conditions. The AVX definitely warped that risk/reward in the risk direction, that's all I'm saying. In situations where I ought to be safe as long as I strike it cleanly (with a Pro V1x) once in a while AVX hops over the green, dead.

Not a deal breaker by any means. After 100 or so rounds with AVX I pretty much recalibrated my expectations. If it had been legitimately way, way longer throughout the bag it probably would have been worth playing short on some back hole locations. But when I went back after a year and a half and tried a few rounds with Pro V1x again, I was surprised to find I only gave up maybe 10 yards or so on my best drives by using Pro V1x instead of AVX. It was a small enough difference I couldn't 100% say there really was a difference.

There's one guy I play with almost every week who started playing AVX when I did and he's still at it. He really does find (and I tend to agree) that AVX is getting him a full club closer to the green with extra distance off the tee and then he's hitting nearly one additional club less on approach shots because AVX is lower and hotter off the irons than the Pro V1 he used to use. For him, that's well worth seeing a ball bounce over a green once every couple of rounds (when the greens are firm). I see his point but it just wasn't that sort of big distance gain for me.

Speaking of newer versions, before my nearly 18-month AVX odyssey I'd been playing the 2015 and then 2017 versions of ProV1x. The 2018 AVX did seem to give me a fair bit more driver distance, mostly by landing at a flatter angle and running out hotter.

When I switched back to Pro V1x it was the 2019 version and I had a hard time seeing the expected "give back" of my AVX driving distance gains. I wonder if the 2019 Pro V1x lands a little hotter than the earlier versions or maybe it's because I had also changed to a different driver about that time.

Hard to say these things when you're comparing memories of a last year's version with one driver to what happens with this years version with a different driver. And what the heck, my swing might have changed too (I wish!).

For me, if the AVX is hit on the lower launch angle, it comes out with very little spin and rolls forever. Same with my 3w and 4w. I can get 10 to 12 yds longer with these clubs. The distance gains are cumulatve so I am now getting to select par 4s that I could not get to prior and hitting two less clubs into the par 5s. If mishit, the AVX will go farther than the X, for me. I hit two tee balls last Sunday. Both felt the same, slighly toward the toe and both on the same line with the same trajectory. The AVX was at least 10 yds farther. But if I do hit the X perfectly the gap narrows.

I have picked up probably a consistent half iron of distance with the AVX, but I would not conisder this "enough" of a game changer. As you have mentioned before, the ProVX is as reliable a ball made. It performs every single time as expected.

I hit my irons high enough that stopping power is not an issue, plus most of my rounds are in the morning when the course is the softest. Chipping is my strength so not any real adjustment to the AVX.

It really comes down to what works best. I can see how the AVX might not "do it" for many golfers, particularly at its price point. And the X is an acquired taste. My buddy has tried to make the switch but he firmess in putting just freaks him out.

I see a boost in distance with most (if not all) of the "mid" compression golf balls, 2018 AVX included. But I must also agree with others in that I get the occasional, random, and when you least expect it, flyer (but not from a flyer lie). My sure fire par or better becomes double bogey or worse. I don't believe this has ever happened when playing the premium high compression balls....but....I hit those so much worse in general that I just have to live with the bit of randomness from the "mids".

Played V1x for a number of years then switched to the softer Chrome Soft (2nd version) for a couple of years until just after the AVX came out. Tried the AVX and at first wasn't impressed.
Tried it again in late 2018 and found I also picked up about 10 yards of carry and about 5 on the irons, just as @Brass_Bullseye with very little issue with the slightly more release on the greens. Been using it since early '19.
I'm not crazy about the new one though. Seems to me I've given up most of the gains I got with the original ball.
So I read that golf ball test on the other site and firmer=longer makes some sense and since my driver has me down to around 2,000 spin pretty regularly I figure if a slightly spinier ball that will give me a couple or 3 extra mph might work out reasonably well and with the extra spin going into the greens and chipping, I might feel a little more comfortable with stopping it quicker/easier. Who knows ? Before the Chrome Soft I always preferred firmer golf balls anyway so,,,,,,,,,,,,,
So I picked up a sleeve each of ProV1X, Bridgestone Tour B, TaylorMade TP5X and Chrome Soft X. I've been putting quite a bit with all of them and no issues. The all feel just fine off the putter. As I play some going forward I'll try 'em all out and see which one I like best but I'm thinking the AVX is probably done for now.

Tom, my experience has been the same as yours as I am an extremely high flight/spin player. In full disclosure, I love softer compression balls. I'll give up a few mph of ball speed for the feel any day. My driver SS is about 109-111 and I was having problems with a strong fade off the tee. For whatever reason, the AVX consistently fades 0-5 yards vs. 10 with the V1 and 20 with the V1X. I went from the V1X in 2016 to Chrome Soft in 2017 to the first AVX briefly in 2018, then to Bridgestone RXS...until this year. The second gen AVX fits my game perfectly. I probably picked up 15 off the tee. My ball speed is down a few mph from V1/V1X, but I'd rather be 295 in the fairway than 305 in the trees. I still spin the AVX about 10,000 with my 50 degree which is more than enough. The one difference I don't see is in peak height. I hit the AVX about the same height as Pro V1. This ball just gives me confidence standing on the tee. And the soft feel throughout the bag is really nice icing on the cake. The feel of this ball is amazing from tee to green.

I did a little unscientific test where I hit 2 8 irons, one with AVX and one with Bridgestone RXS from about 160, uphill, into a slight breeze. The AVX hit and stopped dead while the RXS spun back about 30 feet. I was sold on AVX after that. If you overspin your irons, this is a great ball.

Where are these people finding 15 yards by changing just the ball.  I am not buying it.  I am about 90 mph on the driver swing.   I found an AVX and hit it versus Pro V1x.  They seem pretty close and the AVX seems slightly longer.

One thing that I have found in the past is that the Titleist non Pro V1 and 1x balls are usually not very good at least for me.  I bought a dozen Velocitys recently and was not impressed.  I like my old leftover Pinnacle Exceptions which is an older ball but made by the same parent company.

The AVX, to me, is one of the first Titleist models that matches up to the V1 and V1x.  It is a good ball but 15 more yards?

Oddly, my brother in law was fitted with new TM SIM irons at GolfTec and said he is getting 15 more yards.  He is a snowbird so I will see pretty soon if it is true.

On a firm fairway, the lower trajectory and somewhat reduced spin make the AVX land really flat for me. It can certainly be up to 10-15 yards longer under those ideal conditions. But it isn't carrying any farther off the driver than Pro V1x, just extra roll-out.

And with the irons, if there's any more carry it's a couple yards (due to reduced spin) but once in a while it will land really hot and bounce forward.

I was initially impressed with the potential for some extra yardage from AVX. But some extra runout on a rock-hard fairway or unexpected release on a firm green aren't really a distance improvement. In the end it wasn't saving me any strokes. I'd rather have the higher trajectory and extra spin for more repeatable distances with my irons.

Interesting topic, maybe i need to go back to trying to AVX. I initially bought them as part of a short game experiment to test various balls for spin on <100y shots.

I gamed it a few times and at the time, couldn't really comment on the distance, as my game was all over the place. (still is somewhat).

Recently, i have been playing some random balls, not really sure why, but i do notice i'm playing worse.

Now that i'm dialing in my drives, i think it's good to test the AVX again and see if i'm making any more distance. (more recently playing a Bridgestone e12 Soft).

Another one to watch is the Titleist Tour Soft, i prefer the feel it gives and don't notice much evidence difference between the AVX.

I've never tried a Pro V1, and don't intend to at that price bracket. AVX is slightly more affordable and the Tour soft even more.
