Jim Furyk is one of the most underrated players on tour. The man shot 58 & 59 in tour events. I'd say he got the most out of his unorthodox swing. He could stay on the regular tour as long as he wants. IMO of course...

Furyk should have at least two U.S. Opens to his credit, if not three. It's easy to forget he won a FedEx Cup too, but I've always loved his unorthodox swing.

If he was able to win 2 more US Opens when he was close, he would have been viewed as part of the elite.

The Monday Practice round at the 2015 Open. Out on the 13th tee watching some of the guys going through and Furyk arrives, he was playing with someone but I forget now how that was. It was really quiet out there. It was early Monday morning and we were quite far out so there was myself, another two guys and a father and son on the tee. As Furyk came over to the tee he said hello to everyone and cracked a joke. He then went over to the father and son, the son must have been about 6 and started speaking to the youngster. Asking him if he was enjoying his day, who he was looking forward to seeing, if he was beating his dad at golf yet, that kind of thing. The dad asked if he could get a picture. Furyk said sure, took the son inside the ropes and stood next to the tee next to the staff bag. Made sure that the dad got a good picture and then said to to the son to stay inside the ropes and watch them tee off. After that, Furyk gave the youngster a ball and an autograph in his programme.

 

Such a simple thing to do but to go to out of his way to make sure that father and son had a memorable moment like that, really spoke volumes to the class of the guy. He didn’t need to do it, no one would have had any issue if he had done exactly what most of the other guys did, come onto the tee, sign an autograph or two and then get the head down into their yardage book but to take a couple minutes out of his day and to go above and beyond the way that he did, really struck me. Furyk is an absolute credit to himself, to his family and to this game.

I’ve spoken of Jim Furyk stories in other threads so I will not drone on here however I will say that Mr. Palmer & Jim are THE two Classiest Tour Pros that I’ve ever spent time with.

 

That said, Mr. Palmer had an air about himself, I hate to use the word arrogant because that would be a poor word choice however I will give you a scenario and having been in this situation with both men, just say that they handled the situation very differently.

 

Both situations dealt with reservations at a restaurant and both times(different restaurants), they were running 20-30 minutes behind in seating. Mr. Palmer’s wife(his second wife, as I was told by someone that had known both Mr. Palmer and his first wife of 45+ years, Winnie, who I had met briefly though did not “know,” that she NEVER would have asked this question and in fact, when Mr. Palmer would get “edgy,” she would immediately “bring him back to reality”), Kathleen, asked him, “don’t they know who you are,” to which he responded “apparently not,” in a stoneface response. He went from talkative to almost brooding, saying nothing for the next 15 minutes or so till we were seated.

 

Similar scenario with Jim, his wife, Tabitha & Maddie, though we had waited longer than with Mr. Palmer, and we were waiting outside in 95*+ heat, 100% humidity and I was the one gettin pissed and Jim was the one who tried to calm me to lighten the mood, lolol. Also, some of the wives that I’ve been around were much higher maintenance than their Tour Boy hubbies, and you would think that THEY were the world class Player. Not Tabitha! She’s a sweetheart, very natural and down to earth, and also very witty and outgoing.

 

Put it this way~

 

If you asked me what Pro, of ANY, living or deceased, that I would like to go on a two week golf trip to Ireland/Scotland with, and this includes Sam & Pete, Pete would be my choice, every day all day 7/365.

 

That being said, my next choice would be Jim Furyk, hands down, no question.

 

He’s witty and funny as h*ll, no-maintenance, easy to be around off the course and not talkin golf, which we practically never talked about and though he’s a HoFer, he doesn’t take himself too seriously, and he has a lot outside interests, follows a lot of sports, plus he loves the Stillers??.

 

Versus Sam, who was great and while I loved Pete like a father, my feelings obviously didn’t rise to that level with Sam, though I spent a lot of time around him and while we had some great times together, he always put that “good ole boy” personality forward for the public, and while he was a good man, please don’t take this the wrong way, however he could be high maintenance, extremely high maintenance, even for his older Bro, Pete.

Matty’s story about Jim is all that I would EVER expect to hear. I was paired with Jim in a Pittsburgh charity event when he had shot a 76 at Oakmont(I had a 78 and I Played pretty d*mn well cept for three 3-putts, all from inside 25’ ??) blew two tee balls OB and buried one in a green side trap with a 56* wedge and he was in front of me leaving the 18th and there was a group of younger kids, 10-14yo, standing above and behind the green in front of where we had to go to sign cards, and he stopped, asked his caddie to wait a minute, bent over, unzipped his bag and took four gloves out, along with two sleeves of balls and he signed every glove and ball, along with his visor that he wore that day. They circled him like the pied piper, he asked them their favorite club/shot, what they shot, and was wonderful and he signed for every kid. This was after Playing like sh*t, and I’ve Played with/been with other Pros who hit the ball and scored much better than Jim that day, and they pushed away lil 12-14yo hands and hats.

 

That 78 was as far out of Jim’s mind as could possibly be, and he was in the present for those lil kids!!!

 

As I said, NO MAINTENANCE!!

 

Jim is a Gem???

Good guy, but I would walk away if forced to play with him, he is so slow, what you see on tv does not due justice to how truly slow he is. Sorry Jim part of being a good sport is not being slow. I know he plays slower with money on the line. Hopefully he plays much faster when cash is not on the line.

Yah, he was/is an excellent athlete, though he doesn’t look it, lol. Jim can also hoop a lil. We were over at the club and heading down to hit some balls on the line pre-round and I was in the locker changing and Jim was waiting outside by the path that leads downhill to our practice area and to the right was an asphalt area that lead from the clubhouse to the lower Mens’ parking lot. This area was also where the caddies waited to be called and there were benches and a basketball? hoop up on the clubhouse wall.

 

I walked through the shop and the locker storage area out the back door to the practice area and who do I see with his visor turned around backwards but Jimbo, Playin PIG with the caddies??

 

I was down on the line probably 10-15 minutes when Jim came down, and he had lost a game for $5 and the kid had him sign the five dollar bill?, so Jim gave him another five to spend, haha

 

I mean, who the h*ll even thinks of that???

 

Sam would’ve broken the five, kept $4, signed a single, given it to the kid and told him that golf’s how he made his living??
