Courses in Knoxville TN

I've heard a rumor from multiple people that River Island is closing. I'm really hoping that is not the case. It is one of my favorite local public courses. It would be a shame to see it go. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

 

I do know it is for sale again. I know some of the original owners and the lack of potential housing around the course is a killer. I hope they arent. It is a great winter deal at $25!

Too bad about River Islands. My family had one of our most enjoyable rounds ever at this very unique course.

Three Ridges is an OK course. It has a few goofy holes that I don't care for. There are several courses within 45 minutes or so away that are alot better. In no certain order.

 

River Islands

Rarity Pointe

Avalon

Rarity Bay

Tellico Village-3 courses

 

Rarity Bay and Tellico Village may be close to an hour from Knoxville but worth it. Willow Creek is a little $$$ for me and Ruggles Ferry is pretty good but can get busy.

Played Ruggles Ferry last year, conditions were perfect, good course, good price.

Got to play River Islands a little over a month ago when I was in town for work. Was surprised to see that it was still open and definitely couldn't beat it for $25.

Played Three Ridges today. Course was in pretty good shape. They overseeded the fairways so that was a great surprise. Greens were a little bumpy from aerating but were still quick.

Three Ridges is in good shape. Fairways look dormant because of lack of rain. Crispy rough. Greens were medium speed with a stress spot here and there. Worth going to if in the area.

Yesterday I stopped by Lost Creek golf course in New Market. The gate was closed and there was a for sell by owner sign on the 9th tee. Walked up to the clubhouse and there was a note saying closing Oct 31. It was cleaned out and no carts but it looks like it's still being maintained. I have never played it but hate to see any course close.

Sold at auction a few months ago. New owner was talking about housing but now considering selling it.

It rains so much in Tenn it is hard to keep a golf course open.

This year, 100% accurate! Typically we play year round with the few days missed for rain/snow/cold but this year has been crazy!

Played Island Point (River Islands) last Friday. Place was packed and greens were perfect and fast. Senior rate was $28, regular rate was $38.

How was the overall course conditions of Island Pointe?

It was pretty good. Greens were great but heard they were areated a few weeks ago. Fairways were good. Pro shop was not well stocked but that has been common for a few years now. Pack food or cooler and you are good to go.

Thinking about joining Avalon CC. don't think its a bad deal for $150 a month. haven't played since early last year. saw they lost their greens last year. going to check it out Friday. has anyone played at Avalon recently?

I have a friend that has a home behind the 14th green. His wife played frequently this past Winter and Spring and said they had been struggling to keep grass despite obvious efforts of the grounds staff. They had been hand watering greens throughout the day and have put a lot of work into the grounds. My friends left the end of May for the Summer so I can't say how much progress has been made.

Has anyone played Patriot Hills lately? Might play there in a couple weeks.

I have not but the last couple of reviews on golfnow are very positive. I'll be in the area labor Day week and hope to get a round or two in.

Patriot Hills is always solid. Greens are always great and staff is awesome. A really great value really. Jonathan Hodge, that is on the Korn Ferry Tour, family owns it and Dandrige locally. He played high school golf with Peter Malnati on PGA tour from Jefferson City.

A group of us are flying into Knoxville at the end of the month, I had ear-marked either Egwani Farms or Island Pointe (River Islands?) as our first round, wondering if any locals have played either yet this season? Or is there another public course near the airport we should look at? Or anything east of there as we are heading towards Virginia.

Not a local, but lived there in the late 2000's. I remember Willow Creek as being pretty solid. Holston Hills is in my top 3 of all time, but it was private when I played it a handful of times.

I would suggest playing one the Sevierville courses. Egwani is ok and River Islands conditions may be questionable. I haven't played this year, so don't know current conditions

Sevierville is also on our radar since it is in the direction we are heading. Any insight on which is the preferred course there?

I've only played the River Course a few years ago and it was good. I think its the longer of the 2. Both courses are a blend of new holes and holes from the old Eagle's Landings course. The Highlands has more of the holes I didn't care for but I can't comment on how the course is.

Island Pointe should be as good as anything in Sevierville. It's only a couple of exits away from there at any rate. Depending on the time of day and year, Sevierville traffic can be really slow and frustrating as it's clogged with people heading to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. I wouldn't get in that mess unless it was absolutely necessary. 

 

Willow Creek would also be roughly on your way from the airport toward I-40E. Maybe a slight detour to the south from your route. It's a daily fee course that feels a little more like a club. Good clubhouse/pro shop/range and conditions are usually great.
