I took the plunge based on this thread and purchased a PlaneMate. I haven't been able to see my pro since COVID started and after watching the videos on this determined that it's basically trying to teach what my pro has been trying to get me to do for the better part of two years now.

I only worked through the first day protocol today and will unlikely go past the second until next week because I'm playing in a three day tournament this weekend and don't want to go to crazytown until it's over. My instant impression is positive - it feels like what my pro wants me to do when I'm able to execute it correctly. I was skeptical about adding a ball to the mix but I did just fine.

It's amazing to me how a simple device like this can make you want to make movements that even someone pressing on your body to get you to move can't do. I also experienced the ghost hands many have talked about and found that to be a particularly interesting phenomena. I can also see why a previous poster said he didn't want to play like that so he would wait until it goes away. Ghost hands almost seem to exaggerate the move more than the band to me if that make sense.

I'm on page 22 of 62 and could not take it anymore so I bought one. They claim it could be delivered up to 7/25 but warned it could be longer because of Covid. Could anyone who received their's recently give me an idea of how long you waited?

This thread sold me too, I did the same thing a few weeks back after 20ish pages.

I ordered mine on 6/29 and just received it today, 7/10. My estimated date was 7/15. I also registered my planemate before I received it. So if you want, you can get access to the Advanced protocol and other protocol series and watch them all to get a feel for everything. I'd recommend it.

Lot of rain in NJ today but can't wait to get out there. I started with the follow through motion in the Day 1 protocol and it already feels great.

I have, Nrutledge. I’ve owned one for a couple of months also. Most of my work with it has been during my spare time in my office without a ball. Admittedly, my ball striking has improved tremendously, but the dozen or so range sessions I’ve had with the PM have produced 90% thin shanks. I’ll take it off and stripe the ball over and over. Put it on...thin shanks. Can anyone offer a suggestion?

You do not need to be registered to watch the initial 7-day protocols. I cannot post links but go to the Tour Striker page and click on PlaneMate to see the protocols.

I just got done revisiting the day 1 protocol and adding in the day 2 protocol. I feel like I've learned a lot from this device in the short time that I've had it. YMMV but as I mentioned in my earlier post, I think this is really in line with what my pro has been working with me on for the better part of two years. Since I can do this at home, it's probably got more staying power if I stick with it.

I really feel the burn in my lead hip when I do the semi-finish drill 30x. I also really, really feel the burn when I make the one handed finish move with my lead arm. I had to alternate between my lead and trail arm to give it a break to get to 30 reps a piece. I thought hitting balls one handed was a really good exercise as well and I think I'm going to make that a focus of my practice moving forward. I've discovered my lead wrist and arm are weak. I was able to "collect" the golf ball one handed pretty well and really surprised myself using both my lead and trail arm.

I can see why people who don't work through the protocols as designed may struggle. Even in the beginning I'm feeling new moves/positions that I have been working hard to accomplish in my ordinary practice but have had a really difficult time getting to consistently. I really hope continuing to work through the protocols will net some positive results for me.

I watched the day 3 protocol yesterday and gave the relax move a couple of shots. Last week was my league night so I didn't want to really put in a whole session on it and just did abbreviated versions of the day 1 and day 2 protocols to warm up before I played.

I never hit the ball longer. I ended up in spots that I've never been to before on the course. Today I feel a little sore and I'm thinking it's because I used muscles I haven't used to swing a golf club before. I'm definitely excited about where I'm headed with the PlaneMate. I'm going to keep going at it slowly.

like many others, I bought the planemate after reading this thread. I really like the progress I’ve made in the first week, but my issue is the “layoff” or “relax” at the top. Anytime I do that, or think about it, I shank it...like 75% of the time. I’ve only shanked a few shots in my lifetime so this is very unnerving. Anyone else experience this and get by it to where you stopped shaking all together. Man I hate even typing that word...

In my experience if the hips haven't pivoted correctly in the backswing then you will have no room to swing down. The arms and club will get blocked out by the hips and you will force the club away from you to get to the ball. The hosel moves to where the sweetspot of the club should be. Getting proper extension of the trail leg in the backswing gives me room to shallow the club and swing down so the sweet spot is oriented with the ball. That's what has worked for me. If I get lazy with my pivot (legs) than I can hit a shank.

I believe there is a video of him demo’ing it somewhere. I’m sure others could confirm.

I have been told I have a Gankas like swing. Makes sense since I have seen one of his satellite instructors in Las Vegas, Jake Gilmer.

I have used the Planemate when were in the most strict lockdown and it has helped me really get the feel of laying down the shaft.

You mean a Matthew Wolff Gankas swing or another kind of swing? The plane mate puts you in a great back swing position and then teaches you to shallow the shaft mainly as an arms feeling. The lower body workings that are taught by Martin Chuck are less pronounced than what is taught by GG. Is that what you mean?

I was a member of GG's original website for about a year. I believe the planemate and GG both teach a shallow rotation driven swing but use different feels to get there. For instance, I don't thing about turning my lead knee around or using GG's leg work to get shallow. The relaxing of the band is a better feel for me. I do feel myself squatting in transition but it is a result of my backswing and the relaxation movement. Working through the Gankas site has made using the planemate very easy for me because the positions are very familiar. There was a Gankas drill where you would take an open water bottle halfway back and then turn it sideways so the water would spill behind you. That is the same move as relaxing the band with the planemate. What I love about the planemate is that it keeps me on track and provides immediate feedback for how steep the club should be at the top. When I was doing the GG stuff I would strike it well for a while and then lose it out of nowhere. I suspect I was getting too dumped under without rotation. I'd start hitting nasty snap hooks that would work its way down the bag.

Played yesterday and felt like I was in complete control of my ball. I was even confident enough to work the ball around a few doglegs and around a few trees. I'd say I only hit 3 shots that were absolutely dreadful and that was from a lack of execution. Had I made any putt of significance it would have been a really good round. My putting is horrendous at the moment. I missed at least five 4-6 footers for par that were very makeable. I'm excited about my game and my pitching and chipping are finally coming around so I suspect the handicap will come down this year.

Awesome feedback!

I still have trouble using my hands/wrists....so when I use the GG transition it seems to work better & more consistent. Personally I feel they work together, but using the lower body more with GG so I get more distance & accuracy.

When it comes to chipping/pitching - its simple TS. Bring it up, cock it and turn....works beautifully.

If your short game is getting better, handicap will drop quickly. I was hovering around 18.5 for a few months.....since using the TS & now GG with it, I am down to a 14. Not great, but progress. All comes down to if I can get off the tee. if so, its a low score. Still haven't shot int he 70's yet, but did post 80, 81 & 81 in the last 3 weeks.

I think GG even says that some guys will have different feels. Some will use the legs, others may feel the arms stay up at the top or widen. There was a drill I used to do where you put a shaft in the ground and angle it so it rests inside of the trail knee. Prevents you from going internal too soon in the downswing and encourages the lead leg opening up. I never had difficulty doing it so I think early internal rotation was never a problem for me. Before I got my planemate I was experimenting with the widening of the hands in transition. I think this is a huge power move because all of a sudden my lob wedge was flying 10 yards further. For now I'm sticking with the feels the PM is teaching. I may implement it further down the road.

  • 4 weeks later...

It works. I just did protocol 1 last night, and I can already feel a significant difference. My takeaway was not good, even though I thought I was going straight back. I experienced the little pains from using different sets of muscles, also found out that my hips do not rotate enough. Got the "ghost hands" too.

I have been trying to "clear the body for the arms" for months, after getting takeaway set and moving my hips more, it happens naturally, it seems.

Can't wait to hit balls now!
