Trackman Distance / SS vs the Course Distance

JB_007

Recommended Posts

I recently had a lesson on Trackman and during the lesson, even when warming up, I noticed a lot of my distances were about 10-15 yards further than when I'm on the course. The irons are where I see the biggest fall off, as my driver / 3w were close to what I was seeing on the Trackman.

Example, 7 iron (34deg) 162avg on trackman, shotscope has playing avg at 148, which I would say is pretty accurate. My swing speed with my 7 iron was right around 92mph.

I verified the machine didn't have any boosts/ wind adjustments, but I'm curious, how can I take the swing from the trackman ( outdoor range) to the course? Is hitting off the mat really making that large of a distance? I've done the foot spary and I don't generally miss too much from left to right on club face, more middle to toward heel.

@SNIPERBBB Yes, I was using a prov1 for both on course and trackman@leekgolf The first session was off a mat, the second was at the range off grass. There was 2-3yard difference between these two numbers but still roughly 10yards farther than on course. My angle of AoA avg was -3.2. I'm currently a 7.5 handicap, I would say behind my short game, my irons are a stronger suit ( other than distance). I would say I hit the majority of my irons solid / clean, with my big miss being a toe ball, which happens may 1 or 2x a round. Majority of my strikes are in the middle or more toward the shaft, with the variance being if I hit it thin or higher on the face.

Make sure your ball setting is on the correct ball setting for the ball you're using, as well as the elevation that the trackman can be set at. If someone messed around and put it at 5,000 ft and you're used to playing at 200 ft there could be a big difference there. I do a lot of stuff on trackman and if you're swinging your 7 iron at 92 mph and hitting it 148 yd there could be some issues there as well. On tour the average 7 iron is about 90 miles an hour and it should result in about 175 yards. Maybe it's not the yardages that are off it's the club head speed.

@SNIPERBBB yes, I'm looking at the carry yardage. Yesterday as a test, an a par 3 playing 163, playing 160 (precision pro rangefinder) I hit a 7 iron, which I hit, pretty well, a little to the right of middle, maybe a grove or two up, it carried 149. The ball stopped almost immediately, and I shot back to the tee box for reference.
@jakenlson0311 I thought of this too, I had the instructor check the trackman to verify that nothing was changed.

Door three..when you were at the lesson were there yardage markers you can laser?

Door four is maybe you're not hitting as well on the course

92 mph 7 iron should be going much farther than 149. Should be close to 180. You must not be hitting it well at all to be totally honest.

The balls they use at most Trackman facilities tend to hit longer with shorter irons, and a little shorter with drivers and woods.

6i and 7i should be pretty spot on? That’s been what I’ve been told over the years I’ve been using Trackman. Further, if the technician is any good, the machine would be corrected for any swing speed and club.

Another poster mentioned that a 92mph 7i should be getting a lot more distance? That seems right? My carry is roughly around 170 with 5500-7000rpm spin, but I’m not a great ball striker.

@ryan84 I agree, it should be going further than the 149 I'm seeing as my playing distance.

I guess my next option is to get some face tape and just verify my strike again.. I've done this in the past and typically had a bunching around the middle / hosel side. The only other thing I can assume is maybe I'm subconsciously slowing my swing down when I'm playing vs swinging harder when I'm hitting at the range / on the TM.

Lots of things. I'm assuming you weren't hitting into a net, but IIRC Trackman can be calibrated for hitting into a net despite using it outside and it can throw distances off. I did that unknowingly a few years ago although it had the opposite effect...it was reading distances wayyy shorter than actual.

I've worked with Tour pro clients on bringing Trackman out on the course and generally they see the same thing. One of the issues that doesn't get taken into account for is that the target is not as defined on the range and the pressure isn't as 'on' when using the driving range so you don't get that governor in your brain like you can on the course. Also, many people look at just their max distances and don't account for their average distances.

Normally with the driver, the Tour pros will report club speeds on the range at about 5 mph faster than when they step up into competition. I've only had one client ever that recorded higher speeds consistently in competition than on the range.

Just a guess, but I have a couple of Flightscope LMs, an XI and and X2. Both work similarly to a Trackman. What iron were you hitting with a -3.x AoA? If it was a 7 iron

, I can understand it. That's pretty shallow and a mat would allow for much cleaner contact and a longer carry.

Still something iffy if he's swinging 92mph with a 7i and getting /profile/209355-RichieHunt/?do=hovercard" data-mentionid="209355" href="https://forums.golfwrx.com/profile/209355-RichieHunt/" rel="">@RichieHunt on this one. On the course there are consequences and steering/compensations come into play vs swinging freely with no target at the range. When I am working on the monitor I can typically add a full club length but I don't try those feels/swings on the course.

Agree, it’s similar to driving range numbers. You’re warmed up and can really go after the ball, but on the course you really want control on all shots.

I am a firm believer of getting a “workout” on the range as long as I’m not actively working on my swing. It’s one way to get faster.

On the course or on a launch monitor, I tend to back off to something that feels like 80% just to get more consistency even though my actual swing speed is likely closer to “all out”.

Something is off, I can carry a 7 about 180, and my speed is 92mph

Yeah I agree with this. Theres a subconscious handbrake that gets pulle up ont he golf course. When theres water right and a hedge left and water short you don't feel as free to swing as fast..

I've noticed the same issues too with Trackman and my iron distances being much longer than reality but also my driver carries being pretty accurate..

You are swinging differently on the range vs. the course. Most people do! Hitting the same club repeatedly without pressure lets you start grooving a much more consistent swing than you actually have. Mats also make a huge difference (15-20yds farther with 7iron for me as the ball launches higher with less spin).

Next time you are on Trackman at the range make sure you hit off grass and simulate the course by switching between driver, irons, and wedges every shot. It will take some time to switch the clubs each time in the Trackman app but it simulates the wait time between shots on the course and will give you a much more accurate representation of your swing and yardages.

I had to look mine up. I play Cobra one length irons and my 7 iron is 30 degrees. (PW 45).

My swing speed is usually pretty easy to remember with SL irons as its always 89-92 MPH with each iron on a full swing. Even at 34 or 35 degrees for your 7 iron and swing speed it just isnt adding up for me.
