A. Drive 45 minutes each way to a good course and play a foursome in 3 hours, 45 minutes, never waiting to hit a shot?

B. Drive 22.5 minutes each way to the same good course and play the same foursome in 4 hours, 30 minutes waiting to hit 10-15 shots including all the par 3s?

C. No preference because the elapsed time is the same.

Personally, I would choose A, because I'd rather spend that extra 45 minutes in the comfort of my car listening to music than waiting to hit shots. But I am interested in what the forum members think...

If I’m by myself I drive 45min-2hrs outside the city almost every round to avoid the crowds. I don’t care too much about waiting, but I hate being solo on overcrowded courses where you get sandwiched in between bigger groups with no where to go. I also hate being constantly waved through hole after hole because no matter what I feel rushed.

A for sure. For twenty-five years I was a member of a private club that took exactly 45 minutes drive time each way. We played 99% of our rounds under 4 hours. If we were among the first hour of tee times we typically played in 3:40 or so. My foursome car pooled, but after 25 years the drive got to be too much for me. I now play at a semi private club 5 minutes from my house. Last year I always had an early morning tee time and we almost always played in 3:45. This year I was assigned a "better" tee time about an hour later than last year. The problem is that the two foursomes in front of us never play in less than 4:00 and more typically around 4:10 -4:15. We wait on them on most holes. It doesn't bother the other guys, but I'd love to get a tee time in front of those guys. Alternative B (4.5 hour rounds) will never be my choice. On golf trips I try to get the earliest morning tee time possible as that usually allows for a fast round. At courses that double tee, I've been chided for making the turn too fast. Afternoon rounds at busy public and resort courses in the U.S. tend to be very slow.

There was a time in my life where I joined a club that was about 50-55 minutes from home. It was a long highway drive back and forth with little traffic. The course was a very fun Donald Ross deign, rounds never took more than 2:30 playing solo and 3:30 as a foursome as it was usually empty, and dues were very inexpensive due to being in a rural location with not much of a local economy. The negatives were that it was difficult to get friends to make the trip out to play it as guests unless I drove them, post-round alcoholic beverages were a no-go, and it was too easy to decide not to make the trip if the weather was going to be questionable. The bottom line is I'd rather be sitting in my air conditioned car listening to music instead of baking in the sun just standing there waiting on every shot. The game to me is about hitting the ball, moving to where it went, and hitting again. When I play, I want to keep a rhythm and keep moving. Not standing around and doing all of the time wasting routines and things that slow players do.

This all being said, I eventually got tired of the long drive and joined a good club closer to home. More expensive and not as good of a course, but pace of play was almost as good, still always under 4 hours for a foursome.

yup not to mention my impatience of watching people do stupid things.

Saturday we played behind a 4some and they seemed to all drive to the same spot together, they werent good enough where they were all hitting to the same spot in the middle of the fairway so it was obvious they were either watching one person hit their shot or helping a person find their ball. At one point they were all four on the edge of the woods together...sat on that tee for 10 mins probably waiting for them to try and get down the fairway. Was 2 seconds from saying screw it and sending them a warning shot.

Passed them at the turn, when they pulled up to 10 and saw us ahead of them they acted like we just decided to pass up Tiger, Rory, DJ, and Spieth and they were finishing holes in 3 mins each.

Here in CA, or AZ, TX or Maui, states where I play golf, I drive as much as hour for golf and as little as 5 mins to a course near my home. I really enjoy driving but don't equate time behind the wheel to get to a golf course with pace of play on the golf course. The longest I have driven for golf was 4hrs, play 18 and driven home same day. So it's A & B and something other. lol

For me, golf is about enjoying the sport, the outdoors with family and or friends. Playing golf in CA people must get use to 4.5-5hr rounds on weekends, tee sheets are filled. Pace is less during the week, maybe. Whining isn't going to change that for any of us.

I'd honestly quit playing golf before I'd regularly play in 4.5-5 hours. My average time over the last 10 rounds is closer to 3:15-3:30 and that's just about right. There's no scenario, whatsoever, where a 4.5-5 hour round of golf is acceptable and it sure as heck cannot be a regular occurrence. I mean, one of the clubs I belong to has a pace of play policy set to 3:40 for foursomes! It can be done and there's no reason for it ever to be 4.5-5. That's just poor management and people who accept it are as big of a problem as the people who set it up.

Also, note that I walk 95%+ of all rounds I play (yes, even in the summer in AZ) and even at that pace my heart rate rarely gets high enough to register a full day of exercise on my watch, i.e., it is slow...

Rant over but I cannot accept anyone telling people that they need to get used to a 4.5-5 hour pace. Fight against that absolute insanity.

Whether you accept it or not has no bearing on what we golfers face in SOCA on weekends, and attacking others without provocation for what we have to cope with doesn't impress me.

When I am in TX, AZ or Maui, pace of play improves, but I seldom see 3:15-3:30 rds, and I am a fast player by most standards and 99% of the time in the fairway, a jock and walk when possible. The tee sheets in those states are not full and tee time spread is greater than what's common in SOCA. Again, supply and demand. I play between 150-200 rds a year, including multiple vacations where I play almost daily. Playing the difficult Kapalua Plantation in a cart from 6800yds, I get around in about 4hrs, due to the distance between tee boxes, elevation changes and difficulty. During the week in Maui, we have played in under 4hrs, depends on course difficulty. Where you live and what you and other do may vary but it's not going influence our golf world in SOCA. Have a good day.

I live in AZ and belong to one of the toughest courses in the state. Average round is around 3:30, walking, half the time with guys who are near 70. I also belong to 3 other clubs. 2 in AZ and one in Mexico. None of them have anywhere near that pace. I have played golf in 30 different countries and only Malaysia had a regular pace like that (in Brazil they like to stop at the turn for lunch but I’ll skip counting that). I’ve played at more than 1000 different courses over the last 24 years including Kapalua several times (usually around 4:00 hours when I’ve played). The only places that we’re regularly 4+ hours were overcrowded and poorly managed and if you accept it then you are part of the problem. Period.

Oh and if you feel attacked by this... uh, ok. We may not have the same definition of an attack.

let me edit this slightly as I don’t mean to “attack” you. I realize that you can’t revolt on your own. Anyone that is subject to a 4.5+ hour round should be complaining to the course every time. People should not find it acceptable or inevitable and help each other put a stop to it. Stating that it is inevitable is a problem.

First off what you and I experience in golf is NOT what everyone should experience or even wants. Lot of people have no interest in playing golf at the pace you reference. "None" of my mid-high cap buddies are interested in sub 4hr rounds. People that play golf at your pace are a sliver segment of golfers. What happens is majority rules. Golf business in CA is conducted differently, club charters are even written differently due to density. I have family in Scottsdale and Tucson so played a lot of golf and tournaments there. NO where in AZ have I seen tee sheet pressure comparable to that of SOCA. I haven't experienced tee pressure in TX or Maui either. Due to my businesses multiple offices, like you I have traveled a great deal, been around the world nearly twice, played golf in many locals. My experiences have no bearing on SOCA conditions if conditions are not comparable.

You're right, I can't alone or even with 400 private club members change pace of play across SOCA at public tracts. The problem is with pace of play on public tracks. When green fees get well over $125ea pace of play is not so much an issue; plus at higher end courses tee groups have a greater spread and attact at different type of golfer, as well as volume.

I belive we affect change where change can be affected. In CA average age at a muni is much younger with limited golf etiquette, even manners, which affects pace of play. So when I say people need to get use to the reality, it's meant with the best of intentions and knowing conditions. Whether you agree or not doesn't change reality. I appreciate your wish but it has no influence as to what I accept or reject in golf or pace of play. If you don't like 4.5 hr round of golf don't play in SOCA, you'll be unhappy. I am not presumpuious enough to tell you or anyone else how to behave or what you should accept in life, and I expect the same level of respect. Have a great weekend of golf.

Oh and for what its worth, to mix things up, if I had to light 45 minutes of my life on fire. I'd choose B, would much rather drive less, less gas, less miles on car, and I get to be outside on a golf course, having a drink, chatting with my buddies ect. And I enjoy driving as much as the next guy who has a fun car. I also enjoy quick pace golf as much as the next. but we're talking about 45 min. Not 2 hours. the difference between 3:45 and 4.5 isn't that much in the grand scheme of things. 5-5.5, thats a problem, but 5-5.5 isn't what we're talking about in this made up scenario. Truth be told though, I wouldn't care for either option if they were my only option, but gun to my head choose one? I choose B.

I am a member of a course that has an in-town course and another course out of the city. The in-town course usually takes 4.5 hours (if not longer on a Friday) to play, but the out of town course takes 3.5 to 3 hours 45 minutes to play at most without having to wait on a shot. The in-town course is 15 minutes form my house and the out course is 40 minutes away. I ALWAYS prefer to drive the 40 minutes to lay without waiting and quicker. It actually comes out where it takes less time for me to drive, play, have a beer and then come home in less time than playing downtown.

Not yelling at you but it took like a total of less than 10 min to type out both of those replies on my phone. Slow play is the worst thing in golf and would absolutely make playing not worth it to me at a 4.5 hour+ mark. I'd rather run or ride a bike than stare at someone lining up their fourth putt or looking for a ball for the full 3 minutes. I accept 4:00 hours is somehow the standard because I know that people don't understand how to be efficient and can't be asked to think about anyone other than themselves.* That's life. I just choose not to play anywhere like that regularly.

*-Yeah, I get how this could be construed as me not thinking about anyone other than myself too but I have enough like minded playing partners that I'm ok with being in the minority instead. You honestly don't even have to try to play in less than 3:45.
