I think a good drill is to grip the club with a good neutral grip as hard as you can and then do the same thing as soft as you can. This way you have a range and you can dial in what’s comfortable until you can get the results you desire....

The waggle idea, or not starting the back swing from a dead stop, is a good one.

But you (OP) talk about swinging "at" the ball (my specialty) and you talk about tension (by which I take it you mean shoulders arms and wrists). Not necessarily the same thing. Presumably, in the former, your body stops rotating before finish and your arms take over, you can do that with no tension in your arms. In the latter you're trying to "muscle" the club, thinking you will swing faster and hit the ball farther if you do it with tense arm muscles.

For swinging "at" the ball you can definitely think about your finish; take a few practice swings where you focus on getting the club head from behind you in the backswing to in front of you in the follow through (i.e. into a good finish position, "parking the car in the garage" as Michael Breed puts it). Then step up to the ball and try to maintain that feeling. For the tension, well, that's tougher. The only way I've been able to do it is to concentrate on rotating my hips/pelvis, perhaps torso, in the downswing. If I think of swinging my arms I get too tense. But, again, that's me. The Mike Malaska L-to-L or the 9-3 drills are good to get your body in synch with your arms, and that alone can reduce tight shoulders and arms.
