Lengthen Iron shafts

I'm not a builder or fitter etc, but I do get enjoyment from fitting my own grips.

I've just bought a secondhand set of irons that have fitted Kuro Kage 60gr graphite but they are about 1" shorter than my current gamers

 

Is it easy to lengthen the shafts? Seems you buy plastic inserts into the butt end, glue then regrip.

Will it change the swing weight? Will it alter flex? How do I know what size extender to buy?

Any advice gratefully accepted.

Yes, plastic shaft extensions.

Yes, swingweight will increase due to the longer length. With 60 gram shafts a high swingweight won't likely matter because the shafts are so light.

If you measure the shaft ID using calipers you can then purchase inserts of the exact correct size. Harbor Freight sells cheap calipers if you don't have any. Or, buy some fat extenders and sand them to fit. This is what I do. Make a sanding board with 100 grit sandpaper and sand to fit. One other option is buying the expanding type inserts. I personally don't favor those, particularly with a 1" extension, but it is an option.

Can I get the internal diameter (I assume that's ID you talk of) from Kuro kage spec sheet?

 

Also, what glue is best? I'm assuming superglue is no good.

You can check the spec sheet for ID, but it's most likely not there. ID is not a measurement you can usually find without doing it yourself with graphite.

While you should never use superglue for attaching heads and shafts, there really isn't a reason you can't use it or any strong glue for this. Of course golf type epoxy would be the preferred method, but a one inch extension should hold ok with most high strength glues assuming you have a snug fit to start with.

The main problem with super glue in golf is that despite it's strength, it has very poor impact resistance. That means it can handle smooth steady forces much better than it can handle impulse forces. I'm guessing due to the fact that it's very brittle. So I'd stick to using epoxy.

I extended two sets this spring using those color coded ones. The previous tips you received are helpful. I had one of the measurement extensions, but I think the calipers to measure in ID works better.

I used the extension-specific epoxy but I think regular golf epoxy would be fine. I did sand up the extension a bit before applying the epoxy. When I dried them, I stood them upside down to prevent any excess down the shaft. I also made sure to check no residue snapped off that would cause a rattle after gripping.
